Comedy Movies 2011 – Guide

30 Minutes Or Less
Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson, Aziz Ansari
Director: Ruben Fleischer
Release Date: 12th August 2011

The director of Zombieland reunites with Jesse Eisenberg for this adventure-comedy about a small town pizza delivery guy who’s kidnapped by two wannabe criminal masterminds (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) and forced to rob a bank, in 30 minutes or less. Enlisting the help of his ex-best friend (Aziz Ansari), he must deal with police, hired assassins, flamethrowers, and their tumultuous friendship, as the clock ticks down. The stage is set for a Pineapple Express-style madcap comedy. But it all sounds worrying close to this real life incident.

- SEPTEMBER -

Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star
Starring: Nick Swardson, Christina Ricci, Stephen Dorff, Don Johnson
Director: Tom Brady (‘The Comebacks’, ‘The Hot Chick’)
Release Date: 9th September 2011

best-comedy-movies-2011
Adam Sandler co-wrote this comedy about a small town grocery bagger (Nick Swardson) who discovers his conservative parents were once adult film stars. Armed with the belief that he has found his destiny, he heads out to LA, looking to make a splash in the biz. Once they are done laughing at him, they discover he just may have something to offer. I like a good porno comedy (see: Orgazmo), but the Sandler creative team behind this will probably be tempted to go too crude and obvious. Expect it’ll be for fans of Sandler-style humour only.

- OCTOBER -

The Big Year
Director: David Frankel
Starring: Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Steve Martin, Rosamund Pike, Anjelica Huston
Release Date: 14th October 2011

Best Comedy Movies 2011
Three avid bird watchers compete to spot the rarest birds in North America at a prestigious annual event. The premise is amusing and the lead trio of Wilson, Black and Martin is quite appealing. They’ve all been guilty of phoning it in in recent years, but hopefully putting them together will create a competitive energy. The director of Marley & Me and The Devil Wears Prada doesn’t have any direct comedy experience, and is unlikely to play this heavily for the slapstick you might expect.

Johnny English Reborn
Starring: Rowan Atkinson, Gillian Anderson, Rosamund Pike, Dominic West
Director: Oliver Parker
Release Date: 28th October 2011

Best Comedy Movies 2011
In the sequel to the 2003 action comedy, Johnny English returns from his ‘off the grid’ status to try and stop a plot by a group of international assassins to whack the Chinese premier and cause world chaos. Is there demand for a sequel? As much as there was for Nanny McPhee 2… This is from the writer of the terrible Mr. Bean’s Holiday and the director of St Trinian’s 1 and 2, but it still looks like a slight improvement on the first.
[Critics - 38%] [Public - 6.6/10] = {Ranked: 13th Best}

- NOVEMBER -

Tower Heist
Starring: Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Matthew Broderick, Casey Affleck, Téa Leoni
Director: Brett Ratner
Release Date: 4th November 2011

Best Comedy Movies 2011
When a group of hard working guys find out they’ve fallen victim to a wealthy businessman’s Ponzi scheme, they conspire to rob his high-rise residence. This is obviously inspired by the real life Bernard Madoff scam. The movie was developed as an “African American Ocean’s Eleven” until Ben Stiller took the lead. Nice to see Eddie Murphy returning to an action-comedy that’s not for the kiddies. Brett Ratner directs.

It’s a sci-fi comedy horror, set in a British council estate where aliens have landed and a local ‘gang’ of youths have to fend them off. It’s had great reviews.
