Batman Ends – Christopher Nolan On Fate Of Dark Knight
13.03.10 # News # 11 Comments
Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan has spoken out about the future of the Batman franchise, where he intends to take it, and its relationship to the Superman movie he is now shepherding. Quotes below…
“We have a great ensemble, that’s one of the attractions of doing another film, since we’ve been having a great time for years,” he told the LA Times.
“Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story,” the film-maker added. “And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story.”
“I’m very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we’ve done with the characters,” Nolan said. “My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these things don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling. And it harkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That’s what we do.”
As disappointing as it may be for some fans to hear that this incarnation of Batman will come to a definite end, hopefully it’s the right creative decision. If the Nolan Trilogy ends in a similar fashion The Bourne Ultimatum, for instance, completing an emotional journey, then we’ll be in for a very satisfying conclusion. I think the key phrase here is “viewing it as an ending”, implying that’s not what it ultimately is… On the other hand, many nerd tears will be shed when Nolan and Co jump ship and leave the franchise in hands unknown, but nothing lasts forever.
As for how Batman relates to Superman, Nolan had this to say:
“Each serves to the internal logic of the story. They have nothing to do with each other,” said Nolan, adding: “A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us that’s what I know how to do.”
Which is PERFECT, Batman and Superman never made sense in a shared universe.

Thank god Nolan has come to save us from what could have been yet another disappointing superman story.
Superman is a pu**y.
Man nobody I know likes Superman!
When he does Superman. He should do an origin story that put the Kryton like another 21st century earth. With the Krytonian humans be exactly like Earth humans. Yet Superman’s bio father should be a scientist who discovers that Kryton will be destroyed by its Gas Giant Red Sun in a matter of days, and because he wants to ensure that his offspring lives on, he contructs a spaceship with the capability of traveling faster than light, using a never beforce uses hyperdrive or warp drive system. The father will would had discovered that the Sun and it solar system, and will theorize that Krytonion humans can posess superhuman strength in a solar system of a yellow sun. He would had theorize based on old wive tells that there is a habitable planet near the Sun that of which his son may be able to continue to live, just in case his theory is wrong about the yellow sun. This would be a good story that would had a lot of realism to it.
Bah at least they’re not going to recast the JOKER!
@Lorraine – Does he actually say that?
DC Entertainment and Warner Brothers would be crazy to allow some sort of ending that does not allow for sequels. But They should be very protective of the product. These characters should be treated with respect. They have huge audiences of well versed fans.
well batman and superman could be a powerhouse if u portray them right like in the animated movie (batman superman public enemies)now that was a beautiful movie and id love to see something like that in live action but the idea of batman the greatest human (non super powered)being in the comic universe working along side with the greatest alien (super powered) being is almost impossible to put on the big screen….but i think if Nolan treads really carefully on this one it could be a beautiful movie…..
ENDING BATMAN IS RETARDED!
a superman origin movie just would suck!
nolan should not end the batman franchise but replace batman if anything. just like in multiple comics and cartoons.
the superman franchise should just end. its a lame story line that makes no sense. most comics are far fetched but at least with almost every other superhero theres that what if factor
“We are so ready for a new batman movie”
at the end of the darknyt, batman has become an outlaw, now imagine if in the nu movie batman is being chased by superman and somehow batman accidentaly had some kryptonite, so that the fight can be fair
