Action Movies 2012 – Guide
1.01.12 # Action Movies # 29 CommentsThe Avengers
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo
Director: Joss Whedon
Out: 4th May 2012

Summer begins with the biggest crossover movie ever made. The all-star line-up includes Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury, Black Widow, and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). Mark Ruffalo is replacing Ed Norton as The Hulk. They’re all fighting Thor’s brother Loki and, presumably, the Skrull army he helps invade earth. It’ll be fascinating to see how the lead characters are balanced and how they play off each other, it really does feel like something unique is happening. Director Joss Whedon has a daunting task on his hands. [Critics: 92%] [Public: 8.4] – Excellent
Battleship
Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, Rihanna, Liam Neeson
Director: Peter Berg
Out: 18th May 2012

A small fleet of naval ships on exercise off the Hawaiian islands finds itself pitted against an alien force intent on building a dangerous power source in the ocean. The movie will apparently show the battle from both the human and alien perspectives, which sounds ballsy. The set-up and visual style do everything they can to appear like a Michael Bay movie, hoping to catch a fraction of the Transformers crowd. It’s based on the board game, but would actually be getting people more excited were it not. 1985′s Clue showed that you can make a good movie based on a board game, and Pirates Of The Caribbean was based on a theme park ride, but this seems sillier because it’s not being played tongue in cheek. Also casting Rihanna isn’t helping its credibility. At least a futuristic war movie set at sea is original and offers a spectacle not seen before. [Critics: 34%] [Public: 6.0] – Mediocre
Men In Black 3
Starring: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Rip Torn, Emma Thompson
Director: Barry Sonnenfeld
Out: 25th May 2012

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones return, as does director Sonnenfeld. This one’s a 3D time travel plot with Agent J (Smith) having to go back to the 60s to visit, and protect, a younger Agent K (Brolin playing Jones). Emma Thompson is an agent in the modern day, a secretary played by Alice Eve in the 60s. Jemaine Clement and Nicole Scherzinger are villains. Bill Hader is Andy Warhol. There have been numerous rumours that the production has been a bit of a mess. Let’s pray it’s a MIB, not a MIB II. The concept is still a great one and there’s no reason it can’t have some wild and inventive storytelling. Can’t believe it will have been 10 years since Men In Black 2. [Critics: 69%] [Public: 7.0] – Very Good
Snow White And The Huntsman
Starring: Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Ian McShane
Director: Rupert Sanders
Out: 1st June 2012

This reimagining sees the Huntsman (Hemsworth) ordered to take Snow White (Stewart) into the woods to be killed, but instead winding up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen (Theron). The dwarves are a who’s who of British acting talent – Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Stephen Graham, Eddie Izzard, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost – and yes there are eight, which means one gets killed probably. Tonally this is a dark fantasy adventure movie. There’s another Snow White movie out in March called Mirror Mirror, which is a ghastly-looking kids’ version. This actually has an excellent trailer and may well surprise the doubters. Part of a planned trilogy. [Critics: 49%] [Public: 6.3] – Decent
The Amazing Spider-Man
Starring: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen
Director: Marc Webb
Out: 3rd July 2012

Spider-Man gets a slightly uncalled for reboot that takes him back to high school. 27-year-old Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) is the new Peter Parker and Mary Jane is nowhere to be seen, replaced by Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone). This time Spider-Man has to face down against the Lizard (Ifans) and the “Proto-Goblin,” (Khan) a test subject of Norman Osborn’s experimentations. Martin Sheen is Uncle Ben, who presumably has to be shot dead again. The director of 500 Days Of Summer takes over from trilogy director Sam Raimi. They’re also going for a much lower budget, so expect more character work, less morphing sand. [Critics: 73%] [Public: 7.5] – Very Good
The Dark Knight Rises
Starring: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Director: Christopher Nolan
Out: 20th July 2012

It was a brave move naming a Batman film ‘The Dark Knight’, since it didn’t have the word ‘Batman’ in it. There’s nothing bold about the title here. That aside, this is easily one of the year′s highlights. The plot involves the whole of Gotham descending into anarchy and mob rule, while Batman is put out of action. Tom Hardy looks imposing as Bane but his vocals seem hard to follow, Anne Hathaway plays an angry-looking Catwoman who appears to steal from the rich because she has a chip on her shoulder, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a beat cop and Marion Cotillard plays a Wayne Enterprises board member. Director Christopher Nolan has made it clear this is the final chapter for his Batman, so expect fireworks and major character death, probably.[Critics: 87%] [Public: 8.8] – Excellent

Okay, no joke, the Clash (Wrath, Bath, Math) of the Titans sequel look pretty damn fun. Can’t believe the sequel looks so much better than the original … though still not “good” in an objective sense.
The Lockout trailer rocks my balls off!
Holy crap.
LOOPER! I love that director, it’s going to rock.
Django, Skyfall … the list goes on. 2012 looks like a VERY good year for action adventure, all these movies look like a blast.
Let’s get real. The Avengers will be the best action movie of 2012. It’s all the stars of the most enjoyable action films of the last five years put into the same one. No brainer. The Dark Knight Rises can’t possibly live up the The Dark Knight. Bane is no Joker.
Dude, I believe you haven’t seen The Expendables 2 yet.
Nice list and some I’m actually looking forward to but whats with ‘The unfairly maligned McG’, really? he has a worse CV than Schumacher so i’m hoping that was a typo.
He became a figure of hate after Charlie’s Angels, now it doesn’t matter what he does, the fanboy community won’t give him a break. Terminator Salvation wasn’t half as bad as it was claimed to be.
Thats true but mostly justified, here is a guy who, regardless of quality still gets to spend millions of other peoples money when all we film watchers want is a good movie. Terminator Salvation wasn’t terrible but he had everything at his disposal to make it the film it should’ve been but he blew it. Until he makes a ‘Phone Booth’ he will continue to find himself vilified.
I am seriously looking forward to TDKR and Safe, if it lets Statham flex a little more than his biceps like you say
I think McG’s movies are average, not dreadful, is what I’m saying. He’s only directed 4 in his life and 3 of them were ok. Schumacher’s directed 23.
4! is that all? thank god for small mercies
2012 looks very good for action films, alot of these are pretty interesting. The last film that had ‘Sweet Dreams’ by Marilyn Manson playing in the trailer was one of the worst I’ve ever seen(Gamer) I dont have any high hopes for Wrath Of Titans..
Looks much better than the comedy selection, especially Safe House, Looper and Django Unchained.
The 2012 action movies I’m looking forward to most are Lockout, Total Recall and The Dark Knight Rises.
I think this time for the expendables, they have make it. With the coming of vanne damm and chuck norris means the best movie ever. Lets hope so
I’m so excited to watch this new spider man. It seems interesting
What? No The Raid: Redemption??? I’m outta here!
Have been meaning to add it. It’s there now.
I think the best action movie of 2012 was transformers 3 dark side of the moon
The best of trilogy
That one was last year.
i must say nice collection and nice work.
It’s not only a good year in movies, also in games.
I’m gonna spent al my money on all good games and movies that are gonna come this year!
The Expendables pile of crap, they must use a template for the story
