Comedy Movies 2012 – Guide
1.01.12 # Comedy Movies # 44 CommentsA Fantastic Fear Of Everything
Starring: Simon Pegg, Alan Drake, Amara Karan, Clare Higgins, Sheridan Smith
Director: Crispian Mills
Out: 8 June 2012 (U.K.) (U.S. TBC)

A hyper-sensitive former children’s author (Pegg), now turned crime novelist, spends his nights entrenched in his latest script ‘Decades of Death’ with only his gruesome research into Victorian serial killers for company. Irrationally terrified of being murdered, he’s too scared to buy his own toilet paper, let alone use the local launderette. But he’ll need to face the latter because his long-suffering agent has finally got him a meeting. And when he ventures into the outside world, with carving knife for protection, he might just find that his paranoia isn’t entirely misplaced. Directorial debut of the former Kula Shaker frontman. Pegg often stumbles when he works with an entirely new team (see ‘Big Nothing’, ‘Burke And Hare’), and the further the role is from his real-life persona, the more he’s struggled (eg villain, accent). [Critics: 41%] [Public: 5.4] – Mediocre
That’s My Boy
Starring: Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester, James Caan
Director: Sean Anders, John Morris
Out: 15 June 2012

A disagreeable father (Sandler) moves in with his son (Samberg) and the young man’s fiancee just before the son is to get married. The father and fiancee immediately clash. Badly. The strange 12 year age difference between father and son is explained by Sandler’s character having had sex with a teacher while in high school. The movie is produced by Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions (‘Jack & Jill’, ‘Zookeeper’, ‘Grown Ups’). One of the directors helmed ‘Sex Drive’. My hunch is watching Sandler going head to head with Leighton Meester isn’t going to be very funny, I can’t remember the last time I cracked a smile at Meester, and Sandler shouting at a young woman will likely come off as mean. But let’s see. [Critics: 21%] [Public: 5.5] – Mediocre
Ted
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Seth MacFarlane (voice), Mila Kunis, Laura Vandervoort
Director: Seth MacFarlane
Out: 29 June 2012

Wahlberg plays a Boston man whose childhood wish, for his teddy bear to come to life, came true. But as an adult the bear’s vulgar slacker lifestyle is interfering with attempts to woo Mila Kunis. Director Seth MacFarlane, of ‘Family Guy’, will provide the voice of the CG-generated Ted. It’s MacFarlane’s directorial debut and the premise should provide a suitable springboard for his edgy humour. Wahlberg showed great comic potential in ‘The Other Guys’. This is described as a “hard R” comedy. [Critics: 69%] [Public: 7.1] – Ranked: 2nd Best
The Watch
Starring: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Richard Ayoade
Director: Akiva Schaffer
Out: 27 July 2012

The community-conscious manager of a local Costco store (Stiller) sets up a neighbourhood watch to help solve a murder, but finds the participants (Vaughn, Hill, Ayoade) only want to relax and have a good time. The group’s mundane investigation becomes more eventful when they stumble onto an alien plot to take over the world. The R-rated comedy sci-fi has hints of last year’s ‘Attack The Block’, only that was much better. This was 2012′s biggest disappointment for me, it has a terrific comic cast, but they’re on autopilot and struggling with a script by Seth Rogen that’s purile and lazily plotted. The core idea, a sort of ‘Ghostbusters’-lite, could really have worked had they given it to someone who could be bothered. The Lonely Island videos are genius, it’s hard to believe it’s the same director, he had absolutely nothing to offer here. [Critics: 17%] [Public: 5.7] – Mediocre
The Campaign
Starring: Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, Brian Cox
Director: Jay Roach
Out: 10 August 2012

Timed to coincide with the 2012 US election, this is a comedy about two warring politicians (Ferrell and Galifianakis) in a small congressional district in South Carolina. It’s also a comment on the circus of modern day politics. From the director of ‘Dinner For Schmucks’, ‘Austin Powers’ and a couple of excellent TV movies about politics (‘Game Change’, ‘Recount’). Ferrell and Galifianakis are both on good form. The more you follow U.S. politics, the more you’ll get out of it. It’s well informed fun and has a good point to make about what’s broken. [Critics: 66%] [Public: 6.4] – Ranked: 10th Best
For A Good Time, Call…
Starring: Ari Graynor, Lauren Miller, Justin Long, Mimi Rogers
Director: Jamie Travis
Out: 31 August 2012

[Critics: 56%] [Public: 5.8] – Mediocre

I’m up for The Watch mostly cause my friend plays the alien and he’s funny as hell.
A Fantastic Fear of Everything grabs my interest … but that’s about it. Everything else feels done before.
Ooh, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro in a movie together again? That alone makes Silver Linings interesting, I thought Limitless was great.
2012 comedy movies I want to see more than anything: The Dictator, The Watch, The Campaign.
I hadn’t heard about ‘Jeff Who Lives At Home’ but it sounds my kind of film.
You say that Simon Pegg is weaker the further away from himself he plays. I thought he was pretty good in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. What do people think? Is the MI part very like the real Simon Pegg?
When’s Hot Fuzz coming out in the theatres? I heard it’s a really great movie, and would sure like to see it. Anyone know anything about it? Surely going to be up in the best of 2012.
And what about 2012? Heard that’s good too, and coming out this special year.
If anyone knows anything about these, would be great.
Hot Fuzz is an old movie and i think the only way to see it is to rent it or download it but its hilarious!
How come Exotic Marigold Hotel isn’t on the list? I saw a trailer for it yesterday and it looked like a comedy to me. It’s got a great cast – does anyone know anything else about it?
Went to see Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on Saturday. It has an amazing cast and a passable story line (I was reminded a bit of a Richard Curtis type-film with all the interweaving love plot lines) but I wouldn’t class it as a great film. It didn’t require much brain power (which was nice after a long week at work), but equally I didn’t leave the cinema thrilled.
21 jump street best moive ever!!!, must see!!!. I love it and its also crack up
That’s My Boy was awesome! Found myself laughing every 2 minutes in the show.
