Comedy Movies 2011 – Guide

- JULY -

Zookeeper
Starring: Kevin James, Rosario Dawson, Sly Stallone (voice), Adam Sandler (voice)
Director: Frank Coraci
Release Date: 1st July 2011

comedy-2011-movies-the-zookeeper.jpg
Zoo animals break their code of silence to help their zookeeper (Kevin James) win back the woman of his dreams. Teaching him their methods of dating and mating will be Sylvester Stallone as a lion, Adam Sandler as a monkey, Jon Favreau as a bear, Cher as a giraffe, and Judd Apatow (?!) as an elephant. From the director behind The Wedding Singer, Click and The Waterboy. Sounds fun, sort of, wish it wasn’t Kevin James in the lead.
[Critics - 14%] [Public - 4.4/10] = {Ranked: 4th Worst}

Horrible Bosses
Starring: Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, Jennifer Aniston
Director: Seth Gordon
Release Date: 29th July 2011

comedy-2011-movies-horrible-bosses.jpg
Three friends (Bateman, Sudeikis, Day) conspire to murder their awful bosses (Aniston, Spacey, Colin Farrell) when they realise they are standing in the way of their happiness. To do this they enlist the help of a ‘murder consultant’ in a bar called Motherfu*ker Jones (Jamie Foxx). Hollywood doesn’t tend to do well at ‘let’s bump someone off’ comedy because it’s inherently a dark concept, but the cast is good and the script is reportedly strong. The director made the much-loved documentary King Of Kong.
[Critics - 69%] [Public - 7.1/10] = {Ranked: 8th Best}

Attack The Block
Starring: John Boyega, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Jodie Whittaker, Nick Frost
Director: Joe Cornish
Release Date: 29th July 2011

[Critics - 90%] [Public - 6.7/10] = {Ranked: 3rd Best}

Crazy, Stupid, Love
Starring: Steve Carell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Analeigh Tipton
Directors: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Release Date: 29nd July 2011

Best New Comedy Movies 2011
A happily married family man (Carell) is shocked when his wife (Moore) asks for a divorce. Now he’s trying to manage the relationship with his kids and finds himself thrust back onto the dating scene, where he finds himself so deeply uncool he has to enlist the help of a stylish life coach (Gosling). The directors of I Love You Phillip Morris (who wrote Bad Santa before that) should bring something subversive and entertaining to the marital crisis material.
[Critics - 78%] [Public - 7.5/10] = {Ranked: 4th Best}

- AUGUST -

The Change-Up
Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman, Olivia Wilde, Leslie Mann, Alan Arkin
Director: David Dobkin
Release Date: 5th August 2011

comedy-2011-movies-the-change-up.jpg
A married guy (Bateman) switches bodies with his best friend (Reynolds) in order to woo his co-worker. It’s not clear yet how he does this. There’s also some connection to baseball as they’ve been filming at a stadium and a ‘changeup’ is a type of pitch in baseball. Director David Dobkin made Wedding Crashers, then came a bit unstuck with Fred Claus. Body swap comedies always seem so… done. You either like Ryan Reynolds, or you don’t.
[Critics - 24%] [Public - 6.5/10] = {Ranked: 9th Worst}

    I liked Crazy Stupid Love, Bridesmades and Hall Pass. As the 4th best I would say Paul and Horrible Bosses.
    I didn´t really liked Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, it was not much, Bad Teacher was a so-so.

    I see a lot of the these are in the worst of list at the end. I was losing faith in humanity for a while there.

      The best and worst list comes from combining the critics and public’s average grades. Unfortunately neither liked it much. But comedy movies are more subjective than any other genre, there are several I find hilarious (Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, Orgazmo, etc.) that are supposed to be pretty bad.

    How do you put some of the movies in the best category when they aren’t even really all that great like Attack the Block? Plus as I recall Zookeep, Your Highness,The Change-Up, and a few others are some of the best comedies out there, yet you stuck them in the worst category. Are you blind, stupid, or just have no sense of freaking comedy. If it’s all of the above. Then you shouldn’t call yourself a critique or a fan of comedy. You gotta be open to all comedy. Some dumber then others as I will admit, but hell that’s what makes them funny.

      All I’ve done is combined the critics’ votes (through Rotten Tomatoes) with the public’s votes (through IMDB). The ranking is based on that, not my own opinion. Unfortunately both critics and audiences, on average, did not like Your Highness, nor Zookeeper. While the public generally thought The Change-Up was o-k-, critics really disliked it a lot which meant it (narrowly) slipped onto the worst list. Attack The Block has had a very broad range of reaction but the majority is positive.

    I was hesitant to watch Bridesmaid, at first. I have to admit that it was very funny. I see a lot of people are talking about Hangover 2. It was good. Not great. The first one was a lot better…and in my humble opinion, Bridesmaid is better than Hangover 2. :)

    Hangover part 2 is basically the same as part one… instead of a baby theres a monkey… the same guy goes missing… and it just seems like a bad version of the first one to me. If you want a kick ass movie pick JUST GO WITH IT!!!

    No idea why arthur’s in the worst of section, I loved Brand’s acting and I thought the remake was actually really good. That and Paul would have to be my two tops.

      The rankings are decided purely by combining the critics’ and users’ grades from Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB. I’m afraid Arthur didn’t do too well with either.
