Top 5 Free Horror Movies On The Net
11.07.11 # Top Ten # 6 CommentsThere are a few good horror movies online, that are legal and free. But they sure are buried in a pile of crap. We’ve picked the diamonds from the rough to make sure you get a scare without spending a penny or lifting a butt cheek.
These are the top 5 best free horror movies online right now:
5. THE ADDICTION (1995)
Abel Ferrara’s realistic take on the vampire movie, that sets out to make you think. A New York philosophy student (Lily Taylor) is bitten and after observing her lifestyle changing, bumps into a master vampire (Christopher Walken). He tries to show her how to live without feeding, but it doesn’t quite work as there’s a massacre at her graduation. Expect literary quotes, black and white and an allegory for drug addiction. The Guardian’s critic says it’s one of his top ten favourite movies of all time. Others may find it a bit slow.

4. PULSE (1988)
If you’re like me, you’re terrified of the electrics in your apartment. I’ve literally got to the point of switching off the fuse to change a lightbulb. But what if that danger wasn’t years of shoddy work, but an evil presence? Pulse is an atmospheric horror movie that preys on that fear, through the eyes of a young Joey Lawrence, trapped in a house where all the appliances are out for blood. Unrelated to the 2001 Japanese movie of the same name, this is influenced by John Carpenter, even down to clips of Starman popping up on the TV. Totally 80s, and that’s a plus.

3. TENEBRAE (1982)
An American writer promoting his latest murder-mystery in Rome becomes embroiled in the search for a serial-killer who has apparently been inspired to kill by the novel. If you’re unfamiliar with director Dario Argento, then be prepared for some bad acting (the lead guy is good), awkward cuts, and several wtf moments, but that’s part of the point with his movies – they’re meant to be dream-like, filled with striking imagery and making just enough sense to hang together. The whodunit plotting here is creepy and misdirects well, the death sequences blood-soaked and inventive. The music from Goblin is classic.

2. DAY OF THE DEAD (1985)
George A. Romero’s most underrated movie, and his own personal favourite. Essentially it takes a boiled-down version of society and observes how ego and a lack of human communication leads to disaster. It’s blinkered scientist vs brutal military captain, with everyone else stuck in the middle. And in Capt. Rhodes (above) it features one of the most magnificent shouty bastards ever to grace the screen. Day also has the most realistic zombie gore fx yet, thanks to an absence of cgi and Tom Savini at the height of his powers.

1. AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (1981)
Two American students are attacked by a werewolf while backpacking across Yorkshire, infecting one, and turning the other into the undead. This is one of the best horror movies ever made, online or off. Certainly the best werewolf film. Effortlessly going from big laughs to truly nightmare-inducing scares, it also does a wonderful job of capturing London in the early 80s. And like Day Of The Dead features practical FX at their absolute best. Empire magazine called it the 107th greatest movie of all time.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS
(Only Available For A Short Time)
Bram Stoker’s Dracula here (US), Mary Reilly here (US), From Dusk Til Dawn here (US)
Let me know what you think of these in the comments. If you spot any other good horror movies online leave a link.
I’m pretty sure Night of the Living Dead, Dementia 13, The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, Silent Night Bloody Night and carnival of souls are in the public domain.
But the five films on the list are all classics.
I recently noticed that blinkbox had a load of free movies but they all looked like supermarket bargain bin crap to bother with. Nice to know there are a few diamonds in the pile!
I’d love to see other recommendations for free online movies, maybe dramas and comedies most.
What about The Tunnel??
http://www.thetunnelmovie.net/
Totally free and supported by donations and Buying A Frame. But you can torrent it totally for free from the makers of the film.
Plus it’s actually GOOD.
The Tunnel was an *excellent* film. Also, as stated earlier, totally free.
You can watch Waxworks 1 and 2 on Youtube. Classics If you don’t know them, then you’re not really alive
This is an awesome post!
