The Muppets Soundtrack (2011, Songs) OST - Listen Here & Download
The Muppets soundtrack. The furry furies are back and out for brutal bloody vengeance. Kermit, Gonzo, Fozzy and the piano-playing dog who looks like Russell Crowe in State of Play, are riding in like the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse with arson, torture and beheading on their mind. …Oh who am I kidding. There are few things in popular culture so relentlessly, reassuringly cheery and good-natured as the Muppets, and to pretend otherwise is as futile as trying to tell yourself you’re excited about the new Bourne-less Bourne movie.

Yet while the Muppets are as cheery and chipper as ever, they are indeed back – in a new movie ingeniously entitled The Muppets (studio execs earn pay cheques, yes they do). The James Bobin-directed film itself has already been reviewed on this site by esteemed Movie Moron correspondent Dalmatian Jaws (who declared it pretty decent), but where an inevitably musical new Muppets movie treads, a new Muppets movie soundtrack cannot be trailing too far behind.

Christophe Beck is the man who has been entrusted with the task of scoring The Muppets, although his work is absent from the soundtrack album; it instead being a mix of dialogue snippets (inevitably tiresome after the first couple of listens? Discuss!), comedy cover versions of contemporary pop tunes (chickens clucking out Cee Lo Green’s oft-obscene Forget You, nee F*** You? Check!), and a handful of new songs penned by Bret McKenzie, one half of Flight of the Conchords (on whose TV show it was that Brit Bobin made his name).

Oh, and you also get Starship and We Built This City. Even the Muppets dare not tinker with that cast-iron classic.

There are nods too to the lengthy and much-loved Muppets history, with reprises of such familiar numbers as the TV show theme tune, the ever-baffling, ever-catchy Mah Na Mah Na, and Rainbow Connection, from 1979’s Muppet Movie. That latter number was co-penned by Paul Williams, a regular contributor to Muppet film soundtracks over the years and a key player in the greatest movie musical of them all, The Phantom of the Paradise; although finding someone to agree with me on that last point is almost as tricky as finding someone not brimming over with goodwill towards the Muppets themselves.
