Nightmare On Elm Street Remake – No Robert Englund As Freddy

So Michael Bay’s production company, Platinum Dunes, are remaking Nightmare, without Robert Englund. Sources have pretty much confirmed he’s out.

Before we go on, if any of you are curious what a Michael Bay produced Nightmare On Elm Street might look like, this could give you some idea -

Giving Robert Englund the axe… The problem is that Englund didn’t just own the role in the past, he owns it just as much today. He was as energetic and as on the money in Freddy vs Jason as he was back in 1984. He doesn’t need to be rebooted.

Then again, familiarity doesn’t breed fear. The character of Freddy is as beloved and as watchable today as ever, but is he still scary? Not really. Create a new Freddy, with a new actor and new make up effects and hold back on the reveal, and you could have the first truly terrifying Nightmare in a long time.

It’s down to casting, but the track record of Platinum Dunes is a worry. In the last situation like this, they picked Sean Bean to be the new Hitcher – big mistake. Bean is a good actor, but he’s not edgy and off the wall and was absolutely wrong for the part. He was a safe, stock choice from the Hollywood villains list.

Whoever they pick this time better be inspired…

Well that looks absolutely horrible. I’m pretty sure the Nightmare series is horror… not action… how sad…

A large part of the foundations upon which the ANOES series were made was partly thanx to Robert Englund and his excellent portrayal of the sinisterly evil (and my hero) Freddy Krueger. There is no argument in the matter. Chris who made his less than informed comments circa Feb 17th is one of the reasons why the horror genre has disintegrated into the sorry excuse that it has become today. I really cant classify any movie that i have seen in the last 15years or so as horror. Most i would put into the thriller category or the more so as slasher flicks.
I really do like Tim Burton, i like his movies but if u knew anything about the man you would know that he is not the man to gut the Nightmare collection. It would probably come across as something in between Edward Scissorhands and Batman Returns. Oh wait, thats what Sleepy Hollow was. And by the way, i almost fell off my seat when i read that you thought Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd were horrors. What horror movies have you been watching? Next you’ll be saying that Hannibal was a horror.
As for the whole Johnny Depp – Shia LaBeouf thing, i watched Disturbia and Transformers and i wasn’t really impressed. Depp’s my favourite actor but this is one role that i know inside and out and i don’t think, actually i KNOW that this role would be out of the league of the great Johnny Depp. The very mentioning of Hillary Duff should show everyone that you really don’t know what the hell you are talking about Chris. Chris, i don’t know bout you, but the first thing i noticed about Marge Thompson was how warm and loving she was towards Nancy, even though she was all liquored up. DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT HELENA BONHAM CARTER COULD DO THAT WITHOUT CREEPING YOU OUT?
What all us true Nightmare fans can agree on is that no one can bring to the table the level of intensity and finesse to the character of Freddy like Robert Englund has done over the past 3 decades. No Englund no Freddy. Its as simple as that.
I LOVED the original Halloween movie. The whole story bout a boy from the typical suburban family, who for no reason given or needed, just kills his sister. Its the makings of a good horror movie and a great line up for sequels. Now with Rob Zombie’s version, the whole white trash hill billy concept has been flogged to death and he inadvertedly killed the scariest element in the movie. He gave a reason for his blood lust and allowed the audience to identify with Michael Myers. Tragic results. I was almost glad when he killed off Myers at the end because it ended the story there. No possibility for him to make a sequel, hopefully anyways. My point is that remakes are more often than usual destructive to the originals. Zombie killed that side of Myers that single handedly terrorfied the movie goers. (Chris this is another example of how a horror movie can be butchered into a slasher flick, can you see the difference?) And someone please explain to me why there needs to be a Friday 13th and Birds remake.
I really don’t want to see this movie made but i know it will be.My suggestion, Wes Craven started it and he should be the one to end it. Freddy can’t be a wise cracking burns victim. I rigorously enjoyed the more terrorfying side to him. Only Englund can fit the role. Who better than the man who created him, his personality, and the man who everyone identifies as Freddy. AND for the love of god, dont give us the whole back story to Freddy, because its already been done. It wasn’t done well, but what can you expect when you create the perfect boogieman then try to perfect him even more. It just doesn’t work. I consider myself a fan, but i have to admit 2 through to 7 (not so much 3) were the biggest disappointments to the original. You can’t perfect something that is already perfect. The original was the only standout of them all. Another thing, stay true to the story. Nothing more i can add. This prequel/remake is inevitable. As much as i hate knowing that Michael Bay is the worst thing to happen to old beauties since Ashton Kutcher (hence transformers and in Ashton’s case Demi Moore), i know this movie will be made because there are still die-hard ANOES supporters all over the world. Its a guaranteed money maker regardless whether u love or hate the cast and/or director. Hopefully i’m wrong and this movie wont suck as much as i think it will.

thomas this movie is an abomination and a slap in the face to every loyal anoes fan. i 4 one am going 2 boycott it, and i would expect the same of every1 else. even if robert did play freddy, i will not watch it. the franchise has become exactly that. a franchise. a fast way to make money off us. they see us as nothing but puppets, and they are the ones pulling the strings. well i say no more. i cant stand to see another classic movie slaughtered mercilessly by the fools in hollywood. texas chainsaw massacre, psycho, halloween, carrie, now the birds and friday the 13th!! all have and will be butchered by talentless directors and more than willing producers. some things dont need 2 be changed. some things dont need to be done again because there has been advances in film technology. nightmare 1 was perfect in every way. it cannot be improved in any way. don’t u agree?

I am absolutely opposed to this remake. NO! This can not be happening. A Nightmare on Elm Street was the first horror movie I ever saw. I have grown up watching Freddy and I have fallen in love with Robert Englund. I worship Wes Craven with all his intense and creative idea. He is a mastermind of horror. Robert Englund is the essence of what Freddy Krueger is. He is pure evil. Englund has always been able to shock us with his roles in the Nightmare series. He not only causes us to jump and scream but he can make us laugh at the most perverse lines. The thought of a new Freddy being played by someone other the infamous Robert Englund is absolute horror blasphemy! Hollywood is simply trying to make money off of this new generation of kids and teens who have not even had the blessing of viewing what true horror is. This generation now has grown up watching crap like Scream (not a good choice on Wes’s part)and remakes of classics like the Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween. Half of the people who have gone to see these remakes didn’t even know they were remakes!!!! If anyone has ever watched these originals they would know what true classics they really are, what they stood for, and how they aimed to change horror forever. Freddy, Jason, Michael, etc they all came about to show us that evil in it’s purest form can never die. And I think by allowing these remakes is letting these classics fade away! It is up to us, the true fans, the ones that know the history of these characters to stand up and fight Hollywood! I just can’t stand back and let my favorite horror film be slaughtered like this. Don’t get me wrong, I think Michael Bay is decent but one of his vices is remaking horror! The only way I have been able to watch these remakes without cringing is to constantly tell myself that it is not a remake but there is just no way I could do this with A Nightmare on Elm Street. Englund gave Freddy his personality and his sadistic charisma that you can’t help but fall in love with. This series has been a passion of mine for twenty + years! I’ve seen every movie more than I can count. I know the lines, I know the story, I defended Freddy when Freddy vs. Jason came out. Classic horror is a part of my life that I can’t let die! Technology will not make these films better, new actors sure as hell won’t make it any better either! This remake is a mistake and something has to be done! I’ll be damned if I let this generation watch this remake and think that it is anything other than worthless!

Man….Some of you sound like you think the world is coming to an end just because they are planning a “re-imaging” of “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. Get over it people!!!…Its just a friggin movie for crying out loud!!! If you don’t like it, then don’t friggin watch it!!!!! I’m a huge Freddy fan myself and while I would love for them to keep Rober England in the role of Freddy, I’m not going to lose any sleep over it or cry “horror blasphemy” if they decide to put another actor under the Freddy makeup. I am truly looking forward to seeing what they can do with today’s special effects technology to re-image the original classic. Some of you really need to take a chill pill as you are taking this remake protest entirely too seriously!!!

Tom it is to a certain extent horror blasphemy……..ok maybe thats going a bit too far BUT i’m still strongly against the “re-imaging”
(a term which u sport way too easily) of ANOES. the reason why we can be so angry and up in arms about this remake/sequel is because we are the ppl who have stood by this franchise thru good and bad (and trust me there was ALOT of bad) and we are the ones who pay to watch it. dont give me that crap “then dont watch it”……that shudnt eveen be a possibility. this movie shud not be made. the nightmare era is ova. its the same reason why ABBA refused to get bak together….even though a billion dopllars was offered to them to go on one last ttour…they turned it down. a billion dollars. $1,000,000,000,000
thats alot of zeros. but i dont blame them. they are from another milestone in history.
freddy and the franchise shopuld not have to endure that.

Astro, You definitely need a chill pill!!…Once again, when and if they decide to do this movie, if you don’t like it then don’t watch it…It really doesn’t get any simpler than that…after all, nobody’s forcing you or anybody else to like the idea of this remake and nobody’s going to force you or anybody else to spend your hard earned money watching this movie which you and some others are apparently having a complete breakdown over. It appears some of you really need to rethink your priorities in life if you are really serious about how angry you appear to be about this remake. Personally, I’d love to see it remade, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it if in the end they decide not to remake it either. Its just a damn movie for crying out loud people…get over it!!

I think alot of people are missing the main point of freddy Kreuger. Freddy was so twisted and morbid in his mind, that he had a Joker like approach to his victims. he is a psycho path, he shouldnt be “Jason-like” his dark and morbidness comes from his tendacey to laugh and crack jokes while viciously finding ways to kill you in your dreams. Thats what made Freddy so scarey to people for the past 30 years. Hopefully they keep that in mind while doing the remake. But i only Have two request if they do a remake:

1.Do not let micheal bay do the commentary (let the actors and people who actually did something with the movie have commentaries) im tired of watching micheal bay put himself over for the ENTIRE movie, I wanted to find this guy and punch him in the face by the 30 minute mark, and by the end of Transformers, i wanted to slowly quarter bay while doing the chinese water technique and turkish papercutting.

2.Dont try to worry about the original ANOES saga, go in a completely different way as far as storyline and backstory, and also make the Dream scenarios and kills keep a fine line between actuality and fantasy. Finally, keep the mythos of Kreuger’s mental disturbia and just tweak it enough to where it make people question whether they want to go to sleep that night.

Don’t replace Robert Englund if you want the new “Nightmare On Elm St” to stand a chance. It would really take away from Michael Bay’s successful reputation if he made such a dumb move.

You guys are still knocking it and it hasn’t even been made yet. I’m definitely going to see it whether it has Robert Englund in it or not. As I said in an earlier post, just because Robert Englund has always played Freddy doesn’t mean another actor can’t pull it off just as well if not better (heck, you can’t even tell its Robert Englund under all that Freddy makeup anyway)…Also, as I said earlier, Christopher Reve wasn’t the first Superman but he is the one most recognized and accepted as Superman. How many Batman’s have there been and nobody cares as long as the story/movie is good….How many James Bonds have there been and once again nobody cares as long as the story/movie is good. Heck Robert Englund even said in an interview that while he doesn’t think he could play Freddy again (didn’t say he wouldn’t) but that he would definitely be open to a cameo appearance which tells me that even he is agreeable to this remake….
