Sherlock Holmes 2 – Sequel Plans

Sherlock Holmes 2 - Sequel Plans
There’s been a lot of Sherlock Holmes 2 talk in recent weeks. So what has been said and how likely is a sequel?

With Robery Downey Jr.’s Golden Globes win for ‘Best Actor In A Comedy Or Musical’ and a worldwide gross of over $350 million, Sherlock Holmes is a smash hit however you look at it. In the US it’s still high in the charts and will shortly pass the $200m mark. Not bad for a production budget of $90m.

Warner Bros. actually commissioned a script for Sherlock Holmes 2 three months before the first movie was even released. It’s becoming increasingly common for studios to do this for movies with pre-release ‘buzz’ as it enables a sequel to get into production faster, for less cost.

Since they did that they’re now in the process of locking down the cast for a June start date. Downey Jr. recently passed on the lead role in Jon Favreau’s Cowboys And Aliens to free up that time.

It’s not known whether Sherlock Holmes 2 will invent a new story or draw on previous Conan Doyle material but it is likely that Moriarty will step out of the shadows. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brad Pitt had discussions with producers back in September about the role. We don’t know yet if an agreement was reached. Of course Pitt has already worked with Guy Ritchie, on 2000’s Snatch, and it would be interesting to see him play his first out and out villain, although I’m not convinced he really ‘does’ accents. Of course Gary Oldman would be a great choice. Ralph Fiennes a safe one. Alan Rickman seems like he was born to play the role.

What would you like to see happen in the Sherlock Holmes sequel? Who should play Moriarty? Should Rachel McAdams return or was she miscast? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

It would be great to see the screen writers stay as close to the original books as possible.

Also, Cillian Murphy would make a good Moriarty.

Sherlock Holmes was an Action Adveture movie, not a comedy…

Anyhow, a Depp vs RDJ movie would be awesome.

@Rob – Cillian Murphy is a good shout. And in general he should get a lot more high profile work, I’ve never seen him give less than an excellent performance (28 Days Later, Sunshine, Batman Begins, Red Eye…)

@dnwilliams – The globes do not lie. It’s a musical.

You can’t look past Alan Rickman. He’s got the voice, the style and of course, the wonderful acting ability…plus the audience pull.

Yeah I’d like them to continue from where the first left off and cast Pitt,Oldman,or Murphy for the role of Moriarty. And yes Rachal McAdams should I liked her performance and she’s sexy as hell.

Alan Rickman would be the perfect choice to play Sherlock Holmes. I would definitely like to see a return to the classic Holmes genre, even if not necessarily an AC Doyle story. There is humor in Holmes, but it’s not a farce!

I do not, I repeat, DO NOT, want Brad Pitt to take the role of Moriarty. I think that the role of him should be played by a talented, less-known actor. I will be very disappointed if Brad Pitt gets the role. Not a smart move in my opinion. I dont think many people would approve of him in that movie. Nothing against Mr. Pitt, he is a good actor, but this genre is not his cup of tea.

I also think they should basically make it just like the first one. Same actors, same style, same everything, but just a different plot and storyline.

  • Rosie Walker said:

Seriously doubt Rickman would take the role as he is rather done with Villains, someone would need to convince him that the part was something new and different from anything he’d done in the past, either that or one of his “kids” (godchildren, nieces, nephew would have to ask him to do it that’s what got him to do Snape)

The minute the credits rolled, I said that Alan Rickman must be Moriarity!

Definatelly Alan Rickman to play the villan role.
    There’s no-one better than him.

  • Lynda said:

I agree Alan Rickman has turned away from villain roles. He does have the ability to bring a movie to a higher level of believability. I would enjoy a movie where he got more screen time.

I CANT WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE!!! i loved the 1st one and if there isnt a second i will cry

  • d22guinness said:

Sir Patrick Stewart, Alan Rickman or Gary Oldman would be perfect as Moriarity.

I would give Colin Farrell a nod for the Moriarity role before Brad Pitt. Ever since I saw “In Bruges (2008)” I have a lot more respect for Colin as an actor.

I agree with SH, they need to cast a less well known actor to play the role of Moriarity. Yes Rickman, Oldman or any other well known actor could portray the roll fairly well. But i think that there needs to be some new talent out there. And if a less well known actor portrays the roll opposite the great Robert Downey Jr. their career is guaranteed to skyrocket. It will give someone new a chance to get recognized.
