Kick-Ass - Teaser Trailer

Kick-Ass Teaser Trailer
So we finally get our first look at Kick-Ass in action. I won’t go into the plot too much but basically it’s like Watchmen without the chip fat facial or the awkward sex scenes. It stars Aaron Johnson (Nowhere Boy), Nicolas Cage, Chloe Moretz (500 Days of Summer), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad) and has Mark Strong playing the bad guy. He must have a dastardly face as he’s also playing the adversary to Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes later this year.

Kick-Ass is one of those films that has had quite a buzz surrounding it due to some clever online promotion and of course the ever reliable fanboys who keep the word on the web flowing. Check out the trailer, I think the buzz is warranted…

Judging purely from this, Kick-Ass looks like it continues the trend of that certain type of teen movie where nerds and outsiders are the protagonists, films that often contain more than a sprinkling of that ironic and self conscious American Indie flavour. But of course it’s a superhero movie as well, granted the heroes lack the ’super’ of your Spidermans and X-Men but even so it will be interesting to see if the two genres/sub-genres combine as successfully as the trailer suggests. We’ll have to wait a while to find out though as the scheduled release date is not until April 16th of next year.

What do you think of the trailer? Also I’m interested to know from anyone who is a fan of the comics if, judging by this, it is in keeping with tone?

Mystery Men did this 10 years ago. And it was funnier than this looks. Seems ok, it’s like it’s constantly patting itself on the back for coming up with a concept that isn’t as fresh as it thinks it is. Interesting to see Nicolas Cage playing Batman.

I agree that this kind of format is becoming a regular cinema occurence now (see anything with Seth Rogen or Michael Cera) and maybe that diminishes the appeal a bit.
The trailer also makes it look quite juvenile, it’s like a show that would be on the Disney chanel.
Not that that is necesarily a bad thing but probably not that interesting to most adults.

I’d like to see a lot more about the characters and hopefully a full trailer will come out soon!

Personally, I think it looks good.

Mystery Men was an out and out slapstick comedy. This, if it keeps to the source material, is very black comedy. And whilst I think Mystery Men is probably the most underrated comedy of all time, it exists in a fantasy world. Kick-Ass looks like it’s grounded in a fanciful world instead - with much stronger real-world elements.
