Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Soundtrack

Twilight Breaking Dawn Soundtrack (Songs) OST - Listen Here & Download
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn soundtrack. ‘The wetter the better’ would seem to be the motto of whosoever in the entirety of God’s green Earth it was charged with the important and onerous task of compiling the soundtracks to the Twilight movies (a lady named Alexandra Patsavas, apparently). For this writer can distinctly recall reviewing the soundtrack to the last instalment in the Twilight franchise, Eclipse (this is a lie. I had to look it up), and good grief, if it didn’t rock me like a hurricane when compared to the selection unfurled in honour of Breaking Dawn – Part 1.

And that’s certainly not to imply that the Eclipse tie-in record was the sound of ye olde titans of rock crashing their hewn-over-the-aoens granite guitars into one another, ear-perforating thunder and eye-scorching lightning accompanying their every tossed-off lick. Yet just as a bedraggled Bassett Hound can appear a snarling killer-in-waiting when pitted against a field mouse, so even the likes of Muse and Metric seem like sonic booming behemoths when measured against the majority of acts on the Breaking Dawn soundtrack.

Even the ostensibly harder fare on Breaking Dawn is light and airy, as opposed to rockin’ and hairy, certainly in the case of both the Joy Formidable and the Noisettes; the Belle Brigade, admittedly, sound quite hirsute. And the minor league raucousness of those ker-razy kats is very much the minority interest here, they being largely smothered with softness and sentiment, courtesy of acts such as Angus & Julia Stone (she actually sounds like the aforementioned filed mouse being trod on – gently enough so as not to squash it, but with sufficient firmness to elicit not insignificant yelping).

Iron & Wine, Cider Sky and Imperial Mammoth all walk the tricky line between understated beauty and unforgivable blandness, to varying degrees of success, while the one true catastrophe of the soundtrack comes courtesy of Bruno ‘Goon-o’ Mars. Having grown alarmingly ubiquitous in recent months, Mars’ It Will Rain serves further notice of what a terrible danger his tepid, tortured vocalising represents to all free and right-thinking people. “I’ll never be your mother’s favourite,” he sings at one point. Sounds like the old gal’s got taste.
