Romantic Movies 2011 – Guide

Bridesmaids
Released: 13 May 2011
Director: Paul Feig
Starring: Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph, Jon Hamm

Top 10 Romantic Movies Of 2011
Two feuding bridesmaids (Rose Byrne & Kristen Wiig) battle over how to plan their friend’s wedding. Unlike Bride Wars, this won’t get sappy or particularly girly. Early reviews are very enthusiastic, comparing it to a female The Hangover. Is it romantic? Well it’s really a comedy set in the world of a wedding. Produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Paul Feig, who last worked together on Freaks And Geeks. Kristin Wiig is one of the best comedy actresses around, she co-wrote this, and it should be her highest profile movie role to date. [Critics: 90%] [Public: 6.9]

Friends With Benefits
Released: 22 July 2011
Director: Will Gluck
Starring: Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone

Upcoming 2011 Romantic Movies
A female headhunter (Kunis) convinces a potential recruit (Timberlake) to take a job in New York. Rather than get into a romantic relationship they don’t have time for, both decide to have an ongoing arrangement that is strictly physical. Guess how it turns out folks. This is so similar to January’s No Strings Attached that the two movies even had the same title until recently. Overall this looks slightly better. It has a stronger supporting cast, and the characters are aware of romantic-comedy conventions in a Scream kinda way. Although this will probably just come off as a bit smug. From the director of Easy A. [Critics: 71%] [Public: 6.6]

Crazy, Stupid, Love.
Released: 29 July 2011
Directors: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa
Starring: Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone

A happily married family man (Carell) is shocked when his wife (Moore) asks for a divorce. Now he’s trying to manage the relationship with his kids while finding himself thrust back onto the dating scene. When he realises he’s too deeply uncool to pick up women he enlists the help of a stylish life coach (Gosling). The directors of ‘I Love You Phillip Morris’ (who wrote ‘Bad Santa’ before that) are likely to bring something wonderfully subversive and entertaining to the ‘marital crisis’ sub-genre. Expect the honesty of a good indie movie with the appealing gloss of a Hollywood picture. [Critics: 78%] [Public: 7.5]

Romantic films are normally so predictable that it is a pain to watch them. So many try to be funny and fail so badly.
I like the sound of a “female Hangover”. The one with Chris Evans has some comedy potential too.

I recently saw a good French rom-com called “Hors de Prix” (Priceless) which was a pretty decent romantic film if people are looking for a good rental now.

Even the best romantic movies are very predictable so it’s about the journey rather than the surprise of the destination. Charm and humour are difficult things to capture so many do turn into ordeals (at least from a guy’s perspective).

I am looking forward to Bridesmaids the most, then Red Riding Hood, What’s Your Number and This Means War.

I think one of my favourites is leap year. I think that the movie was very scenic in terms of a romantic setting with lots of landscapes/flowers

Oh yes, let’s bash the romantic comedies because they’re “rubbish,” “predictable,” “boring,” etc. etc. So what do you guys watch? Horrible, predictable, sexist action movies. But hey, they’re coooool looking. I hate hypocrates.

I love romantic movies, it’s like seeing yourself into the shoes of lady falling head over heels to their one true love. Every woman dreamt of a real prince charming. So, some are contented just viewing over and over the romantic movies they watch as they experience love for the first time….

If you’re looking for a better class of rom-com (or what I like to call a drom-com) try “Cyrus” or “The Kids are All Right”. Watched them recently on DVD. Both very good but in different ways.

If a film is marketed purely as a romance then it is probably not a romance, but a fomula film. Films like “An Education” and “I Love You, New York” are romantic because there is a story the audience can fall for. They don’t need formula because the filmmakers were telling stories. Why don’t you write an article about films you find romantic instead of blockbusters?

It’s difficult to find a good romantic comedy that keeps you guessing and wanting more until the very end.I love one that has me blushing, smiling and laughing the entire time.
