twilight reviews (movie)
The early Twilight reviews have swept in, wearing a big cape. Some want to suck life blood from the film, others to give it a little kiss and maybe hold its hand.

Some Twilight stats to get your head around:
– 94% of all tickets sold on Fandango yesterday were for Twilight. (What will this mean for Disney’s Bolt?)
– It has sold more advanced tickets on Fandango than Spider-Man 3.
– EW’s Twilight Saga cover was their highest selling of the year.
– The Twilight series is a New York Times Best Seller and has been #1 for 54 weeks and counting.

Here’s what the movie critics are saying -

Variety -

“Twilight is a disappointingly anemic tale of forbidden love that should satiate the pre-converted but will bewilder and underwhelm [the uninitiated ]…the actors’ early, awkward interactions feel particularly forced, and the script gives Stewart virtually nothing with which to convince the audience of her transcendent love for [Pattinson].”

Associated Press -

“…much of what made the relationship between Edward and the smitten Bella Swan work in Meyer’s breezy book has been stripped away on screen. The funny, lively banter — the way in which Edward and Bella teased and toyed with one another about their respective immortality and humanity — is pretty much completely gone in Twilight, and all that’s left is a slog of adolescent angst. (4/10)”

Entertainment Weekly -

“[Twilight] has reconjured Meyer’s novel as a cloudburst mood piece filled with stormy skies, rippling hormones, and understated visual effects. What [director] Hardwicke can’t quite triumph over is the book’s lackluster plot. On screen, Twilight is repetitive and a tad sodden, too prosaic to really soar. But Hardwicke stirs this teen pulp to a pleasing simmer. Grade: B”

Village Voice -

“…draws strong, star-making performances from the two leads…the Twilight movie gives really good swoon.”

Twilight currently holds a 46% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, from 48 reviews.

Vampires do NOT wear hoodies. They wear leather tunics, if anything. Or white dress shirts. With ruffles. Not hoodies.

Does it bug anyone else they walk around outside during the daylight? Cause it’s overcast? Anyone with me on this one, that seems really lame to me. Like the “sunblock” in Blade.

I’m still hung-up on the fact that vampires have become pretty-boy abercrombie & fitch models. That kid should have the dried blood of farm animals caked under his chin. When did vampires turn from virgin-rapers into My First Crush?

  • Kimeister said:

Maybe you should read the book before you see the movie and you would understand the “walking around in the day” and the hoodies.

  • Alex K said:

I disagree with you. These vampires are meant to blend in and deal with their immortality the best they can. Apparently you haven’t read the books… or you’re just too stuck on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

  • Chris Neilan said:

I confess, I haven’t read the books. There are way too many books by John Updike and Charles Bukowski and William Goldman and Hunter S Thomspon and Voltaire that I haven’t got time to read for me to read the Twilight books, but that’s another story. Either way: vampires are MONSTERS. Making vampires cute and caring makes about as much sense as Teenwolf (look it up).

    Teenwolf was great though.

  • Alex K said:

Clearly if you think these books/movies are cute and caring then you HAVEN’T read the books, as you’ve confessed. They are “monsters” dealing with the horrible daily urge to kill every human. What did you do, google Twilight pictures and that’s how you based your critique?.. So don’t assume when you don’t know the facts, sir. :)

For what vampires should be like, see Bram Stoker and Nosferatu. Not a hoodie in sight. My point was that, traditionally, vampires are monsters - their qualities are the qualities of the monstrous. They appear monstrous, they are ugly, gruesome, frightening, non-human, and they tend to perform acts of sexual violence on whatever female crosses their path - not exactly boyfriend material. In Twilight, the male lead is a pretty boy vampire with good skin, good hair, a cute smile, neat clothes, and he cares for the lead girl - not exactly the same, is it? So, my point was, this is a continuation of the modern reimagining of vampires (which started in Buffy by the way), and I prefer them the way they were.

It’s like casting Freddie Prinze Jnr to play Frankenstein.

I am sorry no one consulted you on what the characters “should be like”…perhaps it is good to have variations on descriptions of FICTIONAL characters in books and movies so as not to bore the hell out of everyone…just a thought.

If the movie and book had mimicked what previously had been depicted, you probably would be complaining about that too…

Isn’t this supposed to be comments about the movie? Not critiquing what you “think” a vampire should look/be like? Has anyone actually seen the movie yet?

  • katley said:

so, this is a very interesting discussion. Many people feel very strongly on this subject..like a nose, everyone has an opinion. But for our opinion….

    -the characters are FICTIONAL
    -no one likes ugly people
-the BOOKS have issues that many teens can sympathize with, so why not make the characters gorgeous too?

on a side note, more guys should read these books to learn how to make girls happy and not try and be all hard and cool all the time. There are a lot of good lessons to be learned…

so read the books to understand, and it’s obviously NOT a series for guys anyway….so get over it chris

I saw the movie, it follows the book very well. The relationship between Bella and Edward seems rushed and I didn’t feel the spark between them at first. When Bella finds out about Edward, the relationship is great and the movie is more entertaining. It’s just the beginning where they have to base their relationship that there isn’t enough time to give substance to their relationship like the book is able to do. Can’t fault anyone, they did a great job of cramming 500 pages into 2 hrs. of movie.

    or someone’s jealous………..

  • Leslie said:

I’m going to see it tomorrow…. It is a fictional story dude, so if someone writes a book….then it’s what is in “THIER” mind. Why should it stick to what you have read in the past? If that’s the case then stick to the books that you keep reading. Books and stories would be boring if they were all the same. Who is to say what a vampire looks like? We can’t go upon preference. So stop trying to sound all smart and enjoy a story for once. ;)

  • Katya said:

If the movie follows the book as closely as everyone says it does, than I’m not surprised by the negative reviews.

Crappy books make for equally crappy movies.
