Following these “suggestions” I saw Insidious last night and was pretty let down by it. The movie has some good ideas but basically, it’s a remix of different other movies of the genre. The scene where dad’s on the other side is rather hilariously awkward. On the other hand, I liked the ghosthunter team and the 80′s feel about it.
The most annoying thing about this movie, though, was the sound. It’s like “whisper whisper whisper BAAAANG… whisper whisper whisper BAAAAAAARGH… [dissonant violins]….”. I think this trend of making horror movies scarier by adding loud bangs is cheap and annoying, specially when you watch the movie on DVD at night and you have to turn up the volume in order to actually hear the conversations and the suddenly big noise that makes you press the remote like in a reaction test so the neighbors don’t turn up clutching an axe because they fell out of bed three times now.

I think hands down the scaries movies in 2011 were Paranormal Activity 3 and Insidious. I don’t think predictable movies were everyone gets murdered by a crazy serial killer is true horror. I think that when peole watch scary movies that they actually want to be scared, not just watch a group of people one by one get killed and their blood and guts slatter everywhere. I don’t know if it’s just me but that’s not scary, it’s just stupid.

I don’t think you actually read the article. This covers the best and worst. The Darkest Hour is listed as one of the worst of the year. Why you don’t think Final Destination is a horror movie is bizarre. Grave Encounters isn’t here because we didn’t include straight to dvd. The average critical and public response puts it very far from the best of the year. It’s half way decent derivative found footage.
