They’re really beautiful posters. The hazy, dreamlike quality of the shots is great and they seem pretty sombre, which seems to be the prevailing mood of the thing given the trailer. Hopefully the movie lives up to the book, a real literary gem and a best-seller on top of that.

Carey Mulligan follows up on her critically acclaimed performance in An Education with this movie, she plays Kathy H, a student from an isolated boarding school known as Hailsham, and as she and her friends Ruth (Keira Knightley) and Tommy (Andrew Garfield) venture out into the world for the first time they learn more about themselves and why their lives have been the way that they have.

What do you think of the posters? Intrigued? Unimpressed?

The Going the Distance soundtrack. Let’s say you were going to make a movie, with your ultimate aspiration being that you would get super-rich and start getting invites to the kind of parties where they serve sushi off the toned derrieres of underwear models and dwarves scurry round with complimentary bowls of cocaine strapped to their skulls. Now, to facilitate the opening of the door onto this world of Olympian decadence, from what type of film would you choose to make? Science fiction blockbuster? Action extravaganza? Humble rom com?

Hey, don’t roll your eyes at the latter suggestion. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again till I’m blue in the face; while romantic comedies might not generate the supernovas of buzz that the perceived big boys do, they offer the genuine advantages of relatively low production costs and big fat profit margins, meaning that when something like The Proposal hits, it hits big. Chemistry of the leads is, of course, perceived as the critical factor as to whether a rom com comes up gangbusters at the box office, and in this area Going the Distance is able to call on the charms of Justin Long and Drew Barrymore. Those two are a couple in actuality too, and they and their new movie’s backers at Warners will no doubt be hoping that the attempt to transfer this genuine chemistry to the big screen comes out more Bogie and Bacall than Bennifer.

The story treatment for the Justin ‘n’ Drew characters is that they are endeavouring to make their relationship work over a long distance, though hopefully Long’s Garrett and Barrymore’s Erin are not the stereotypical participants in an LDR that you meet in the real world – those masochists always seeming to revel in the gloom of their spells apart, moping around as if their love affair is somehow more pure, true and infinitely holy than those of everyone else who wasn’t so effing stupid as to go out with someone who lives more than a ten-minute bus ride away. The tunes on the soundtrack to Going the Distance seem to have been selected in a bid to capture the ecstasy/despair dichotomy at the heart of the long-distance relationship, with most exhibiting some kind of bittersweet quality; a vulnerable sense of fun. Plus you can imagine most of it playing over montages of Drew rushing to meet Justin or Justin rushing to meet Drew.

And while things don’t begin in particularly auspicious manner, with neither of the Generationals’ piano-led Either Way or Georgie James’ Places doing anything to distinguish themselves from your average slices of radio-friendly pop-rock, things pick up after that; Albert Hammond, Jr.’s In Transit sounding pleasingly, and utterly unsurprisingly, like the Strokes, all chiming guitar lines teased from the upper end of the fretboard. The Cure’s Just Like Heaven is duly called into the fray, and although Could We is perhaps not the mightiest of Cat Power cuts, her voice is such a perennial wellspring of magic as to ensure repeat plays. Once past the soundtrack midpoint, jaunt is increasingly subsumed by tuneful melancholy; however a pair of sucker punches remain, in the twin shapes of Eels’ growling Prizefighter and an insistent Passion Pit remix.

The rumour referred to above is that Brad Pitt is “favourite” to play the lead role in an adaptation of the Western video game Red Dead Redemption. According to Showbizspy:

Sources say the Hollywood heartthrob is the hot favorite to play renegade outlaw John Marston in an epic cowboy shoot-em-up based on the PlayStation game.

“This is an exciting project with a great character at the center of it,” a source said.

“The idea is to make this in the style of an epic Western movie but with a few modern touches.

“Brad is perfect for the role and he is being given first refusal.”

The more Westerns, the better I say. One of them has to be good. Same thing with video game movies. Except for, you know, there have actually been good Westerns. So will a Red Dead Redemption movie live up to the legacy of great Westerns or fall foul of the video game movie curse? Only time will tell.

If you haven’t played the game (like me) and probably won’t get around to it, or if you enjoyed the game and just can’t get enough of it there’s a cool little movie below based on the game from John Hillcoat, the director of The Road and The Proposition:

What do you think, is Brad Pitt a good fit for the part? Who would be just as good or better?

Wow, what a story. Just fifteen years ago, Pixar was an animation studio making a CGI film about some kid’s toys coming to life. Now they’re a film studio that made the first billion-dollar animated film in history and it’s still all about some kid’s toys coming to life. There’s a moral in here somewhere.

According to the press release from Disney, Pixar’s utterly flawless Toy Story 3 became the seventh member to wear the exclusive smoking jacket of the billionaire’s club, alongside Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest, Titanic and Avatar.

You want a list of the latest records this film has smashed? Okay:

- Highest grossing animated film of all time (beating Shrek 2: Shrek Harder)
- Highest grossing Pixar film so far (beating Finding Nemo)
- Disney’s biggest ever international gross ($529.9 million worldwide)
- Highest grossing Latin America release ever ($138 million)
- Most successful Disney release in the UK ever ($102.4 million)
- Fourth biggest film in the UK ever
- Five straight weeks at the top of the Japanese box office ($111.2 million)
- Seventh highest-grossing film of all time (ignoring inflation)
- Ninth highest-grossing film in the US to date ($404.6 million)

And that’s not all. With the (completely undeserved) success of Tim Burton’s Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland A Tim Burton Film By Tim Burton earlier on in the year, Disney have become the first film studio in history to release two billion-dollar films in a single year. Wonderland (By Tim Burton) set the records for biggest 3D opening weekend, biggest non-sequel Disney opening (it kind of is a sequel, though) biggest Disney international release of all time ($690 million), fourth biggest international film and is the fifth highest-grossing film of all time. Golly.

The star of The Hurt Locker has been named as a cast member for the forthcoming Mission Impossible sequel. Helmed by Pixar’s Brad Bird and produced by MI:3 director JJ Abrams, Mission Impossible 4 is rumoured to feature an IMF agent groomed to eventually replace the Ethan Hunt character as the central character of the franchise.

The last time they tried to replace the central character of a favourite spy franchise of mine, it was a very bad idea, but in this case it should work. Hunt isn’t intrinsic to the concept of Mission Impossible, and could easily become a Phelps-like character for future films. Renner is considerably older than one might have expected if he is indeed being groomed to replace Cruise, though, which might indicate that the rumours of Cruise’s replacement are greatly exaggerated. That or the character is not who we presume him to be.

What do you think about the addition of Renner to MI:4, and what kind of role would you like to see him in?

Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell are set to appear in the next installment of the Scream series, ‘Scream 4′. Details at the moment are sketchy but it seems as though their roles will be cameos rather than central. This indicates that one or both of them may get the honour of being slashed in the opening scene, just as Drew Barrymore was all the way back 1996.

Bell and Paquin are two more additions to an already extensive cast list which as well as including old favourites Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox Arquette and David Arquette as the mopey heroine Sidney Prescott, ruthless reporter Gail Weathers and spazzy policeman Dewey Riley respectively, also includes a whole load of new faces. Amongst those new faces are Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Marielle Jaffe, Rory Culkin, Nico Tortorella, Erik Knudsen, Anthony Anderson, Adam Brody, Marley Shelton, Alison Brie and Mary McDonnell, many whom I expect will find a home on the end of ghostface’s blade.

And, just in case you didn’t know, Wes Craven will direct again so it’s in safe hands. Saying that, he did also direct ‘Vampire in Brooklyn’ so maybe his hands aren’t that safe after all…

One of the most frequent questions posed by movie fans everywhere at the moment is, who the hell is going to direct ‘The Hobbit’ and when the heck are we going to find out who the hell is going to direct ‘The Hobbit’? Well the news is in and it turns that, according to Peter Jackson, we will find out “sometime soon”.

In an interview in The Dominion Post, Jackson says he is confident that there will soon be certainty about whether it will be him or someone else who will direct the film. He also said that he plans to map out a five year plan regarding his future projects “that will keep many people very busy”. Part of that plan may be a film about the battle of Gallipoli which Jackson suggests he would like to do.

The reason why ‘The Hobbit’ has been in limbo for so long is due to problems between Warner Bros and MGM, who are in major debt. Jackson says that Warner Bros are “making progress untangling the MGM situation, so we should have certainty with The Hobbit sometime soon”.

Obviously Jackson is suited to directing ‘The Hobbit’ but I still think Guillermo Del Toro leaving was a big blow to the project. His brilliant creative mind seemed perfect for Tolkien’s Middle Earth and I would have loved to have seen how he would have interpreted it. But alas, it wasn’t to be. He left due to the constant holdups and concerns that it would prevent him from being able to get on with other projects. Let’s face it, the longer this drags on, the less interesting it becomes. I’m still adamant that there is no need for it to be split in to two parts, as has been suggested it will be. It is a story that could easily fit into a 2 hour film. But that plan may change anyway.

You’ll be seeing a new, live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film in 2012, and it’s written by the guys who penned the first Iron Man film. Yes, live action. You are not having a bizarre hallucinogenic dream.

Apparently Viacom’s Nickelodeon bought the global rights to the entire Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle franchise, including all films, TV shows and games, for a crispy $60 million from, um, Viacom’s Paramount Pictures. It’s all a bit incestuous.

The producing team of – deep breath – Platinum Dunes’ Michael Bay, Andrew Form, Brad Fuller and original producers Scott Mednick, Galen Walker and Maria Norman are seeing the movie fast-tracked (i.e. rushed beyond all reason) and want a first draft of the script by October so they can attach a director and go into production asap. In order to accomplish this, they’ve turned to Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, writers of Iron Man, a new, unproduced Punisher, a new Highlander and the future Buck Rogers movies. Put like this, maybe they are a good choice to handle a nerdy franchise such as this. Still, rushing films never ends well.

The Piranha 3D soundtrack. Fish! Terrifying, aren’t they? Whadda you mean no? We’re not talking about a breadcrumb-coated bit of cod here – these are piranhas! The aquatic menace of choice for Bond villains seeking fishy means with which to punish those underlings unfortunate enough to have incurred their wrath.

Picking the songs for Piranha 3D was a task of balancing context against quality. After all, the human characters in Alexander Aja’s remake of the Corman-produced ’70s schlocker are a mix of spring breakers and porno performers, showcasing their well-honed bods and empty heads out on the beach. Given that then, how in the name of Captain Birdseye can the Piranha people possibly unearth music that will offer a decent listen and yet still correspond to a group of vacuous narcissists so objectionable that the movie in which they exist is asking its audience to take immense pleasure from the sight of them being ripped into hundreds of chunks of bleeding flesh by a ravenous school of stereoscopic killer fish?

Not an easy conundrum to resolve satisfactorily, you would think, and indeed a listen to the Piranha 3D soundtrack confirms precisely that. A lot of it is the kind of stuff that you might expect to hear emanating at too loud a volume from too far wound-down a car window, often replete with a thick ’80s sheen to make it sound more contemporaneously exciting than it actually is (and yes, I’m aware how idiotic it is to cite an ”80s sheen’ as evidence of the contemporary in 2010, but don’t blame me, blame the music industry). Get U Home by Californian rapper Shwayze or Amanda Blank’s Make It Take It fall into this trap, and even old stagers are not immune from the production gloss plague. Public Enemy’s Bring the Noise is essentially bulletproof, yet the toxic remix from Benny Benassi contrives to make you think your stereo is going on the blink when you listen to it.

Superior perhaps are Dub Pistols’ blend of rap and languid sunny brass on She Moves, and the Louie Louie-ish Nadas Por Free from Ozomatli – both of which would probably sound like the greatest thing in the universe if you heard them at a music festival when you had availed yourself of an excess of beer and sunshine at too early a juncture in the day. You could be forgiven for mistaking Adriana Kohtova and Denisa Slepkovska for a Wimbledon ladies quarterfinal match-up but they get to incongruously chime in with a spot of opera, while ‘Paperboy’ Reed aims for a euphoric soulfulness in pleasant enough fashion, without ever quite answering the question of why you would listen to him over going back to the source and digging out some Smokey or Marvin Gaye instead.

Which leaves us with a final three tracks of harder, more aggressive sound than what has gone before. Now You See It features some fascinating sociological musings on posteriors in motion and how many women the main vocalist gets to party with. Doth the gentleman protest too much? And by the time Steve Aoki and [[[Zuper Blahq]]] are In the House, it’s probably high time everyone of taste and/or sanity was leaving.

Five new faces crash into the US box office this week… and Stallone’s muscle-tastic The Expendables remains the winner. The ensemble action flick grossed a mildly explosive $16.5 million in its second week and has nearly made back its $80 million budget in the US alone. Expect to see more manly action throwbacks on the horizon soon.

Proving that there is no God, the new ‘comedy’ from the ‘team’ behind Meet The Spartans, Vampires Suck (geddit, it’s based on Twilight, yeah?) opened up in second place with a wallet-sucking $12.2 million. It’s good to note that this is the second time in a row a film from the ‘talented’ people behind Epic Movie, Date Movie and Disaster Movie has failed to open in number one …but it’s still surely a sign of the end of times.

Vampires Suck (HAHAHAHA, yeah?) knocked the girlsome Eat, Pray, Love down to third place with $12m. Second new release, urban comedy Lottery Ticket, opened to the tune of $11m in fourth place, pushing down Will Ferrell/ Mark Wahlberg buddy-cop flick The Other Guys into fifth place with $10.1m.

Piranha 3D chewed and boob-flashed its way into sixth place with a paltry $10m. This is somewhat a surprise to any fan of gore/ naked female torsos, especially considering that there are boobs being shown in 3D. Top that, Avatar.

The final new starters, Nanny McPhee Returns and Jennifer Aniston sperm donor comedy The Switch opened in seventh and eighth respectively. McPhee whisked off $8.3m while The Switch jerked out $8.1 million.

This knocked down Inception from fourth to ninth with $7.6m. Christopher Nolan’s latest has grossed over $100m more than it cost to make, meaning that the next Batman film could consist entirely of close-up shots of Nolan’s genitals and it would still get greenlit.

Sadly, the much-anticipated Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has been cast down to tenth place with a pants second week taking of $5m. Is this the end for our hero? In all likelyhood, yes.

US Box Office Results – August 20-22, 2010
1. The Expendables – $16.5m / $64.8m total
2. Vampires Suck (lol, yeah?) – $12.2m / $18.8m total
3. Eat, Pray, Love – $12m / $47m total
4. Lottery Ticket – $11.1m
5. The Other Guys -$10.1m / $88.1m
6. Piranha 3D – $10m
7. Nanny McPhee Returns – $8.3m
8. The Switch – $8.1m
9. Inception – $7.6m / $261m
10. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World – $5m / $20m
