Nightmare On Elm Street Remake – No Robert Englund As Freddy
5.02.08 # News # 226 CommentsSo Michael Bay’s production company, Platinum Dunes, are remaking Nightmare, without Robert Englund. Sources have pretty much confirmed he’s out.
Before we go on, if any of you are curious what a Michael Bay produced Nightmare On Elm Street might look like, this could give you some idea -
Giving Robert Englund the axe… The problem is that Englund didn’t just own the role in the past, he owns it just as much today. He was as energetic and as on the money in Freddy vs Jason as he was back in 1984. He doesn’t need to be rebooted.
Then again, familiarity doesn’t breed fear. The character of Freddy is as beloved and as watchable today as ever, but is he still scary? Not really. Create a new Freddy, with a new actor and new make up effects and hold back on the reveal, and you could have the first truly terrifying Nightmare in a long time.
It’s down to casting, but the track record of Platinum Dunes is a worry. In the last situation like this, they picked Sean Bean to be the new Hitcher – big mistake. Bean is a good actor, but he’s not edgy and off the wall and was absolutely wrong for the part. He was a safe, stock choice from the Hollywood villains list.
Whoever they pick this time better be inspired…

I agree with chris they shouldnt touch this movie its a classic and its roberts character. And if anyone should do a remake at all it should be tim burton because sweeny tood was awesome imagine what he could do with freddy.
I have to say this, please understand that I hold the entire Nightmare Franchise very close to my heart. Freddy is tattood on my right arm, and I have a Freddy collection that rivals most. So I feel confident in saying this…
THIS FILM SHOULD NOT BE MADE.
I have read every post on here and have taken everything in. Someone posted earlier that they would hate to see Musicians in cameo roles, and blonde sluts playing important roles ( such as Nancy ).
I agree with all of that, as well as my own fears. No matter what, this movie will forever change our perspective on The Nightmare Films we have all come to know and admire. It’s a fact. The question is, why?
I can answer that… Money. It’s an easy film to target as a successful remake. Especially if NewLine Cinema is giving Platinum Dunes ( Michael Bay ) the rights and Studio financing to make this movie. Fact is, there will be SOMETHING in this film that will piss off the hard-core fan base. If not, MANY.
However, that’s just the thing. There are LESS of us, and MORE people willing to say it was awsome just because the story and franchise got a facelift. It’s all about money. If they can make more money by bringing in 50 Cent to Play Rod and hire Lindsey Lohan to Play Tina, then they will do it all while losing what little dignity the franchise had left. However, if that was the case… I wouldn’t mind watching Lohan get dragged accross the walls while bleeding all over the room, getting slaughtered from head to toe… mmmmmmmmm. Death to crappy Hollywood Actresses.
Point is, this movie WILL indeed be made… and will INDEED suck for only one type of fan. You and me. The hardcore fan base that has stuck by the franchise through Freddy’s Dead/New Nightmare and the steaming pile of turd that WAS Freddy Vs. Jason. I only admire Robert’s performance in that one. Everything else could have been canned in my opinion. Bad news is, this NEW remake will make Freddy Vs. Jason look like ” Citezen Cane “. So prepare yourself… and spend the extra $7.00 for Popcorn, because that will be the only highlight of this movie for you. I promise you.

Hey Tom! Is it really necessary for you to say the same thing over and over and over again for a half a year straight? You’ve posted the same sh*t six times already. Yes we get it, you’re the only retard out there who thinks a “re-imaging” is a good idea. And you’re all about craming your views down everyones throat. Who are you really trying to convince, us or you? What a douche.
Well Reznor, apparently you are willing to read what you call “the same sh*t” six times so perhaps I should keep posting the same sh*t for your benefit so you can keep reading it. Bottom line is if it happens it happens and if it doesn’t it doesn’t. Heck, I even heard on the radio the other day when they were talking about this movie about some guy that has been going around with a petition for months trying to stop this remake from happenning (he apparently only had 46 signatures and the radio people were laughing at his efforts telling him to get a job and a life..LOL). The radio station definitely was excited about the possibility of this remake so I’m pretty sure you guys on this board that are so adamently against this remake are definitely in the minority… Have a great weekend…..LOL
They should not do this remake, especially without Robert England as Freddy. I just don’t get it, Hollywood remakes all of the classics, but they don’t remake all the bad movies. I will say this now, if they still go with this remake and from what I understand, they have contacted Johnny Depp to be Freddy, I will not see it. No Robert, no money spending for me to see it.
Hey Joe, why would Hollywood want to remake any of the bad movies when very few went to see them the first time around?? And while I realize that you don’t like the idea of remaking this movie, at least you aren’t having a complete meltdown over it (like most people on this board) and have just decided not so see it when and if it comes out. It’s definitely not worth losing any sleep over it…LOL
Robert is great as freddy…but he’s been freddy in 8 films now…a remake with a different actor will bring new light to freddy..which is definately what he needs!
I love remakes of old horror movies. The mistake would be not using Robert Englund, he is Freddy and no one else could replace him, it will not be the same with another actor, even if they are the best. Oh and to Chris who said Hilary Duff to play Nancy-are you insane? She makes that stupid pouty “I’m so pretty” face all the time, no way. How about Ann Hathaway as Nancy or Emmy Rossem. So my question is, does anyone know how we can contact Michael Bay and demand that Robert Englund play Freddy? Maybe not demand but plead that would probably be more appropriate, right?
Jenn
I dressed up as Nancy for Halloween it’s on my myspace page.

Ugh… You’ve gotta be kidding me! This is the most terrible idea I’ve ever heard of! There is no way that anyone could ever remake Freddy. It has been my all time favorite horror series and it is simply timeless. Also, not having Englund play Freddy? What is wrong with those people? You just can’t have Freddy without him. He is Freddy. I would love for a sequel of my beloved series to come out but a remake is out of the question. It’s completely ridiculous. Freddy is an American icon and changing him will just destroy everything that people love about him.
For the person that said “you cant even tell its Robert England under the make up” I’m sorry, have you actually seen any of the A Nightmare On Elm Street? The make up just makes it look like Robert England with Burnt Skin, all of his facial features are still very prominent o matter how much make up they applied to him in each movie, hell even when he was playing himself in New Nightmare, you still saw him as freddy Kreuger. And for some of the peopleon this board who have written their comments, it would seem that most of you just probably only recently got into ANOES, didnt really grow up watching all of the movies in theaters when they came out, staying up late and having the volume on your tv as low as be whenever Freddy was on Carson, Leno, Letterman, Arsenio Hall, and even the ill forgoten appearences on morton downey jr. and Richard bay, point is, yes it is an injustice that Robert Englund is not going to be freddy, will the movie suck? i dont know, i havent seen the movie yet to make a statement about it. the fact is, most of you who are saying the movie is going to suck, or i hate this movie without even seeing it yet, will be some of the first ones in line on opening day, so stop trying to be rebellious and anti estasblisment knowing you will simply just flock like sheep to it anyway.
what the hell is goin on how can he direct this movie.what i think would work is the director from saw and rob zombi 2 direct the film then it wud b sick and twisted and am shure ppl wud die painfull deaths in it and what they made freddy in 2 a comedian was the worst choice ov wrightin prob ever in a movie.rob zombi 4 direction
I’d just like to throw this out there-
I am a huge Horror Fan. The scarier the better. I’ve been watching these movies since the first nightmare came out on the big screen. I’ve seen every movie and even watched that terrible TV show Robert England had- i think it was Freddy’s Nightmare? I’ve got nothing but love for the man. That being said, I have to disagree with about everyone on this post- Robert Englund must not play Freddy in a remake if it’s going to be scary.
The problem is we all know him; Hell, we love the guy. And that is the problem, you can’t be scared of the guy you’re secretely cheering on. You have to hate him- and really be scered of him. That’s not going to happen with Robert E. at the helm, or Johnny Depp for that matter. I’m not saying they shouldn’t be in the film- It would be great for him to be a cop or a greiving parent, just not in a main role.
In my humble opinion, Michael Bay should be seeking out some relative unknown with the skills to deliver. Somebody no one will recognize to really make us afraid again. I’m not real happy that this movie is being remade- or Invasion (of the Bodysnatchers), Psycho, Amytiville, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw… But if it’s gonna be done at least make it as scary as the origional.
Brandon, you make a good point about why it should not be Robert Englund as Freddy but I think that Robert Englund can be very scary as Freddy, the problem that I think caused him to not be scary are those cheesy lines he started spouting. I think minus those, he would be very scary but I do see your point. It’s just hard for me, as a fan of the franchise since childhood and mainly the first movie, to think of anyone else as Freddy Kruger.
I think there was someone else on here that said that anyone wanting to a remake was not a true fan or had just started liking the movies. I have loved Nightmare since I was 10 years old and the first movie is very sentimental to me but still I would love to see a remake. I think it honors these movies to be picked for a remake, nothing will ever replace the original Nightmare on Elm Street for me but it would be nice to see those characters, the house and that first story again!!!
Jennifer
after a carefull thinking ive decided on that people should let someone else to play freddy because its the only way he will be scary again but if they do make a remake i say robert e should help out with the casting of freddy. if the film is made they have to get the scene were in the original jonny depp is eaten by his bed right or if they do it wrong then the film is ruined
Its pretty obvious based on the postings on this board that there are mixed feelings about remaking this classic movie. For those that are completely against this remake, aren’t you the least bit curious as to how the finished product will look?? Even if they do a completely horrible job with the remake, we still have the original movie to fall back on and enjoy. Heck, as soon as I saw the Amityville and Texas Chainsaw remakes (loved them both), I was kind of wondering if a Nightmare remake was a possibility.
