Romantic Movies 2011 – Guide
14.01.11 # Romantic Movies # 45 CommentsOne Day
Released: 19 August 2011
Director: Lone Scherfig
Starring: Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Patricia Clarkson

Romantic comedy about a couple who first meet during their graduation in 1988 and proceed to reunite one day each year for the next 20 years. Think When Harry Met Sally, but set in Scotland, England and France. This is from the director of the Oscar-nominated An Education, so expect a classy, well-observed production. Hathaway is going to have a Yorkshire accent, which’ll be odd. Guess what, it’s based on a novel. [Critics: 36%] [Public: 6.8]
What’s Your Number?
Released: 30 September 2011
Director: Mark Mylod
Starring: Anna Faris, Chris Evans, Ryan Phillippe, Zachary Quinto

Adaptation of Karyn Bosnak’s book 20 Times A Lady in which a young woman (Faris) realises she has had twice as many sexual partners as the national average, so swears off new guys and decides to go back and visit the previous twenty to find out if she overlooked anyone. And all with the aid of her womanizing next door neighbour (Evans). The exes include an inmate, a rehab patient, a dog-obsessed Amway salesman and a Muppeteer (Samburg, above). Fun cast, should be entertaining, even if it’s becoming a rather well-worn concept (see High Fidelity, Broken Flowers). [Critics: 23%] [Public: 5.8]
Footloose
Released: 14 October 2011
Director: Craig Brewer
Starring: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid, Andie MacDowell

A city kid moves to an old fashioned and uptight town where he rebels against its law that bans dancing and rock music. Soon he begins to fall for a rebellious girl, who has a boyfriend and an overprotective father (Quaid) who’s a man of the church and an authority figure in the town. This is a remake of the 1984 musical that made Kevin Bacon a star, rather than an adaptation of the stage musical that followed. This time the action has been moved from Texas to Tennessee, and will feature new songs. The director of Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan is a bit of an odd choice, though I suppose he knows southern grit. Both lead roles went to professional dancers, with few movie credits. The original is very much of its time, let’s hope this can spark more interest than Dirty Dancing 2. [Critics: 71%] [Public: 5.5]
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1
Released: 18 November 2011
Director: Bill Condon
Starring: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Ashley Greene

Bella and Edward get married and hop off to Brazil for their honeymoon, where they finally sleep together. Bella soon discovers she’s pregnant with their half-vampire child, something which threatens her life and provokes the wrath of both the wolf pack and the vampire elite. You’re either madly on board with this series or not. This is easily the trickiest book to adapt given the number of far-out ideas it contains. Part 2 is released a year later. The gaps between the movies are too long now, if they’re not careful the fad will fade. [Critics: 24%] [Public: 4.8]
New Year’s Eve
Released: 9 December 2011
Director: Garry Marshall
Starring: Jessica Biel, Ashton Kutcher, Robert De Niro, Zac Efron, Hilary Swank

Last year’s ensemble ‘Valentine’s Day’ was pretty dire, but if you don’t agree you’ll be excited by this sequel of sorts. It has the same director, the same vibe, but an all-new cast, with the exception of Biel and Kutcher who are playing new characters. This time it follows the lives of several couples and singles in New York, as they intertwine over the course of New Year’s Eve. One story has Biel as a pregnant woman trying to win a hospital cash prize offered to the first person to give birth on New Year’s Day. The movie wishes it was ‘Love Actually’. Romantic films are normally so predictable that it is a pain to watch them. So many try to be funny and fail so badly.
I like the sound of a “female Hangover”. The one with Chris Evans has some comedy potential too.
I recently saw a good French rom-com called “Hors de Prix” (Priceless) which was a pretty decent romantic film if people are looking for a good rental now.
Even the best romantic movies are very predictable so it’s about the journey rather than the surprise of the destination. Charm and humour are difficult things to capture so many do turn into ordeals (at least from a guy’s perspective).
I am looking forward to Bridesmaids the most, then Red Riding Hood, What’s Your Number and This Means War.
romantic movies are rubbish and sick…they make you feel longing for love and affection….comedy is the best….
I think one of my favourites is leap year. I think that the movie was very scenic in terms of a romantic setting with lots of landscapes/flowers
So are action movies.
Oh yes, let’s bash the romantic comedies because they’re “rubbish,” “predictable,” “boring,” etc. etc. So what do you guys watch? Horrible, predictable, sexist action movies. But hey, they’re coooool looking. I hate hypocrates.
u see ur a man romantic comedies are usually for women so u don’t understand how us women feel when we watch them….
The movie “Definatly, Maybe” was a pretty good movie. It was more of a… romance mystery? I thought it was very unpredictible.
i think the people who does romance films are sexy, hot, a babes
Heu there every one Let the world know, if there was ever love:
Mine for you”- Peter Winstanley
“My heart to you is given:
Oh, do give yours to me;
We’ll lock them up together,
And throw away the key
i do love romance movie and for overall movie the most exciting and could wait to see is “breaking dawn”…^_^

uhm. for me, love stories are incredible! they are just so awesome! they make lives colorful.. and they serve as a living truth that fairytales do come true and that happily ever after do exist.
i’ll never stop watchin love movies. ! ^.^
Footloose was made at my school! The guy is sooo sexy! I wactched from my class room! <3
I love romantic movies, it’s like seeing yourself into the shoes of lady falling head over heels to their one true love. Every woman dreamt of a real prince charming. So, some are contented just viewing over and over the romantic movies they watch as they experience love for the first time….
Hi… I am from Greece… Great job with all those movies… I just can’t wait to see Jane Eyre and of cource Breaking Dawn…
I would love to see a trailer of Breaking Dawn… <3
But it seems to be SO SO SO SO far away…
Oh… and about the Red Riding Hood… there is a rumour that it has similarities with the Twilight… I think no… Just in the begining at the scene of the woods… This is it… nothing more… It was a great movie to see…
ps. If any new romantic movies come out… I would love to see them posted here…
love to hear from amanda seyfried again…so so love her..i cant 4get her and tatum in >dear john.
If you’re looking for a better class of rom-com (or what I like to call a drom-com) try “Cyrus” or “The Kids are All Right”. Watched them recently on DVD. Both very good but in different ways.
Indeed, heard good things about both. To avoid confusion I should also say they’re from 2010.
well i think.. we watch movies to make our self heppy n to feel good…. Romantic movies are the best ones that makes u feel good n relaxed …. So i would say I LOVE LOVE STORIES….
The Last Song hit me
i feel that dear john was a very good romance. its just lovely.
Not from this year though.
If a film is marketed purely as a romance then it is probably not a romance, but a fomula film. Films like “An Education” and “I Love You, New York” are romantic because there is a story the audience can fall for. They don’t need formula because the filmmakers were telling stories. Why don’t you write an article about films you find romantic instead of blockbusters?
It’s difficult to find a good romantic comedy that keeps you guessing and wanting more until the very end.I love one that has me blushing, smiling and laughing the entire time.
