In the last ten minutes of the film I started laughing. It was the kind of laugh that I had been holding in for a while (I was watching it with others and didn’t know if they liked it or not) and then suddenly the laugh just burst out and I couldn’t stop laughing for the next 30 minutes. Even now, I start laughing when I see the name War Horse.

In one way I do not believe this film is meant as a drama but as a parody of drama and all the clichés seen in films. It takes the sentimentality to such extreme degrees that I believe I can see hidden laughs behind the face of the actors.

You know when children play they often invent the most extreme? Once, I was playing a fantasy role playing game with my smaller brothers (age 10) and I asked them to come up with an idea for a spell and they suggested a spell that would effectively let them kill all the monsters in one go and they called the spell “Devil of Cat”. They got so excited when they could start imagining any magic that they went to the extreme of it which basically made it pointless to continue playing the game.

This is how I feel the film played out. Spielberg was allowed to come up with the most extreme sentimental bullshit ever imagined by man or beast and as a result every scene in the film is over the top sentimental and dramatic.

Thank you for the review! I was afraid I was alone in seeing the absurdity in the film.

2. You’re correct, I did not finish kindergarten. However, I did not finish kindergarten because I did not attend kindergarten at all. I was educated completely outside the American school system, public and private, and was scoring college-level scores on SAT tests since I was twelve. So I know how to read (you should never capitalize the first letter after a comma, by the way) and I also understand story structure and film language since I’ve worked in the film industry for over a decade.

All that aside, just because a movie has an animal in it doesn’t give it a right to disregard a technique and story structure just because it knows its audience only cares about the cute wittle aminals.

Don’t sell yourself short. You can demand better from your art and still watch animals in horrifying agony.
