Horror Movies 2011 – Guide

- MARCH -

Red Riding Hood
Release Date: 11 March 2011
Starring: Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Max Irons, Julie Christie, Virginia Madsen
Director: Catherine Hardwicke

2011 Horror Movies - List
Gothic retelling of the Red Riding Hood fable, set in a village haunted by a werewolf, with a teenage love triangle at its centre. Valerie, the girl with the Red Riding Hood, seeks the assistance of a hunter to fight the creature. Anything with Gary Oldman and a werewolf is worthy of attention. The story of the wolf-disguised-as-grandmother was published by the Brothers Grimm in the 19th century, but earlier versions from the Middle Ages were darker and sometimes featured a werewolf instead/Riding Hood being eaten. This all sounds intriguing, but is the director of the poorly-shot Twilight really up to the job? David Leslie Johnson (Orphan) wrote the script.

Insidious
Release Date: 1 April 2011
Starring: Patrick Wilson, Rose Bryne, Lin Shaye, Ty Simpkin, Barbara Hershey
Director: James Wan

best-new-horror-movies-2011-insidious.jpg
The partnership that created Saw, James Wan and Leigh Whannell, tackle the haunted house movie, attempting to “twist it on its head”. The story sees a family discovering that the body of their comatose boy has become a magnet for malevolent entities. Now they must race to prevent his consciousness being trapped in the dark and insidious realm known as “The Further”. So instead of haunted house, think haunted boy. It’s in the same territory as 1982′s Poltergeist, complete with psychics and parents entering the ‘spirit world’ to rescue their child. The creative team, paired with the producers of Paranormal Activity, are talented, so expect some good frights.

Mother’s Day
Release Date: 1 April 2011
Starring: Jamie King, Rebecca De Mornay, Patrick Flueger, Briana Evigan, Shawn Ashmore
Director: Darren Lynn Bousman

best-new-horror-movies-2011-mothers-day.jpg
Remake of the 1980 Troma ‘cult classic’, Mother’s Day is a psychological horror-thriller that sees a sadist family return to their childhood home to terrorize the new home owners and their guests. Jamie King and Rebecca De Mornay play the mothers of each family. Director Darren Lynn Bousman brought us Saw II – IV and Repo! The Genetic Opera. De Mornay excels in this sort of role, but is the movie really based on a compelling idea?

Rubber
Release Date: 1 April 2011
Starring: A Psychic Tire
Director: Quentin Dupieux

Scream 4
Release Date: 15 April 2011
Starring: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Emma Roberts
Director: Wes Craven

best-new-horror-movies-2011-scream-4.jpg
Scream transformed the horror landscape when it came out in ’96, kicking off the second slasher cycle (the first was after Halloween) and bringing a truly unique tone to the genre. Brilliantly directed as it was, it was Kevin Williamson’s script that really was a cut above. Scream 2 was largely a success too. Then the studio stupidly booted Williamson for the third instalment and the result was something like a Scooby Doo episode. We’re excited about Scream 4 because Williamson is back, and there are 10 years of horror movies (from Asian ghost movies to torture porn) to riff off, in that clever but still frightening way. It’s going to be interesting to see how the clearly-too-old-to-be-doing-this cast (Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox) is melded with the new generation (Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere etc). Will they kill off Sidney Prescott?

John Carpenter’s The Ward
Release Date: 15 April 2011
Starring: Amber Heard, Lyndsy Fonseca, Jared Harris, Danielle Panabaker
Director: John Carpenter

best-new-horror-movies-2011-the-ward.jpg
A woman with amnesia (Heard) is admitted to a psychiatric ward, where she meets other equally disturbed young woman. When they start to be murdered by a mysterious spectre at night, she realises she must find a way out of the ward before it’s too late. John Carpenter created classic after classic early in his career but the last 25 years have been very patchy. In fact, this is his first movie since Ghosts Of Mars in 2001. Every horror fan hopes he’s back on form, because if he is there’s no one better. But the trend says he won’t be.

Not interested in any remakes, pirhanna, fright night, or the thing which was awesome with kurt russell and dont want to see them mess that one up but they will, just any new ideas they have, the sequels and remakes they can keep. with so many great horror writers out there whose works have gone untouched, f. paul wilson, dean koontz, norman partridge, david wellington to name a few, even stephen king has some scary novels that have gone untouched on the screen, bag of bones for example, why keep looking back to the 80′s for ideas and just bring us new ones. enuff reboots, remakes, sequles, prequels, jesus just go to the book store and pick a horror novel and make a movie about is , geeesshhh.

Why are so many of you so content with remakes and sequels? What we need is a really scary original movie; one that will make them scream in the aisles, running to the bathroom, or snack bar for some breath. It is time America lives up to her crown as reigning movie Nation, stemming from Hollywood USA!

Yes, I do believe the stiripS are ready to set this in noitoM!

This puritanical (sounds like tyrranical) Nation has diluted true horror, because obviously, they are expecting movies and tv and actors and musicians to set some kind of example (especially for their kids) that they themselves have neglected. Meanwhile, all this over glamorized gore slips through the cracks, so long as it is over the top, so that their children won’t feel like it is reality (all while their parents are absent) as their true examples. Prozac was not created for nothing, if you know what I mean.

Eventually, all this will be broken, and true horror will once again shine forth upon the silver screens! Hellalua!

How are they gonna do human centipede part 2?

  • Mario said

The Roommate is of course just a cheap knock off of the original SWF, which starred two much better actresses. The Human Centipede, once again, is another sequel. WTF?

Just finished watching the resident it is a brilliant film full of suspense and had me glued.

    The performances were so convincing.

Definately the new genre of horror (psychology) from Hammer..

    Christopher Lee included! :)

At least the bulk of these look to be heading away from the “teenagers in trouble” films of late. They’ve been taking perfectly good ideas (or worse yet..the dreaded remake) and ruining them with the same premise…”let’s sneak out, have a party, show off zero acting ability, get picked off one by one, all to the backdrop of obscure heavy metal music”. Snore!! Sick of it! Thankful for ‘The Raven’, ‘Woman in Black’, etc. finally breaking the trend.
