Kids Movies 2011 – Guide
26.06.11 # Movie Releases # 33 CommentsJudy Moody And The NOT Bummer Summer
Release Date: 10 June 2011
Starring: Jordana Beatty, Heather Graham, Parris Mosteller
Director: John Schultz

Third-grader Judy Moody sets out to have the most thrilling summer of her life. With her parents away she hangs with her fun-loving aunt (Heather Graham) and competes with her friends to amass the most ‘thrill points’, a pursuit that includes helping her brother catch Bigfoot. Inspired by the series of books for readers who aren’t quite ready for young-adult material, this is an all-new adventure, penned by the author, that skews even younger than the books. In fact, prepare yourself for a movie that has ADHD of the worst kind. Relentlessly tiresome slapstick for the youngest of young kids only. [Critics - 15%] [Public - 3/10] **Worst Reviewed Of The Year**
Mr. Popper’s Penguins
Release Date: 17 June 2011
Starring: Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Madeline Carroll, Angela Lansbury
Director: Mark Waters

A driven businessman (Jim Carrey) is clueless when it comes to the important things in life, until he inherits six penguins. Soon he’s turned his swank New York apartment into a snowy winter wonderland and the rest of his life is upside-down. This is a contemporary adaptation of the kids book that’s been a favourite since the ’30s. The director made Mean Girls and the under-appreciated Spiderwick Chronicles, but turning the Emperor Penguins cgi sometimes to do highly improbable things will take away from the charm. The divine Angela Lansbury (Murder She Wrote) also stars. [Critics - 46%] [Public - 5.8/10]
Cars 2
Release Date: 24 June 2011
Starring: (voices) Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer
Directors: John Lasseter, Brad Lewis

By Pixar’s standard, Cars was their weakest moment. But the merchandising power of that movie was phenomenal, and it’s just made too much money for them to ignore. While Toy Story 3 was their take on the prison break movie, Cars 2 is their go at the accidental spy thriller. Race car Lightning McQueen (Wilson) and tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) head to Japan and Europe to compete in the World Grand Prix, but Mater is mistaken for an agent and ends up working with Finn McMissile (Caine). Expect beautiful visuals, but this is the first of their movies made for the wrong reasons. [Critics - 34%] [Public - 6.7/10]
Winnie The Pooh
Release Date: 15 July 2011
Starring: (voices) Jim Cummings, Craig Ferguson, Peter Cullen, John Cleese (narrator)
Directors: Stephen J. Anderson, Don Hall

Owl sends the philosophical “bear of very little brain” and friends Tigger, Rabbit, Piglet, Kanga, Roo and Eeyore on a wild quest to save Christopher Robin from an imaginary culprit. Meanwhile, Eeyore has lost his tail. It turns out to be a very busy day for a bear who simply set out to find some hunny. The 2D animation literally looks like something that was made in the 60s, which is nostalgically nice and all, but why wouldn’t you just watch one of the classic Pooh movies from that era? There’s also just something ‘off’ about the faintly-depressing trailer, like everything is struggling to click. Hopefully this is misleading and it turns out to be the wonderful throwback it’s hoping to be.
The Smurfs
Release Date: 29 July 2011
Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Hank Azaria
Director: Raja Gosnell

When evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world into New York city. Now they must find a way back home before Gargamel tracks them down. Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays play an expectant couple whose lives are turned upside down by the arrival of the Smurfs. Live action/CGI hybrid from the director of Scooby-Doo and Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Katy Perry voices Smurfette. Count me out, but you’re all welcome to it.

Shucks you guys, I feel so special.
I think this list goes to prove that kids are treated as second-rate citizens in movie-land. Not exactly an inspiring list of films.
Like when I was younger, my 3 sons (aged 6, 9 & 11), all prefer watching films that are meant for older children (e.g. 12a rated films). I think Thor is definitely their favourite of the year so far and the final Harry Potter part 2 is the most highly anticipated (after recently completing our movie marathon recap of all the previous HP films
)
We haven’t seen too many out of this list, it’s quite expensive for a family of 5 to go to the cinema so the films have to be worth it!
Tangled: Only released in the UK at the beginning of the year. Fun for all the family, great visuals and exciting action pieces. 4 stars
Rio: My 6 year old love it but a bit tame for my eldest (and adults). 3 stars
Hop: This was a great idea but wasn’t executed very well. Very festive but a bit of a scrambled message (see what I did) 2 1/2 stars
Kung Fu Panda 2: My wife took the kids to see this while I was away for the day (hate it when that happens!). They all enjoyed it equally as the first. My wife was impressed with the way the dealt with Po’s relationship with his two Dads. 4 stars
Ones I want to show them are
Rango: Looks visually striking and got good reviews. Also a bit obscure/different
Diary Of A Wimpy Kid 2: We passed by the original film as it looked like usual U.S. drivel but were pleasantly surprised when my boys chose it on their DVD night. The character, Rowley, is fantastic, reminds me of Jack Black. This could be equally as fun (but still only rental calibre)
Lion King 3D: I had an inkling Disney were going to start re-releasing their back-catalogue in 3D. Despite the obvious evil money-making scheme I don’t think Ill be able to resist. Surprised they picked the Lion King as the first one (would have preferred Aladdin) but should look impressive with all those epic vistas, not to mention the whole *SPOILERS* wildebeest/Mufasa death scene.
Puss in Boots/Happy Feet 2: I’ll lump these in the same category. We all enjoyed the originals (except Shrek 3) so these have some potential (more so for Puss in Boots)
Muppets: This surely can’t fail, can it? Very anticipated.
Hugo Carbret: Really intrigued by this one. Seems like it could be quite a unique experience. 3D films work really well in the best kids movies, it adds to the fun and spectacle of it all. Scorsese will hopefully add a new angle to the field and has picked to great child actors for the leads.
Well that distracted me from my work for a good 15 minutes, thanks Movie Moron
RANGO stunk; it is designed for 7 year olds
even tho the Clint Eastwood look alike’s comment
‘if this was heaven we’d all be eating pop tarts with Kim Novak’ was quite amusing
We went primarily for my SO who LOVES Johnny Depp
Other than THAT revelation stay away even on home video
Honestly, I hated Rango and Happy Feet 2. Rango was quite slow at the beginning. Not ashamed to say I easily got bored of it. I’d say my favourite movies were Tangled and Kung Fu Panda and Toy Story. They had great humour, even if it wasn’t remotely realistic. Rio and Hop weren’t bad but I liked Hugo better as it was really a different kind of kids movie. It really had a different feel to it than other movies. It was interesting but I must say, when I was about to watch it, I thought it would be boring. That really proves the saying,’Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.’
Just my opinion.
Livia,
12 year old, aspiring author.
i totally disagree with you kctobyjoe… i took my kids to see it and they really enjoyed it and so did i… i thought it was really clever and original (my kids are 9 and 12)
I am sorry but rango was extremely boring to me and my husband. Very slow movie at the beginning not much going on we both fell asleep. . I will admit our son loved the movie and cracked up the entire time.
Huh the best kids movies of 2011 will be Kung fu Panda 2, Muppets and Hugo Cabret
no those are the worst movies you just said!!!!!
I love the movie Mr Poppers Penguins It was Fantastic and i was the best i want it to be on DVD NOW and I love movie 16 Wishers it is funny and wonderful!
I LOVE MOVIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Monte Carlo is an awful movie selena gomez is so cool but if they are gonna make a movie at least try. if your looking for a good kids movie from 2011 watch Cars 2 PEACE OUT!!!!!!
TINTIN
finally! i thought they would make a movie of the books some day! imma see that, i loved the books since i was in grade school.
is they’re any more good kids movies?
oh and does any 1 no any more rip offs of real movies besides disaster movie and epic movies??
oh and prom is awsome so is the newest footloose
puss in boots was a total crack up, but i think dreamworks is getting a little desperate for new movie ideas, i mean madagascar 3? come on!
Happy feet 2 was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I havn’t even seen Happy Feet and I was soooo excited to see it and it was awesome… out of all these movies I recommend this one the most… it’ll make you cry!
:’(
RIO was way better then RANGO becuase RIO had more vibrant colors and a better storieline and more interesting chatures and JOHNNY DEPP cant act at all even playing a stupid looking lizard
Flu-Bird, just saying, but Johnny Depp CAN act. He’s AH-MAZING in The Pirates of the Caribbean Series. But I have to admit, Rango was horrible. GO RIO!
I love the movie Rio,it is soooo fantastic I like it more than rango because Rio has more adventures only one question is there better kids movies:-)
!!
I live the movie Hop and especially Rango!
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 was totally the best movie of 2011. I absolutely loved it. I am a Harry Potter fanatic but this movie really was amazing. I have no idea why it isn’t on the list. It was amazing. They really have outdone themselves. I love harry Potter. Even Harry Potter haters will love this movie. Some of the movies listed were absolutely terrible. Such as kung Fu Panda 2, The Muppets, and Mr. Poppers Penguins. Then again that is just my opinion
Gnomeo & Juliet was AWFUL. How can that movie possibly be listed?
Rango…worst movie on the list. lost my attention within ten minutes, was way out in left field and didn’t make much sense
Rio gets five stars from my family. The brilliant colors keep my two year old entertained through the whole movie (everytime) so I can get homework done! Couldn’t ask for more than that.
Husbands favorite was Kungfu Panda.
Excited to watch Happy Feet 2 tomorrow night, family movie and pizza night. I’m sure it will be a blast for the whole family.
