On The Road – First Pics

The first official images of the upcoming adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s iconic novel, ‘On the Road’, have just been released. For those who don’t know the book, it’s essentially an account of Kerouac’s travels across America with fictitious names in place of the real people’s names that they are based on. Kerouac’s novel is regarded by many as one of the most influential of the 20th century. It captured the post-war zeitgeist and helped influence a cultural revolution across the Western world.

There have been numerous attempts to get a film of it made, going all the way back to 1957 when Marlon Brando expressed a desire to star in an adaptation alongside Kerouac himself. Finally, with the help of Francis Ford Coppola who is producing, things have panned out.

The film will primarily centre on the relationship between Sal Paradise (Kerouac’s fictional alter-ego) and his friend Dean Moriarty. Directing is Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles. Although not the most familiar name, in many ways Salles was an obvious choice for this being the guy behind the brilliant Che Guevara road movie, ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’. In fact it was on seeing that film that Francis Ford Coppola offered the director this gig.

So it’s based on a classic book, it’s got a top director and Francis Ford Coppola is producing. Oh and I forgot to mention- it’s got an amazingly cool cast as well! Sam Riley (Control, Brighton Rock) is taking on the role of Sal Paradise and he is backed up by Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, Terrence Howard and Steve Buscemi. All the ingredients are in place for this to be an excellent piece of cinema.

I almost forgot to show you the rest of the pics. Here they are-

Garrett Hedlund, playing the role of Dean Moriarty, recently had a few words to say on what it was like shooting the film-

“Improv was highly welcomed, to make scenes flow and have a rhythm…We had the freedom to fly.”

He has also previously described filming as:

“quite a guerilla shoot. At times, there’s just been two handfuls of crew members around us and it’s a very quiet situation”

‘On the Road’ is due out later this year.

Sounds interesting. Can’t say I’m particularly into the post-war beat generation or live a lifestyle of jazz, drugs, poetry, and spontaneous road trips but I’m willing to try it.

Will watch it for Kristen Stewart. She looks intriguing in the stills.
