Smokey and the Bandit III was supposed to be called Smokey IS the Bandit and Jackie Gleason was going to be the Bandit because he believed the films were popular because of him, not Burt Reynolds. That is why the third film was such a mess. There was even a promo shown in theaters with Gleason announcing the name of the film as Smokey is the Bandit.
