Romantic Movies 2011 – Guide

New: Top 20 Best Romantic Movies - 2011 (List) Will you find romance in 2011? If it’s at the movies, then yes.

We’re looking at the biggest and best romantic movies of 2011, whether it’s about pure love or romantic-comedy.

- JANUARY -

No Strings Attached
Released: 21 January 2011 (U.S. Dates)
Director: Ivan Reitman
Starring: Ashton Kutcher, Natalie Portman, Cary Elwes, Olivia Thirlby

Best Romantic Movies 2011 / Romance
Young people these days are quicker to jump into bed than they are to date. A guy (Kutcher) and girl (Portman) try to keep their relationship strictly physical, but it’s not long before they learn that they want something more. This sort of generic movie premise is a step down for Portman, but business as usual for Kutcher. The director is Ivan Reitman, whose last three movies were ‘My Super Ex-Girlfriend’, ‘Evolution’ and ‘Six Days Seven Nights’. [Critics (via Rotten Tomatoes): 49%] [Public (via IMDB): 6.1]

- FEBRUARY -

Just Go With It
Released: 11 February 2011
Director: Denis Dugan
Starring: Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston, Brooklyn Decker, Nicole Kidman

Top 20 Best Romantic Movie, 2011
A plastic surgeon (Sandler (really?)), romancing a much younger schoolteacher (Decker), enlists his loyal assistant (Aniston) to pretend to be his soon to be ex-wife, in order to cover up a careless lie. When more lies backfire, the assistant’s kids become involved, and everyone heads off for a weekend in Hawaii that will change all their lives. This is a remake of a Bollywood film. Nicole Kidman is fourth on the cast list and not even in the trailer – her career is on the skids. Expect the usual Sandler romantic-comedy shenanigans, and if he doesn’t end up with Aniston I’ll eat my hat. [Critics: 19%] [Public: 6.3]

- MARCH -

The Adjustment Bureau
Released: 4 March 2011
Director: George Nolfi
Starring: Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Terence Stamp, John Slattery

Best Romantic Films 2011 / Love Movies
Sci-fi romance about a smooth-talking congressman (Damon) who seems destined for national political stardom. When he meets a beautiful ballet dancer (Blunt) he discovers there is a force determined to keep them from becoming involved. Fate says they were never supposed to have met and mysterious old men in hats act as cockblockers. The movie’s first time director wrote The Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean’s 12. Damon and Blunt are both sharp actors so they should be able to craft something thoughtful, let’s hope the chemistry is there – this is the second romantic lead of Damon’s career, after the poorly received All The Pretty Horses. Also, this doesn’t have the sexiest title in the world. [Critics: 73%] [Public: 7.0]

Red Riding Hood
Released: 11 March 2011
Director: Catherine Hardwicke
Starring: Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Shiloh Fernandez, Max Irons

Best Romantic Movies 2011 / Romance
Romantic-gothic-horror take on the legend of Red Riding Hood. A young woman (Seyfried) is in love with a brooding outsider (Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry a wealthy suitor (Irons). She’s planning to run away with him when she learns her older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the forest surrounding their village. As the death toll rises with each moon, she begins to suspect that the wolf could be someone close to her. From the director of Twilight, expect this to have a harder edge. [Critics: 11%] [Public: 5.2]

Jane Eyre
Released: 11 March 2011
Director: Cary Fukunaga
Starring: Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bell, Judi Dench

Top Romantic Movies 2011
After a bleak childhood, Jane Eyre (Wasikowska, ‘Alice In Wonderland’) goes out into the world to become a governess. In her new position at Thornfield Hall, she meets the cold master of the house, Mr. Rochester (Fassbender). Jane and her employer grow close, but could Mr. Rochester’s terrible secret be about to destroy their happiness forever? From the U.S. director of acclaimed South American poverty film ‘Sin Nombre’. The trailer tries to make this look like ‘The Others’ or something, which is misleading. [Critics: 85%] [Public: 7.3]

Romantic films are normally so predictable that it is a pain to watch them. So many try to be funny and fail so badly.
I like the sound of a “female Hangover”. The one with Chris Evans has some comedy potential too.

I recently saw a good French rom-com called “Hors de Prix” (Priceless) which was a pretty decent romantic film if people are looking for a good rental now.

Even the best romantic movies are very predictable so it’s about the journey rather than the surprise of the destination. Charm and humour are difficult things to capture so many do turn into ordeals (at least from a guy’s perspective).

I am looking forward to Bridesmaids the most, then Red Riding Hood, What’s Your Number and This Means War.

I think one of my favourites is leap year. I think that the movie was very scenic in terms of a romantic setting with lots of landscapes/flowers

what you mean in terms of romantic, more love scenes, people are usually looking for close relationship between man and woman and learn to implement tactics in their real life

Oh yes, let’s bash the romantic comedies because they’re “rubbish,” “predictable,” “boring,” etc. etc. So what do you guys watch? Horrible, predictable, sexist action movies. But hey, they’re coooool looking. I hate hypocrates.

I love romantic movies, it’s like seeing yourself into the shoes of lady falling head over heels to their one true love. Every woman dreamt of a real prince charming. So, some are contented just viewing over and over the romantic movies they watch as they experience love for the first time….

If you’re looking for a better class of rom-com (or what I like to call a drom-com) try “Cyrus” or “The Kids are All Right”. Watched them recently on DVD. Both very good but in different ways.

If a film is marketed purely as a romance then it is probably not a romance, but a fomula film. Films like “An Education” and “I Love You, New York” are romantic because there is a story the audience can fall for. They don’t need formula because the filmmakers were telling stories. Why don’t you write an article about films you find romantic instead of blockbusters?

It’s difficult to find a good romantic comedy that keeps you guessing and wanting more until the very end.I love one that has me blushing, smiling and laughing the entire time.
