Romantic Movies 2011 – Guide

Beastly
Released: 18 March 2011
Director: Daniel Barnz
Starring: Vanessa Hudgens, Alex Pettyfer, Mary Kate Olsen, Neil Patrick Harris

Best Love Movies 2011
A retelling of Beauty and the Beast set in New York which focuses on a handsome man with an evil streak (Pettyfer), who disrespects a witch in his class (Mary-Kate Olson, naturally) and is transformed into a grotesque monster. Can he be a better person and find true love with a new girl (Hudgens)? It’s based on this book, which has a beast of the hairy variety. The movie make-up is pretty revolting – Not sure I’d want to look at open wounds for 90 minutes. [Critics: 20%] [Public: 5.3]

- APRIL -

Water For Elephants
Released: 15 April 2011
Director: Francis Lawrence
Starring: Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz

Best Romance Movies 2011
A veterinary student (Pattinson) is put in charge of the animals at a circus during the Great Depression. Among them is an un-trainable elephant, who’s the great hope for the third-rate travelling show. Soon he falls for a former circus performer turned horse trainer (Witherspoon), who’s married to the charismatic and twisted animal trainer (Waltz). This is based on the beloved novel and comes from the director of I Am Legend and Constantine. To put the age difference of the romantic leads in perspective, Pattinson was cast as Witherspoon’s son in 2004′s Vanity Fair. [Critics: 61%] [Public: 6.9]

Prom
Released: 29 April 2011
Director: Joe Nussbaum
Starring: Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell, Yin Chang, De’Vaughn Nixon

Best Romantic Movies Of 2011
Intersecting stories unfold at one high school as the big dance approaches; For Nova (Teegarden), it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy who gets in the way of her perfect prom (McDonell). Fellow seniors (Chang and Nixon) harbour secrets, while others face all the insecurity and anticipation that surrounds one of high school’s most seminal events. From the director of American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile and the Amanda Bynes-starrer Sydney White. The cast are all unknowns. Expect harmless teen fluff that’s a long way short of John Hughes, and a nagging feeling that this would have worked better as a documentary. [Critics: 33%] [Public: 4.9]

- MAY -

Last Night
Released: 6 May 2011
Director: Massy Tadjedin
Starring: Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes, Guillaume Canet

Romance Movies For 2011
Romantic drama about a happily married couple (Knightley & Worthington) who are each tempted to stray, as the husband travels on a business trip with a desirable colleague (Mendes) and the wife encounters her past love at home (Canet, from Tell No One). The director is a newcomer. Since every character is involved in cheating, or thinking strongly about it, it’s probably not a good one to take a partner to if you have trust issues. It’ll be a thoughtful movie, but the trailer sure was depressing. [Critics: 51%] [Public: 6.5]

Something Borrowed
Released: 9 May 2011
Director: Luke Greenfield
Starring: Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, Colin Egglesfield, John Krasinski

Best Romantic-Comedy Movies 2011
Romantic comedy about an unhappily-still-single good girl attorney (Goodwin), who gets drunk and ends up sleeping with her best friend’s fiancé. What’s to happen when lifelong friendship collides with true love? All mixed in with the pressure of still being single in your 30s? I’ve noticed while writing this list just how many romantic movies are novel adaptations, far more than any other genre. This is based on Emily Giffin’s book of the same name. In real life any woman who did this would not be a friend, but no doubt this will have some elaborately convenient plot twist to justify what she did (e.g. her friend was also cheating etc). Romantic films are normally so predictable that it is a pain to watch them. So many try to be funny and fail so badly.
I like the sound of a “female Hangover”. The one with Chris Evans has some comedy potential too.

I recently saw a good French rom-com called “Hors de Prix” (Priceless) which was a pretty decent romantic film if people are looking for a good rental now.

Even the best romantic movies are very predictable so it’s about the journey rather than the surprise of the destination. Charm and humour are difficult things to capture so many do turn into ordeals (at least from a guy’s perspective).

I am looking forward to Bridesmaids the most, then Red Riding Hood, What’s Your Number and This Means War.

I think one of my favourites is leap year. I think that the movie was very scenic in terms of a romantic setting with lots of landscapes/flowers

Oh yes, let’s bash the romantic comedies because they’re “rubbish,” “predictable,” “boring,” etc. etc. So what do you guys watch? Horrible, predictable, sexist action movies. But hey, they’re coooool looking. I hate hypocrates.

I love romantic movies, it’s like seeing yourself into the shoes of lady falling head over heels to their one true love. Every woman dreamt of a real prince charming. So, some are contented just viewing over and over the romantic movies they watch as they experience love for the first time….

If you’re looking for a better class of rom-com (or what I like to call a drom-com) try “Cyrus” or “The Kids are All Right”. Watched them recently on DVD. Both very good but in different ways.

If a film is marketed purely as a romance then it is probably not a romance, but a fomula film. Films like “An Education” and “I Love You, New York” are romantic because there is a story the audience can fall for. They don’t need formula because the filmmakers were telling stories. Why don’t you write an article about films you find romantic instead of blockbusters?

It’s difficult to find a good romantic comedy that keeps you guessing and wanting more until the very end.I love one that has me blushing, smiling and laughing the entire time.
