The Last Airbender 2 – Sequel Plans

There’s been a lot of Last Airbender 2 talk in recent weeks. So what has been said and how likely is a sequel?
With a production budget of $150m, and $130m spent on marketing, Paramount want a worldwide take of $280m before greenlighting any Last Airbender sequel. The first movie has grossed $115m so far in the US and will likely finish around $140m, but it is yet to open in most major territories around the world. With the fanbase and the inflated ticket price of 3D, it may get within spitting distance when all is counted. Significantly, a Last Airbender sequel would reportedly cost less than the original movie.
But while a healthy number of people flocked to see it (based on the popularity of the TV series, Shyamalan’s name still being a draw, and the family-friendly subject matter), the reaction from nearly all was crushing disappointment. 92% of critics disliked or hated it. While the fans had this to say -
Remarkably, this reaction doesn’t seem to have phased writer-director M.Night Shyamalan much. Maybe he’s used to it after Lady In The Water and The Happening.
If he’s given the green light, he’s says that the main villain in The Last Airbender 2 will be Azula, the “only real, pure antagonist” in the proposed trilogy. Azula (Summer Bishil) had a brief role in the first movie. In the TV show the character is a destructive Firebending prodigy who becomes obsessed with capturing the Avatar. She eventually rises to the position of Fire Lord where she loses her sanity.
The elite female Kyoshi Warriors will also play a key role in any Last Airbender 2. They were initially in the first film, and M.Night shot a carefully choreographed scene with them, but he chose to cut it from the final print for being too “distracting from the movie”.
Tonally the second film will be “darker”, while the third will be “more ambiguous”. The 3D will be much improved, as M.Night plans to actually shoot in 3D this time, rather than convert after filming is complete.
So the question posed here is can a movie that is hated equally by critics, fans and general audiences alike, but that breaks even financially and has a director determined to push forward, get a sequel? Paramount will probably wait for Blu-ray/DVD sales before deciding. Watch this space.
What would you like to see happen in any Last Airbender sequel? How can they improve on the first movie? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Personally I thought it was crap. I know they were gonna have to skip a lot even for the longest of feature films. But to change what actually happened was wrong. To mispronounce names was wrong. To think that M.K.S could write, direct, produce a movie was wrong (personal opinion cuz I don’t like most of his stuff).
Most of the problems with the movie could have been fixed by one thing. Not letting M.K.S. near it.
Just one qestion mr. d, if you don’t like his work, then why waste your time watching to movie????
Ive seen the show, ive seen the movie. THE MOVIE WAS GOOD!!!! Iwant to see any of you make a movie, because i gurantee that its more than you’ve done.
Idk why ppl keep talking trash. The movie was not bad. I actually really liked it. So it didn’t follow with the tv series but it was still good. I enjoyed the bending techniques and the directors intentions with the movie that I actually hope they do come out with the the second third and fourth soon just cuz Aang is supposed to stay a kid the entire time. Lol I don’t care. I liked it and I don’t care if any of u disagree with me. Blah blah blah go cry somewhere. I’ve seen other horrible movies like dragonball z. Now that one they messed up bad lol. That one really sucked. But this one I really liked. Im all about sci-fi movies.
u can’t expect all movies to follow through completely cuz then they’d be as long and boring as Harry Potter. Im sorry but I liked the books but the movies we’re tooooo long which bored me quickly. Lol that’s just my opinion.
I loved this movie and can’t wait to see the next one. I don’t understand why so many of you trashed it. It was interesting to watch, and who cares about it not being like avatar I think that was the point of the writer, he just wanted to be different. Why are so many people scared of change? The only thing I think it needs is to be longer then the original. I mean I like fighting movie and kunfu flicks but they are getting a little boaring because they are all the same. This move combinds kunfu with the element bending in avatar i think it was a great idear, and it is good for the whole family. I guess all you people want to see is blood and guts. well then this is not for you, stick to your boaring kunfu movies with the sub titles, which by the way if i wanted to read something i would read a book. anyhow i will be hitting the movies when the next one comes out, and i think it is taking too long for them to come ot with the second one, it is time to see the avatar learn earth and fire, can’t wait!!!!
I loved the movie and the series!
If they make a second movie i would want to see when katara learns bloodbending,
But I guess since thats in book 3 that would be in the third movie…
i loved the first movie and am hoping they will make another.
M.Night Shyamalan is a excellent diretor and writer. one of my favorites so i know it will turn out great if they let him make one
(1) Since they’re trying to compress 1 season of an action cartoon into 1 movie, it should have had more action, (2) the narrations to move things forward are OK, but the “expository dialog” where the characters just stand there and expalin things (not even in natural flowing grammar either), that was really bad. For example, Prince Zuko calls a little boy over to ask what he knows about the prince as a way of revaling his own back story — the general idea is not bad, but it would have been SOOOO much better if they had the characters act it out as the little boy’s voice over narrated the flashback — having Zuko constantly interupt the boy & explain things in dry dialog was really bad.
Also, when they talked about finding a secret library, they should have had a flash back…. watching to characters stand there & talk about it is not such a good idea.
My comment is that LAB was not very excitng. we were waiting for so,ething very exciting than that. Aang was very young and Th e oncle of Zuko(Irro) isn’t very old and his belly isn’t fat. The characters that we have seen in the Comic trip. you have to be realist. Some exciting action in the LAB hasn’t been reproduced. A part from that, that’s rignt.
Well obviously some of you are morons. I have children and they and their friends enjoyed it. Who cares if a couple of adults that obviously don’t have kids didn’t like it. My husband and I enjoyed it probably because we are used to kids movies and we as well as all the kids I know keep asking when we think there is going to be a second movie.
oh yeah, and if the kids like it, guess what, they will make their parents take them to the theatre to watch it and hey there’s your money maker.
Otakus everywhere could make a better Airbender movie and for a lot less….at least they know how to pronounce the names correctly!
I am so sorry people but there is not going to be another Airbender movie from M.Knight, the reason is that Nick and the other studios were very upset about the out come and the fan’s reaction,I think they need to make the movie but without M.Knight and maybe make it a little bit longer and more detailed, with better actors cause really they seems like from the start that the the main people the in the movie didn’t know what they were doing as in the acting was terrible and bending itself was all wrong espcially the earth bender it look like they were dancing together like they were in a crew,I was waiting for someone to say,”You got Served”LOL sorry it could’ve been soon much better but that;s what you get for rushing movies out
I loved the movie, books, etc are always better, but i am totally excited for the next to be released!!!!
I realy liked the movie, I loved all the action in. You should realy do a sequal. The on thing I think you could change would be to make Sokka more funny like in the cartoon
