That’s how I felt ALL through John Carter. Every non action scene was completely utilitarian. All emotion was conveyed through TALKING about emotion. It needed to slow down and take its time. Proper pacing, even with slower parts to allow for character development, actually ends up making the movie feel faster. Jamming quick-paced scenes back to back actually makes it seem tedious, ala Transformers 1, 2, and 3.

Comparing the Luke at home scenes is quite striking – a modern day blockbuster wouldn’t take time out for a moment of ‘poetry’ (looking at the twin suns) and in the interest of ‘pace’ the scene would never have run that long. Almost every scene in modern day blockbusters (that isn’t an action, comedy or suspense sequence) is incredibly short and to the point.
