Comedy Movies 2011 – Guide

New: Top 20 Best Comedy Movies, 2011 (List) Let’s take a look at the biggest and best comedy movies of 2011. Funny this year comes in the form of The Hangover 2, Jonah Hill as a babysitter, Simon Pegg befriending a mooning alien, Cameron Diaz as the worst teacher ever, and Adam Sandler playing his own sister. That and so much more.

- JANUARY -

The Dilemma
Out: 14 January 2011
Director: Ron Howard
Starring: Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly

Best Comedy Movies 2011
A man (Vaughn) discovers that his best friend’s wife (Ryder) is having an affair. But should he tell him? Kevin James plays the best friend, Channing Tatum is the other man. Ouch, this one looks painful. A laugh-free trailer (that also managed to upset gay rights groups) and, well, it’s just not a scenario that works for comedy. Director Ron Howard looks like he’s out of his genre. [Critics (via Rotten Tomatoes): 24%] [Public (via IMDB): 5.2] = {Ranked: 5th Worst Of The Year}

- FEBRUARY -

Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son
Out: 18 February 2011
Director: John Whitesell
Starring: Martin Lawrence, Brandon T. Jackson, Max Casella

Top 20 Best Comedy Movie, 2011
The trilogy is complete. Martin Lawrence returns as the FBI agent, going undercover in an all girl’s school when his 17 year old stepson (T. Jackson, who looks 26, because he is) witnesses a homicide. His stepson joins him in drag, as the pair try to find evidence incriminating the perp. Dancing on the tables, shouting “Haaay”, playing twister – the inconspicuous nature of undercover work seems to have been overlooked here. The director of Malibu’s Most Wanted, Big Momma’s House 2 and Deck The Halls (how’s that for a cv) is back. [Critics: 5%] [Public: 3.7] = {Ranked: 3rd Worst}

Hall Pass
Out: 25 February 2011
Directors: Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly
Starring: Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Jenna Fischer, Richard Jenkins

Best Comedy Films 2011
Two best friends (Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis) are restless in their long marriages so their wives decide to grant them a “hall pass,” one week of freedom to do whatever they want… no questions asked. At first it sounds like a dream come true but they soon realise their expectations of the single life are completely out of sync with reality. The movie’s directors, the Farrelly Brothers, aren’t what they used to be, but this seems like a solid premise. Can’t help feeling they could have cast a stronger pair of actors as the leads. Doubt they were the first choices and it’ll mean it’s not as big of a hit as it could have been. [Critics: 35%] [Public: 6/10] = {Ranked: 15th Best}

- MARCH -

Take Me Home Tonight
Out: 4 March 2011
Director: Michael Dowse
Starring: Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Audrina Patridge, Dan Fogler

Top Comedy Movies 2011
Dramedy about the adventures of a recent college graduate (Topher Grace), his twin sister (Anna Faris), and his best friend (Dan Fogler) as they decide what they should do with their lives. The grad also pursues his dream girl (Teresa Palmer) at a wild Labor Day party in 1988 by telling her that he works for Goldman Sachs. Topher Grace’s most prominent roles on screen have been psychos (‘Spider-Man 3′, ‘Predators’), but here he’s returning to his comic roots. He made his name on ‘That 70s Show’, which was also retro comedy. The trailer is pretty charming and fun, though the movie’s release has been delayed A LOT which rarely bodes well (shooting began in Feb 2007). [Critics: 28%] [Public: 6.4/10] = {Ranked: 16th Best}

Paul
Out: 18 March 2011
Director: Greg Mottola
Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Seth Rogen (voice), Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig

2011 Comedy Movies List
Two British sci-fi geeks (Pegg and Frost) go on a road trip through America. On the way, they discover an escaped alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) near Area 51. As they try to reunite him with his mother ship, they find ‘Paul’ has many more opinions than your typical ET. After previous collaborations you might expect Edgar Wright to be directing this, but instead it’s Greg Mottola (‘Superbad’, ‘Adventureland’). Expect something more mainstream, with a little less visual flair. The alien visual effects look great. Nick Frost deserves to be an international megastar. [Critics: 72%] [Public: 7.1] = {Ranked: 6th Best}

- APRIL -

Your Highness
Out: 8 April 2011
Director: David Gordon Green
Starring: Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel

Latest Comedy Movies 2011
Danny McBride, James Franco and director David Gordon Green all reunite from Pineapple Express to tell this story of a lazy medieval prince (McBride) who smokes wizard’s weed (hence ‘Your Highness’) until he’s forced to complete a quest to save his father’s kingdom. There are big creature fx. Shades of ‘Princess Bride’. Strange to see Danny McBride getting higher billing than James Franco, might be because he wrote it? Looks fun. [Critics: 26%] [Public: 5.6/10] = {Ranked: 7th Worst}

    I liked Crazy Stupid Love, Bridesmades and Hall Pass. As the 4th best I would say Paul and Horrible Bosses.
    I didn´t really liked Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, it was not much, Bad Teacher was a so-so.

      The best and worst list comes from combining the critics and public’s average grades. Unfortunately neither liked it much. But comedy movies are more subjective than any other genre, there are several I find hilarious (Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, Orgazmo, etc.) that are supposed to be pretty bad.

    How do you put some of the movies in the best category when they aren’t even really all that great like Attack the Block? Plus as I recall Zookeep, Your Highness,The Change-Up, and a few others are some of the best comedies out there, yet you stuck them in the worst category. Are you blind, stupid, or just have no sense of freaking comedy. If it’s all of the above. Then you shouldn’t call yourself a critique or a fan of comedy. You gotta be open to all comedy. Some dumber then others as I will admit, but hell that’s what makes them funny.

      All I’ve done is combined the critics’ votes (through Rotten Tomatoes) with the public’s votes (through IMDB). The ranking is based on that, not my own opinion. Unfortunately both critics and audiences, on average, did not like Your Highness, nor Zookeeper. While the public generally thought The Change-Up was o-k-, critics really disliked it a lot which meant it (narrowly) slipped onto the worst list. Attack The Block has had a very broad range of reaction but the majority is positive.

    I was hesitant to watch Bridesmaid, at first. I have to admit that it was very funny. I see a lot of people are talking about Hangover 2. It was good. Not great. The first one was a lot better…and in my humble opinion, Bridesmaid is better than Hangover 2. :)

    Hangover part 2 is basically the same as part one… instead of a baby theres a monkey… the same guy goes missing… and it just seems like a bad version of the first one to me. If you want a kick ass movie pick JUST GO WITH IT!!!

    No idea why arthur’s in the worst of section, I loved Brand’s acting and I thought the remake was actually really good. That and Paul would have to be my two tops.

      The rankings are decided purely by combining the critics’ and users’ grades from Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. I’m afraid Arthur didn’t do too well with either.
