The Dark Knight Rises – 6 Actresses, 2 Roles!
17.11.10 # Sequel # 26 Comments
There are to be two female leads in the upcoming Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises, one love interest and one villain. The shortlist of actresses in competition for those roles has been released and it looks like this:
Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts

These two are probably the cream of the crop. They’re actresses in a similar vein to ones that director Christopher Nolan has worked best with in the past like Carrie Anne Moss, Hilary Swank, Rebecca Hall and Marion Cotillard. A quick Google search will soon tell you that Weisz has long been a fan-favourite for Catwoman, and speculation still centres around Catwoman and Talia Head (the daughter of Batman Begins’s Ra’s Al Ghul) for the villainess of the movie, either of which Weisz would be more than capable of playing. Weisz and Watts are also the eldest. Seniority.
Anne Hathaway, Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley just seems not-quite-right for a Batman movie. She’d have to be the love interest because there is NO WAY anybody is buying her as a villain, and the thought of her playing opposite Christian Bale as a love interest just seems…wrong. Like the chemistry would be strange. Off. Anne Hathaway certainly seems like the more natural choice out of the two.
Blake Lively, Natalie Portman

Okay, so, there’s clearly no rule against starring in more than one superhero movie. In fact, such a rule would be ridiculous – you’d have Ryan Reynolds in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and not in a Green Lantern movie. Heinous. But at the same time these movies tend to require similar things from their performers. It’s the same with any genre, but given that both Portman and Lively are playing love interests to men with secret identities in other films that have yet to be released, neither should be in any rush to take on a similar role any time soon, no matter the pedigree of the franchise.
What do you think of the actresses named so far? Who would you want to see them play? The to actresses chosen will join the newest edition to the Batman cast, Tom Hardy. Filming begins in April in New Orleans .

It’s a fairly bland choice of the usual names, with one up-and-comer in Blake Lively.
Naomi Watts would go well as a love interest.
I’ve seen too many bad performances from Rachel Weisz, she’s over-rated to me.
Anne Hathaway and Keira Knightley are both too annoying.
Portman and Lively have too much baggage from other major franchises.
Hilary Swank or Kate Beckinsale would be more interesting to me than most on the list.
I’m gonna assume you haven’t seen The Constant Gardener or The Brothers Bloom.
Excuse me Sheridan but if you think Kate Beckinsale is a better actress than Rachel Weisz, you don’t know what real acting is. Rachel is hands down the best actress on that list, despite the personal problem you might have towards her.
I had to suffer Rachel Weisz in two Mummy movies and Chain Reaction. You’re excused.
You should know better than that, The Mummy and Chain Reaction are made for TV movies, they don’t count. AND, AND two of them had Brandon Frasier in them, he is up against Keanu Reeves for the worst actor of all time.
Of the four actresses, Rachel Weisz is hands down the most talented and versatile. I would give her the villain role.
I would give the other role to Anne Hathaway.
Of the choices presented:
Rachel Weisz; Great actress, one of the best we have. She would fit perfectly in Nolan’s world. Best choice on the list.
Naomi Watts: Good actress that would do well in Nolan’s world.
Anne Hathaway: Decent actress, could fit.
Keira Knightley: Maybe
Natalie Portman: Maybe
Blake Lively: God no.
Beckinsale is over-rated! Knightley and Watts couldn’t act their way out of a paper bag.
Anne Hathaway is annoying but I thought she showed range in Alice in Wonderland. I’m on the fence about Blake Lively and Natalie Portman playing anyrole in this film.
I have a thing for Rachel Weisz so she would be my pick. Not that she is that much better than Knightley and Watts she just has that “Je ne sais quoi”.
I think kate beckinsale is one of the most talented and beautiful women to walk the planet. Did you see her in underworld.
Love her
Is that fact? Surely the love interest is also a potential villain?
Also, as these are on the “shortlist” does that mean no-one else could get the roles?
I don’t particularly think any of them would be right.
So much for my hopes of a Marion Cotillard/Poison Ivy.
As much as I dislike Keira Knightley she would probably make a good Harley Quinn but I don’t expect to see that character.
I don’t really know much about Talia al Ghul but I would expect a more “ethnic” looking actor to play that part.
No complaints about the choices. Their all good actresses with true potential.Whoever the choice is I just want this film to come out good. And I really hope they don’t go with catwoman as a villian.
Why no Catwoman?
Check out Keira Knightley in Never Let Me Go, she made a pretty good villain there. I don’t think either Anne Hathaway nor Keira Knightley are annoying, they are both good actresses and would fit either part very well.
However, given that we are getting the same names for all the big blockbuster parts being considered, I don’t know if any of the actresses mentioned will actually get the part.
@ dnwilliams- I’m just tired of seeing her as a protagonist. I mean don’t get me wrong, she’s a good character, but we’ve seen her so much and to me it would just boring to watch her in the film.
I agree.
I see. I’d be happy to see Catwoman seeing as how she’s never been done right, but she is overexposed I guess…
I liked the Michelle Pfeiffer version a lot. And that was a fairly realistic treatment of the character. I feel like I’ve seen it. And there’s a dozen other potentially fascinating villains that have never been explored / can be reinvented for the real world.
The Pfieffer version was camp as hell Sheridan, what happened to your ‘no pantomime’ rule? Jack Sparrow is a no-no, but Pfieffer’s Catwoman is okay?!
Joel Schumacher’s version of Catwoman would have been over the top camp, Pfieffer’s Catwoman was absolutely fine. It’s a good performance.

I don’t mind the Jack Sparrow character, it’s the movie around him that gets boring.
Good god the villain better not be Catwoman.
In other news, Rachel Weisz is a phenomenal actress.
In other other news, they should cast Jess Weixler as Harley Quinn.
If Harley Quinn is in it will hurt people.
i think that it will be catwoman/tahlia al gul & vicki vale for the females, & for the males it will be black mask & maybe hugo strange.
i think it is good because it it very scary and very sad
i think it need to be even more scary ???????????????????
I read a while back that Emily Blunt was in the running for a role. She’d work well with Nolan.
Rachel Weisz would be an amazing addition to The Dark Knight Rises.
Rebecca De Mornay to play Poison Ivy, or Juliet Landau to play Talia al Ghul or Nyssa Raatko
