Voting has opened on the first trailer for the new Will Ferrell and Zach ‘The Hangover’ Galifianakis comedy The Campaign.

The story follows North Carolina politician Cam Brady (Ferrell), who has run for governor five years unopposed. That is until Marty Huggins (Galifianakis) shows up:

Yeah, Will Ferrell just punched a baby.

Ferrell and Galifianakis aside, it boasts a pretty impressive-looking supporting cast: Jason Sudeikis, John Lithgow, Dan Aykroyd and Brian Cox. Directing The Campaign is Jay Roach (Meet The Parents, Austin Powers), whose last movie was the very mediocre Dinner For Schmucks.

The Campaign looks to have about as much comic potential as you could expect from a Will Ferrell vehicle, with Cam Brady having some shades of Ron Burgundy about him, and Zach Galifianakis looking on good form as his utterly clueless opponent. But Zach going beardless seems so wrong!

The Campaign is due for release on August 10th in the US, and September 28th in the UK.

Reheated Untouchables or the next L.A. Confidential? That’s the question hovering over Gangster Squad, the new movie backed by the original home of the gangland thriller, Warner Bros., and directed by Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer. The new trailer suggests the latter, with its stylish, all-star, no expenses-spared action elevating anticipation levels as high as a kite on a windy day.

Gangster Squad is based on a true-life tale of 1940s crime war, and stars Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen, an East Coast kingpin now causing bedlam out in Los Angeles. Ranged against him is an elite unit of fedora-sporting, gun-toting hard-nuts, including Josh Brolin’s O’Mara, Ryan Gosling’s Wooters, and Giovanni Ribisi’s tiny li’l moustache.

The trailer is slick, to say the least, with it being a pleasure to see Penn cast as the heel, and Nick Nolte rasping like a chain-smoking rhino who’s swallowed a hornet’s nest. Check it out for yourself below, and you can see Gangster Squad in your local fleapit from 12 October in the US, and 9 November in the UK.

Kick-Ass 2 Is Coming… Minus Matthew Vaughn

Kick-Ass divided opinion on its release in spring 2010. The always-vocal web-based faithful said a lot of complimentary things about it. The multiplex-going masses shrugged, and largely ignored it. But nonetheless, a tidy profit was made off a relatively modest expenditure, meaning talk of a sequel has never quite completely shut up and naffed off. Latest rumour is that this follow-up will indeed start shooting soon, albeit minus the director of film one, Matthew Vaughn.

Though Lionsgate put out the first Kick-Ass, screen rights to the series (based on the Marvel strip by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.) remained with Vaughn. If a sequel was to emerge, then he had been fully expected to wield the golden megaphone of power once more.

However his career behind the camera has since moved onwards and upwards, shifting into the blockbuster big leagues with X-Men: First Class – and he is now very much bogged down with the next installment in that more traditional superhero franchise.

Which meant that if Kick-Ass 2 was to get off the ground, then a new director was required. And lo and behold, that’s only what’s gone and happened, with Jeff Wadlow, the man behind slasher movie Cry Wolf (it says here…), being sized up for the task. Wadlow has apparently already doodled up a script, and Universal is reputedly ready to lend its substantial backing to the project, in the hope that shooting can begin as early as August this year.

Any potential flies in the ointment? Only that if this new Kick-Ass isn’t to crash as spectacularly as the wannabe Condorman from the first movie then the fresh-faced stars of that film – Aaron Johnson,Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse – need to be convinced to reprise their roles as Kick-Ass, Hit-Girl and Red Mist respectively. Better get the chequebook…

The Avengers has already grossed just shy of three-quarters of a billion dollars worldwide, while reviews have been great too, as has the response from movie-goers – which should ensure that the movie’s writer-director Joss Whedon is feeling very pleased with himself. And he is. But not so pleased that he hasn’t found time to post a blog thanking his loyal fanbase for their unstinting support.

Whedon was hardly an unknown before getting the call to helm The Avengers, he having made a name as a screenwriting wunderkind on the likes of Speed and Toy Story in the ’90s, before subsequently becoming a TV big shot with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Dollhouse, not to mention cult favourite Firefly.

But the record-breaking success of the Marvel mega-movie has marked Whedon as Hollywood’s current hottest property (Cabin in the Woods, his ace collaboration with Drew Goddard, is doing okay too…). And with the whiff of mainstream acceptance in the air, he has taken to his blog to show his appreciation for his more zealous supporters. Here’s what he wrote…

Dear Friends,

Well, it’s been quite a weekend. Someday, long from now, I will even have an emotional reaction to it, like a person would. I can’t wait! But before I become blinded by this “emotion” experience, there’s a few things I’d like to say. Well, type.

So this is me, saying thank you. All of you. You’ve taken as much guff for loving my work as I have for over-writing it, and you deserve, in this our time of streaming into the main, to crow. To glow. To crow and go “I told you so”, to those Joe Blows not in the know. (LAST time I hire Dr. Seuss to punch my posts up. Yeesh!) Point being, you deserve some honor, AND you deserves some FAQs answered.

People have told me that this matters, that my life is about to change. I am sure that is true. And change is good — change is exciting. I think — not to jinx it — that I may finally be recognized at Comiccon. Imagine! Also, with my percentage of “the Avengers” gross, I can afford to buy… [gets call from agent. Weeps manfully. Resumes typing.] …a fine meal. But REALLY fine, with truffles and s#!+. And I can get a studio to finance my dream project, the reboot of “Air Bud” that we all feel is so long overdue. (He could play Jai Alai! Think of the emotional ramifications of JAI ALAI!!!!)

What doesn’t change is anything that matters. What doesn’t change is that I’ve had the smartest, most loyal, most passionate, most articulate group of — I’m not even gonna say fans. I’m going with “peeps” — that any cult oddity such as my bad self could have dreamt of. When almost no one was watching, when people probably should have STOPPED watching, I’ve had three constants: my family and friends, my collaborators (often the same), and y’all. A lot of stories have come out about my “dark years”, and how I’m “unrecognized”… I love these stories, because they make me seem super-important, but I have never felt the darkness (and I’m ALL about my darkness) that they described. Because I have so much. I have people, in my life, on this site, in places I’ve yet to discover, that always made me feel the truth of success: an artist and an audience communicating. Communicating to the point of collaborating.

I’ve thought, “maybe I’m over; maybe I’ve said my piece”. But never with fear. Never with rancor. Because of y’all. Because you knew me when. If you think topping a box office record compares with someone telling you your work helped them through a rough time, you’re probably new here. (For the record, and despite my inhuman distance from the joy-joy of it: topping a box office record is super-dope. I’m an alien, not a robot.)

The trailer for Ben Affleck’s political thriller Argo has hit the net, take a look:

Back behind the camera again after two critically successful efforts in Gone Baby Gone and The Town, Affleck has brought to the screen the true story of a group of people tasked with extracting US citizens from a turbulent Iran under the guise of a Hollywood production. The trailer doesn’t really get good until Aerosmith kicks in and all the tension mounts – the little thirty second segment in the middle that sells the ZANY premise of the film makes it seem a little schizophrenic – but Argo does appear to be another potentially solid film from Affleck the director.

Fascinating Fact: Jack Kirby, co-creator of The Avengers alongside Stan Lee, was involved in the Argo operation. and will be played by Michael Parks (the Sheriff with the shades in Kill Bill).

What do you think, does Argo look like a good follow up to The Town? Does Ben Affleck look cool with a beard? Will you ever trust anyone other than Ben Affleck to direct Ben Affleck in a movie again?

The trailer underlines that Spider-Man will be more openly wisecracking than before, which puts him closer to the personality of his comic counterpart. But the most intriguing part of this footage is a sinister figure asking The Lizard (in human form) whether he has “Told the boy about his father”. Which villain is this? We know the ‘Proto-Goblin’ will be played by Indian actor Irrfan, but here is someone else…

It’ll be interesting to see what else The Amazing Spider-Man does to disguish itself from the previous films. They’ve said it will be darker. There’s more footage here of a bridge and a burning car hanging off it. That’s roughly how Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone) died in the comic, so I wonder if killing her is the route to that darkness?

The Amazing Spider-Man stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. It opens in the US on July 3, and a day later in the UK.

There really isn’t a great deal to say about this follow-up to The Expendables beyond that if you derive pleasure from Sylvester Stallone’s preposterous gargoyled-in-plastic fizzog and incomprehensible jabbering then this looks very much the movie for you.

Stallone is back from in this follow-up to his 2010 hit, as are his co-stars from that opener, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Stahtam, Randy Couture, Jet Li and Terry Crews. Also back are Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, both of whom have apparently been given expanded roles in this sequel – a point seemingly borne out by their Smart Car-bothering antics in the new trailer.

There are several ‘new’ faces too, in the weather-beaten shapes of Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme (on bad guy duties), as well as Liam Hemsworth, adding some possibly needed teen appeal. And then there’s Novak Djokavic. Mmm, that’s right. The Serb tennis ace reportedly puts in an appearance in Expendables 2. Why? Buddy, if you’re asking that question then you really don’t get what this movie’s all about…

And despite a slight detour into dramatic normalcy with A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, and A Dangerous Method, it looks like ole Crony is back to his old tricks with Cosmopolis.

Here is a little taste:

Starring Robert Pattinson, who moped and sparkled his way through five Twilight movies, and based on a book by acclaimed literati Don DeLillo, this little whacked out flick is sure to get Cronenberg superfans back on board the freak train.

Fast Six Casting – Luke Evans As Villain. And Rihanna?

The sixth Fast and the Furious movie starts shooting this month, ahead of a release in just over a year’s time, meaning that it’s hardly surprising that director Justin Lin and producer Neal Moritz are racing (sorry) to secure their cast. Many of the actors are franchise returnees, although there are also some new faces being added, including (if rumours are to be believed) Rihanna and Luke Evans.

Having razzed round Rio last time out, Universal’s Fast and the Furious franchise is visiting the rain-sodden British Isles for its new outing – hence an apparent need for a Brit villain.

And with Jason Statham having previously said “Nah, can’t do it, mate”, an offer has reputedly gone out to Luke Evans, star of Immortals, The Raven, and what is sure to be this Christmas’s biggest movie, The Hobbit.

Possibly joining Evans is popstrel Rihanna, who actually gives a pretty decent account of herself in another Universal production, Battleship (certainly far better than Mrs. Andy Roddick, but that is another matter entirely). She, like Evans, will apparently also play a villainous role, thereby potentially pitting her against returning stars Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez and, of course, Vin Diesel.

And there could be yet another fresh presence joining Fast Six too, with MMA fighter-turned actress Gina Carano having recently confirmed that she is in line for a cameo appearance:

We’re still in negotiations for it, but that was a really good phone call to get… my role would be kind of a small role – I don’t think it would be too big or anything, but it would still be a great experience to be a part of something like that.
