Percy Jackson 2 – Sequel Plans

Percy Jackson 2 - Sequel Plans (Sea Of Monsters movie)
There’s been a lot of Percy Jackson 2 talk in recent weeks. So what has been said and how likely is a sequel?

There are five books in the Percy Jackson series, so far. The next installment is ‘The Sea Of Monsters’ which sees Percy, Annabeth, and his half-brother Tyson the cyclopes sailing across a dangerous ocean to save the kidnapped Grover and retrieve the Golden Fleece (the only thing that can stop Camp Half-Blood being made vulnerable to an attack by the Titans).

At the London press conference last week director Chris Columbus said “If we are successful enough, I’d love to make another film almost immediately with these guys. We had a wonderful time. I love the enthusiasm and lack of cynicism. I want to go back to work quickly.”

And despite recent Spider-Man casting rumours, it doesn’t sound like star Logan Lerman is going anywhere either. “I’m invested into the whole series. I’m crazy about the story and crazy about the character, I’d love to do all the films.”

The reaction to the first film has been mixed. Critics gave it a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Casual members of the public seemed to half enjoy it. But many fans are angry. According to the feedback on this site and elsewhere, the book wasn’t just compressed (ala Harry Potter), it was “butchered”, its “heart taken out” with major plot re-routing, some characters altered beyond recognition, other key ones dropped entirely, etc. How this will affect repeat viewings and word of mouth we will have to see.

Lightning Thief has made $31 million on its opening weekend in the US. Not terrible, but not spectacular either. Internationally it opened with $28 million, which is underwhelming. It cost around $95 million. As of today, it needs to hold on well domestically and internationally to become a hit. If it does, there will be more.

What would you like to see happen in a Percy Jackson sequel? How can they improve on the first movie? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

    Definitely make a sequel!

If there is a sequel, keep it closer to the book (except don’t put the hydra in because it was already in the first movie.) Make Luke’s reappearance a surprise because it makes it look like he is dead at the end of the first movie.

I liked the first movie but it was too far from the book. The special effects were GREAT. Camp Half-Blood was amazing. Grover and Chiron had great effects on their legs. Medusa was creepy and was played really well.

I loved the Lightning thief movie and I think both the cast and crew did a fantastic job. People say that they butchered the movie, I must say I disagree, they captured the true nature of the film to me. I hope directs the remaining five films and I hope our current cast stays throughout the series.
Keep up the good work guys.

I agree w/ D Roberts, I read all the books and the movie left a lot of stuff out, but you can make that up in the next one. I think some characters like Clarisse and Mr. D have to be introduced as they are pretty important. My only complaints about the first movie (although i really liked it) are that you have to stick with the book and I think Annabeth’s actress has to improve. I did not find her character interesting at all in the movie.

Bring on the sequel, I enjoyed this film, and I totally get why some plotlines were dropped, they only focused on the plotlines that get wrapped up in book one so there’d be no cliff hangers if the sequel didn’t get greenlit

A sequel would be wonderful, but a lot of important plot information would need to be added right away (Kronos, the search for Pan, Thalia’s tree, the Prophecy ext). If Sea of Monsters became a movie, I’m sure everyone who saw the first one would go see it, just to see if they managed to put the plot back on track.

Well personally I loved the movie but I do wish that Clarisse was in the movie. Another thing it looked like Luke died. Plus what about Pan? Thalia’s tree? Percy’s prophecy? Those were huge points they missed. But I really loved the movie the Lotus Casino cracked me up, and if theree’s a Percy Jackson sequel I’ll definitely be in line to see it. I also liked all the actors they did a really good job.

To me the movie was good but it didn’t give enough background for a sequel. I can completely understand why the Kronos plotline was dropped, but only if this movie is meant to stand alone.
The whole reason Percy doesn’t know his dad is not accurate and would require a lot of excusing/explaining which would slow the movie down and leave the veiwer wondering “Why didn’t they just explain this in the first movie?”

Also, a lot of the character’s traits and ectentricites that made the book so endearing were omitted. It’s ok to watch a movie about whiny gods once, but there needs to be some more character development in characters other then the Big Three (meaning Percy, Annibeth, Grover) without the characters that made the books memorable (like Aphoridtie, Aries, the REAL Hades, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Tyson, Hephestius) a sequel would be weak.

How you supposed to do a movie from book where Kronos and Clarisse are in big role, when they WEREN’T in first movie even?
Movie was epic fail. It has so many differences, and things that weren’t in book ):
I know, they changed it a little [A LOT] (for more watchers), but still, I don’t think that it would be good idea to do another movie.

Hollywood, please don’t ruin good books!

    sequel?? bring it on!!

I love the books! They’re awesome.
I’m totally addicted to it and so I hoped that the movie would be a lot like the book, but well unfortunately it’s not. There are a lot of important information in the book that’s not included on this movie. But I still enjoyed watching it though. It’s funny and entertaining. Love the actors too especially Logan Lerman <3.

I liked the movie a lot. The actors and actresses did a great job! But i agree that there were a lot of things in the book that the movie missed. You would have to make those up in the sequel but i totally think there should be one.

My friend and i loved the books and would love to see all of them on screen.

I think the second movie will be a success, only if they stick to the book.

In the first movie, the cast did brilliantly, and yes, us fans were disappointed with the lack of resemblance between the movie and the book, but we were glad that TLT had the privilege to be turned into a modestly successful film.

The whole plot in the movie was changed, as a nereid gave them the pearls in the book, whereas in the film they had to find Persephone’s pearls.

I’m glad with the outcome of the movie, and I can’t wait for a second movie.

I wish in the 2nd movie, Clarisse would actually be there and lets make Luke be out on surprise so it would seem more intersting… Also, where did the Oracle of Delhi go in the Lightning Thief movie?

Well, the first movie wasn’t that great, but it was good. I liked the part of the Medusa lair and in the Underworld.

I absolutely loved the books! But I also enjoyed the movie very much!! & I am begging for ALL of the books to be made into movies. Yes I do understand that they took caution with this movie just in case they couldn’t make the rest, but if I could do anything to ensure that all five books would be made into movies I’ll do it, just ask!! Plus the sequel could easily introduce Clarisse & move towards the more colorful characters of the book!! I really want to see the Hunters in action and I want to know what actor would play Nico!! Please! Please make the other books into movies!!

I really enjoyed the movie, but I do agree that there were major plot points missing and several misinterpreted characters.
To start, where was Mr. D? I know he’s not a large character, but he would have brought more humor to the film. And where was Ares? He had a major impact on the plot…
I also thought that they interepreted Percy, Annabeth, and Grover completely wrong.
Percy should have had more humor and should not have been as serious all the time. However, I believe this is due to the script, as Logan Lerman did a fabulous job playing him.
Annabeth should not have been as vunerable. They should have spoken more about her background, and she and Percy should not have been that interested in each other yet.
Grover should have been more hesitant about things, and they should have mentioned Pan.
Overall, I do believe they should make a sequel, because as a fan of other book-turned-movies, I know they usually do not get things right. Honestly, I would love to see a sequel…
