Comedy Movies 2012 – Guide
1.01.12 # Comedy Movies # 44 CommentsThis Is 40
Starring: Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Albert Brooks, Megan Fox, Jason Segal
Director: Judd Apatow
Out: 21 December 2012

Knocked Up spin-off focusing on a story from Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie’s (Leslie Mann) current life. Director Apatow says audiences really responded to their characters and their problems so he wanted to explore further ground with them. I’m sure it has nothing to do with Apatow being married to Mann. This is Apatow’s second movie about being forty. Megan Fox has been given a big role, which always carries its risks. Jason Segal is returning briefly as the inappropriate stoner from ‘Knocked Up’. All we know plot-wise is that Pete now runs a record label, Fox’s character won’t come between him and Debbie, and that the couple are coming to terms with life over the hill. I’m sure Apatow will create something worthy of a ticket. [Critics: 52%] [Public: 6.3] – Mixed Reaction
Parental Guidance
Starring: Billy Crystal, Bette Midler, Marisa Tomei, Tom Everett Scott
Director: Andy Fickman
Out: 25 December 2012

A minor league baseball broadcaster (Crystal) and his estranged soon-to-be-ex wife (Midler) find themselves in charge of their three grandkids when their daughter goes away for work. Grandpa starts out with 21st century methods of childcare but soon is forced to resort to an old-school style of parenting. With this cast, it feels like the 80s again. I’m not convinced Crystal and Midler can still carry a movie, but it’s nice to see oldies getting a shot. The director’s track record (‘You Again’, ‘Race to Witch Mountain’, ‘The Game Plan’) suggests very family-friendly material that won’t be big on laughs. [Critics: 19%] [Public: 5.8] – Mediocre
The Guilt Trip
Starring: Seth Rogen, Barbra Streisand, Yvonne Strahovski, Colin Hanks, Adam Scott
Director: Anne Fletcher
Out: 25 December 2012

An inventor (Rogen) invites his mother (Streisand) on a cross-country trip as he tries to sell his new product, while also reuniting her with a lost love. It’s a buddy comedy with a mother and son – unusual, and a nice idea – Rogen and Streisand are very much a double act. From the director of ‘The Proposal’, and the writer of ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’. Streisand last tackled mainstream comedy in the ‘Fockers’ series. This could appeal to two very different demographics, or not be targeted enough for either. [Critics: 37%] [Public: 5.6] – Mediocre

I’m up for The Watch mostly cause my friend plays the alien and he’s funny as hell.
A Fantastic Fear of Everything grabs my interest … but that’s about it. Everything else feels done before.
Ooh, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro in a movie together again? That alone makes Silver Linings interesting, I thought Limitless was great.
2012 comedy movies I want to see more than anything: The Dictator, The Watch, The Campaign.
I hadn’t heard about ‘Jeff Who Lives At Home’ but it sounds my kind of film.
You say that Simon Pegg is weaker the further away from himself he plays. I thought he was pretty good in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. What do people think? Is the MI part very like the real Simon Pegg?
When’s Hot Fuzz coming out in the theatres? I heard it’s a really great movie, and would sure like to see it. Anyone know anything about it? Surely going to be up in the best of 2012.
And what about 2012? Heard that’s good too, and coming out this special year.
If anyone knows anything about these, would be great.
Hot Fuzz is an old movie and i think the only way to see it is to rent it or download it but its hilarious!
How come Exotic Marigold Hotel isn’t on the list? I saw a trailer for it yesterday and it looked like a comedy to me. It’s got a great cast – does anyone know anything else about it?
Went to see Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on Saturday. It has an amazing cast and a passable story line (I was reminded a bit of a Richard Curtis type-film with all the interweaving love plot lines) but I wouldn’t class it as a great film. It didn’t require much brain power (which was nice after a long week at work), but equally I didn’t leave the cinema thrilled.
