Karl Urban Cast As Judge Dredd

New Judge Dredd Movie 2011 - The role of Judge Dredd has finally been cast! After a new version of the classic British comic was announced a few months ago, the actor chosen to fill the boots of Megacity One’s most badass cop is none other than Karl Urban.

Urban, recognisable for his roles in The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek and, um, Doom is a pretty good choice for the role. But, wait, there’s more! In a Q&A session at Movie-Con, producer Andrew MacDonald had the following to say:

“The main thing about Dredd is that it’s a fantastic comic that was completely messed up 20 years ago. Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real. There’s been a change in comic-book movies; they were treated unseriously and now they’re treated seriously. We’ve cast a guy called Karl Urban to play Dredd. We’ll be shooting in Johannesburg, it’s being directed by Pete Travis, we’re shooting with the people who did District 9 – and if we get it right, Alex has a couple of ideas for other stories as well. It’s not based on any one comic, and John Wagner is involved in every decision.”

So, not only do they have a great actor in an iconic role, but the original creator of Dredd is on board and so are crew members of District 9, Movie-Moron’s favourite film of 2009. This is definately a project to watch out for.

Solid choice for the lead. They’ve got a great team for this. Can’t wait to see it.

So they’re remaking this one huh? Hopefully they won’t make silly mistakes to muck it up. I.E. Having Dredd remove his mask. Nonetheless Urban is a good choice.

    Absolutely Sheridan,

Its about time someone did this character justice.

There are so many memorable possible story lines available for a Judge Dredd movie, personally I would love to see Judge Death eventually if this franchise continues.

    What!?

You mean we won’t have the awesome chemistry between Rob Schneider and Sylvester Stallone.

    “I am the law”!

    I’m excited about the revision!

Here’s Rob Schneider falling on his face during filming, literally -

The first movie was a travesty to Judge Dredd, possibly the toughest character in comics, from removing his helmet to kissing judge Hershey. They couldn’t even get Mean Machines dial numbers the right way round. Lets hope Karl Urban’s ego doesn’t get in the way like Stallone’s did and they stick true to the character and his history

I doubt it will be any worse than the original. Plus, Karl Urban is a solid actor in my opinion, so as long as it is well written as the first film was really not it will work out nicely.

I like Karl Urban as an actor and think he’ll be awesome as Dredd.
Alec Baldwin would have been a good choice too. His character of Casey in chuck isn’t too far from what Dredd should be like.

I gotta say, I am skeptical. They keep saying they’re gonna be true to the comics, and then using words like “dark and gritty.”

Judge Dredd was not dark and gritty. Anyone who thinks so has not read the comics.

Mega City One had an ape for a mayor…literally! I could go with dark, but JD is all kinds of funny. This movie should be a twisted and dark comedy.

They should do a story line of Judge Dredd against Judge Deth, I used to love those story lines.

I agree with Wedge.Dark comedy horror, but i’d add lurid dayglow colors and make it camp.Dredd should not be taken too seriously.Lets face it ,in the world of dredd everybody is insane including the judges and if you can think of it somebody will be doing it.From what i’ve read it seems like they’re gonna go for playing it straight and violent which is a shame because there’s a wealth of totaly mental concepts in dredd to play around with but i guess they haven’t got the budget.I’ve got this horrible feeling that people are gonna be saying that the stalone effort wasn’t so bad after this comes out!?!

Karl Urban? Good choice, but maybe Bruce Campell would have been a better one.
