Nightmare On Elm Street Remake – No Robert Englund As Freddy
5.02.08 # News # 226 CommentsSo Michael Bay’s production company, Platinum Dunes, are remaking Nightmare, without Robert Englund. Sources have pretty much confirmed he’s out.
Before we go on, if any of you are curious what a Michael Bay produced Nightmare On Elm Street might look like, this could give you some idea -
Giving Robert Englund the axe… The problem is that Englund didn’t just own the role in the past, he owns it just as much today. He was as energetic and as on the money in Freddy vs Jason as he was back in 1984. He doesn’t need to be rebooted.
Then again, familiarity doesn’t breed fear. The character of Freddy is as beloved and as watchable today as ever, but is he still scary? Not really. Create a new Freddy, with a new actor and new make up effects and hold back on the reveal, and you could have the first truly terrifying Nightmare in a long time.
It’s down to casting, but the track record of Platinum Dunes is a worry. In the last situation like this, they picked Sean Bean to be the new Hitcher – big mistake. Bean is a good actor, but he’s not edgy and off the wall and was absolutely wrong for the part. He was a safe, stock choice from the Hollywood villains list.
Whoever they pick this time better be inspired…

Here’s the problem with the Freddy Krueger franchise = Deminishing Returns. Each movie getting worse and worse. Making less and less money. Less and less interest from new viewers.
Now here’s the problem with this thread = Fanboys. If Fanboys were allowed to make decisions, you’d have a 78 year old playing James Bond. A 78 year old playing Captain Kirk and the Superman franchise would have died with Christopher Reeves.
Why is it that Fanboys cannot distinguish between an actor and a character they portray?
Will this new movie compete with Titanic for all time biggest? No. Will it do better than Robert Englund doing Freddy part 25? Yes.
So thankfully for normal people, movie execs are not nostalgic Fanboys.
PS– Franko was right on. Jackie kicked ass in Watchmen. Can see why he was chosen for the new Freddy Krueger.
Nicely put Sarah. The Elm street sequels did to freddy what Bride of chucky and Seed of Chucky did to Yep you guess it, Chucky. They turned him from a Horror icon to a comic relief. Familiarity doesnt breed fear. Freddy needs a new face, one that will remove him from our dreams and back in our nightmares.
Nightmare without Robert Englund is not the same, I grew up with him, Robert is Freddy. I was in high school when the movie first came out and has seen everyone of them over and over again since.
whats with all the remakes?no robert enguland?was this directors choice or what?hope they make up for it in story line dont try to sex it up like all the other movies. im really having second thoughts about seeing this because most of the times its not a remake its a whole another movie like uhh prom night, house on soreity row….. need i say more. hopefully qualitie actors not some old looking actors trying to still play high school students.im keeping my fingers cross.(side eye)
for all you fanboys out there, robert englund already gave it the thumbs up, there was a trailer at comic-con and i doubt robert hasn’t already seen the movie…guys, he didn’t want to be freddy anymore, he already said that freddy needs a new face and shouldn’t robert’s reassurance be enough? i mean he already said it was okay and just look at how badass the friday the 13th remake was…it was genious…so calm down dudes, it’s gonna be awesome
First of all, I liked the remake of Texas Chainsaw. However, I never saw the original (ok you can boo me now). Remember that Bay is NOT the director of these horror remakes, just the producer fronting the money, so please don’t judge the films he produces the same way as one he would have directed. He has much less influence over the outcome as a producer. Friday the 13th remake I found so so, wasn’t too impressed but I didn’t think it was rotten either. Jackie Earle Haley however I do like. I think of anyone he is going to give a decent performance as Freddy. No he’s not Robert Englund, but when I first saw the poster of Heath Ledger as the joker I thought “Ok come on…Heath?! He’s no Jack! Jack is the Joker!” Now after seeing Heath’s performance I hold him on top. Who knows? Maybe Haley will outmatch Englund (not likely IMO) maybe he wont but don’t knock the film before you’ve even seen it. Watch it and THEN give your opinion…or if you are gonna bash Haley at least toss down some facts instead of “its gonna suck cause I say so”
well said bennyboy, i remember people bashing tim burton when they heard michael keaton was cast as batman back in ’89, but nobody complained when they saw his performance…so please, don’t rate this film low just because robert englund isn’t in it, FYI he’s not imortal so when he dies, then who will play freddy? we need to accept that the guy isn’t exactly what he used to be and his health might be strained if he works on this again…
im the biggest fan of a nightmare on elm street, i been a fan since i was 4 years old my father use too pick me up as a baby sit on his lap and watch the whole movie. well i think the remake well be good but it well be alot better if robert englund was freddy, its going to be weird with out him cause robert is freddy.
This is a terrible idea that is not Freddy they will ruin Nightmare on Elm street with out the really Freddy.
So I just saw the trailer! I’m completely annoyed by this new guys face. New Line Cinema is best known as “The House That FREDDY Built”, look it up! New Line was going bankrupt until Freddy came out, all thanks to Robert Englund. They made a fortune. I really hope it’s worth it. I will admit that the Last House On The Left remake was alot better then I’d expected and I was pretty pissed when I heard they had changed that too. SO I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
i’m a true robert englund fan and he still gives me chills to this day as freddy. he is freddy kruger.theres’ no replacing robert as freddy are they serious?i wonder why he got the axe was there an issue with money like there was with chris tucker in next friday.if so they should pay him what he’s asking, he deserves it and more!
Robert Englund didn’t get axed. He was offerred the role and turned it down saying that he felt he was too old to play Freddy anymore but said that if any movie was in need of or deserved a re-imaging/remake it was definitely Nightmare on Elm Street. He said that they could really take advantage of new movie technology and do some great things with the dream sequences. He also said that he might consider a cameo in the new film as maybe the dream doctor or something like that if approached. He also said that he thought Jackie was a great choice to be the new Freddy and just hoped that Jackie would not just try to imitate his Freddy but to make the Character his own.
Its done and made about to release 2010 but ok tranformers was great but come on!!! Robert Englund horror legend mentioned in a interview “If the new movie has a sweatshirt and a straw hat I’m going to be greatly disappointed” or something like that. Guess what the new Freddy has a freakin sweatshirt and straw hat
.
Its recycling to the same image which is lazy like Mike Myers, Jason and think this is typically bad creativity. In terms of directors also why Micheal Bay? Why couldn’t they make a new character prodigy or at least change the look?
At least with Mike Myers and Jason they only needed to shine there masks. This is horrible movie remake.
I just saw the Nightmare on Elm Street re-make preview at a movie the other day. I must say that it did catch my attention. First of all, I DO think Michael Bay is trying to hold on to that whole artistic, “scary as hell” dream setting that Wes Craven did so well. However, I’m not really liking the fact that Robert Englund isn’t playing Freddy. Robert Englund is THE ONLY Freddy! You just CAN’T replace him. Plus, the face of the new Freddy isn’t even the same. From what I saw, it’s not as scary as the face Wes Craven created for Robert Englund.
Truthfully, I’ll go see the new one because I want to compare it to the original. I’ll try to keep an open mind. But I’m wishing that Michael Bay would’ve kept Robert Englund to play Freddy. It’s a re-make…not everything has to be different!
Now it would be really cool if they would start making NEW stories for the original Freddy. How would the teens of this century handle Fred Krueger?!
Looks ok. Enjoyed that it looks like they show him being burnt and how the parents accuse him of being a sick mofo. Would have liked to see maybe a younger character as freddy. Revitalise it a little like heath ledger as the joker. Had the same layout just changed a few minor things. Also the face of the new freddy doesn’t look as sick as the original. that rocked balls………
