Romantic Movies 2011 – Guide
14.01.11 # Romantic Movies # 45 CommentsBeastly
Released: 18 March 2011
Director: Daniel Barnz
Starring: Vanessa Hudgens, Alex Pettyfer, Mary Kate Olsen, Neil Patrick Harris

A retelling of Beauty and the Beast set in New York which focuses on a handsome man with an evil streak (Pettyfer), who disrespects a witch in his class (Mary-Kate Olson, naturally) and is transformed into a grotesque monster. Can he be a better person and find true love with a new girl (Hudgens)? It’s based on this book, which has a beast of the hairy variety. The movie make-up is pretty revolting – Not sure I’d want to look at open wounds for 90 minutes. [Critics: 20%] [Public: 5.3]
Water For Elephants
Released: 15 April 2011
Director: Francis Lawrence
Starring: Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz

A veterinary student (Pattinson) is put in charge of the animals at a circus during the Great Depression. Among them is an un-trainable elephant, who’s the great hope for the third-rate travelling show. Soon he falls for a former circus performer turned horse trainer (Witherspoon), who’s married to the charismatic and twisted animal trainer (Waltz). This is based on the beloved novel and comes from the director of I Am Legend and Constantine. To put the age difference of the romantic leads in perspective, Pattinson was cast as Witherspoon’s son in 2004′s Vanity Fair. [Critics: 61%] [Public: 6.9]
Prom
Released: 29 April 2011
Director: Joe Nussbaum
Starring: Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell, Yin Chang, De’Vaughn Nixon

Intersecting stories unfold at one high school as the big dance approaches; For Nova (Teegarden), it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy who gets in the way of her perfect prom (McDonell). Fellow seniors (Chang and Nixon) harbour secrets, while others face all the insecurity and anticipation that surrounds one of high school’s most seminal events. From the director of American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile and the Amanda Bynes-starrer Sydney White. The cast are all unknowns. Expect harmless teen fluff that’s a long way short of John Hughes, and a nagging feeling that this would have worked better as a documentary. [Critics: 33%] [Public: 4.9]
Last Night
Released: 6 May 2011
Director: Massy Tadjedin
Starring: Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes, Guillaume Canet

Romantic drama about a happily married couple (Knightley & Worthington) who are each tempted to stray, as the husband travels on a business trip with a desirable colleague (Mendes) and the wife encounters her past love at home (Canet, from Tell No One). The director is a newcomer. Since every character is involved in cheating, or thinking strongly about it, it’s probably not a good one to take a partner to if you have trust issues. It’ll be a thoughtful movie, but the trailer sure was depressing. [Critics: 51%] [Public: 6.5]
Something Borrowed
Released: 9 May 2011
Director: Luke Greenfield
Starring: Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, Colin Egglesfield, John Krasinski

Romantic comedy about an unhappily-still-single good girl attorney (Goodwin), who gets drunk and ends up sleeping with her best friend’s fiancé. What’s to happen when lifelong friendship collides with true love? All mixed in with the pressure of still being single in your 30s? I’ve noticed while writing this list just how many romantic movies are novel adaptations, far more than any other genre. This is based on Emily Giffin’s book of the same name. In real life any woman who did this would not be a friend, but no doubt this will have some elaborately convenient plot twist to justify what she did (e.g. her friend was also cheating etc). One Day sounds like a potential remake of Same Time Next Year from 1978 starring Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn.
Hey, romantic movies are so lovely. You’re looking for a rom.mov, i would recommand you ” No strings attached” It’s great!
i just so loved friends with benefits! nice movie..indeed!
L.O.L. will be the remake of a French movie not a Belgian one, I don’t know where you got that but I guess you americans can’t see the difference… nor understand it…
I’m British. That probably makes it worse. The imdb page says it’s Belgian, I had no reason not to believe it.
If asked why I love her I would say
It’s the sway in her hips,
the thickness in her thighs.
It’s the lust in her lips,
the love in her eyes.
… It’s the softness of her skin,
the silk in her hair.
It’s the twist in her walk;
it’s the sweetness in her talk.
It’s the way she loves me
that makes me love her each day.
That is what I would say”-zulker…
Love Flims Are Great <3
Romantic comedies fill us with a certain bubbly feeling that we, often, try to overlook; they display love and wonder in ways that a drama cannot. Love does not always have to be so serious, we should laugh in love. These are by far my favorite type of film. I just wish it were that easy.
Hello all,
Im a 16 year old teenger who loves this genre of film, what films would u reccomend me?
Thanks
From 2011 I think you would enjoy Footloose, and the Twilight Saga. Crazy, Stupid, Love is very good but watch the trailer on YouTube first to see what you think. Come back and let us know what you thought.
I’m a 22-yr-old girl and I really love romantic comedies, so i try to watch as many as I can. This is what I thought of the movies I saw on this list…
Which ones were really good?
1. Bridesmaids was really funny but more of a comedy with romance thrown in than a romantic comedy per se – still it’s definitely worth watching for the humor.
2. Crazy, Stupid Love was really great, I thought. I didn’t expect it to be, but it certainly surprised me. It had a deeper, more real, touching, and sincere message than most romantic comedies do. Plus the plot twist towards the end actually caught me by surprise, which is so rare in romantic comedies that it was refreshing and that alone made it a memorable movie.
3. New Year’s Eve was absolutely awesome – romantic, beautiful, funny, powerful, inspirational… It so wonderfully captured the essence of what New Year’s Eve is all about – in fact I’m not sure I’d even label it a romantic comedy because the main overall point of the story wasn’t romance tho it had some great romantic story-lines. It made me sigh, laugh AND cry, which to me is the mark of a great movie. It had a great cast of famous lovable actors and actresses but made up for the giant flop that ended up being Valentine’s Day.
4. This Means War – great balance of action, comedy, romance, drama and mystery… what’s not to like? Two hot guys with somewhat opposite personalities both competing for the same woman – oh and they’re also spies who are closer than brothers. the story-line speaks for itself. Plus both the characters and actors are so lovable that you yourself are torn between the two men the whole movie – so much so that i was afraid i would end up hating the ending because no matter who she chose, i would just be left feeling bad for the other guy. this almost was the case, too, but the comedy made me forget that the ending was so annoyingly convenient… but overall it was definitely a good, entertaining watch that can lead to interesting after-movie debates about which guy was hotter and which one YOU would have chosen.
2011, though, also had some of the WORST romantic comedies I’ve seen. DO NOT waste your time with these sad excuses for movies:
1. Something Borrowed: great cast, TERRIBLE movie. that simple. I didn’t read the book this movie was based on so i don’t know if the original story was just as terrible but this movie was NOT at ALL romantic, it made no sense, and all the characters were deplorable except the funny character played by John Krasinski. He wasn’t enough to save the movie, tho. if anything, this movie just makes you mad and insults all your morals. Neither the story nor the characters are believable. I could go on and on but I think you get the gist.
2. Friends with Benefits: I will put this simply – unless if you just happen to be enough of a fan of Justin Timberlake and/or Mila Kunis to watch an entire movie of them half naked and having sex in various ways and positions, this movie sux. My friend is a JT fan so she loved it, but let’s be honest JT has never been much of an actor. this movie was just a weirder, less romantic and generally worse version of No Strings Attached (which wasn’t exactly exceptional to begin with) and with far less substance, meaning and humor. It seemed to me like more of the movie consisted of watching those 2 have sex and banter with each other than actually making any sort of point.
(personally, I also don’t get the whole twilight obsession but that’s just me…)
why are ppl on here complaining about romantic comedies if you dont like them then why are you even here looking and posting comments
Friends with Benefits is a good movie , yes i obvious but still its a very good journey to the end
I was wondering what all of you thought was better no strings attached or friends with benefits , since they are both the same ,please comment and like .
MILA KUNIS , SUCH A RIDE
As I said before, I thought No Strings Attached was definitely better (tho not a great movie anyway). I hated Friends with Benefits, and I dont see y anyone wud like it unless they just happened to be enough fans of either Justin Timberlake and/or Mila Kunis to sustain them throughout a rather terrible film… and I’m not.
what’s your number ;D hilarious
wow..this is sweet. is it yours or quoted from a movie?
‘ One day ‘ is the best romantic movie ever !!!!!
LOL : Miley Cyrus version is better than the first one one ,but it works a bit better with teens .FOr me,other were a little bit too predictible and borring .You should definitely see ‘ Remember me ‘.The ‘ Dark Knight Rises ‘.It can suprise you .The end is always the best .
