Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked – Soundtrack18.12.11 # Soundtrack # 2 Comments
The Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked soundtrack. How do you know that the flush of youth has fully washed away. Is it when bending your knees becomes an audio as well as visual event? Actually, the true indicator you’re getting old is when you find you can’t recognise the songs that the Chipmunks are taking off in their trademark helium squeak. See, last time I danced with showbiz’s premier furry mother-funkers, reviewing the soundtrack to 2009’s The Squeakquel, I was still on safe ground; with high-pitched versions of Foreigner, Dead Or Alive and the Bee Gees, I knew precisely where I was.
Spin on just two years, to the soundtrack of 20th Century Fox’s third Chipmunks movie, Chipwrecked, and suddenly I’m more lost than a blind man dropped square in the sun-scorched centre of the Sahara Desert. Exhibit A: Party Rock Anthem! Er, exsqueeze me? That’s no anthem to any party I want to be a part of. Can we try something else please?
Exhibit B: You want me to what? Whip your hair?! Your hair, really? That stringy stuff on top of your head – you want to whip that? Whatever, weirdo. Apparently Whip Your Hair is a song originally by Willow Smith, a revelation which only makes me feel even more out of touch. See, I didn’t even know Mr. Nice Clean Rap had had the snip. Not so Big Willy now, eh?
To be honest, even the few fragments of the Chipwrecked soundtrack I was able to recognise made me distinctly uneasy. For instance, I can see why the idea of the Chipmunks and their designated concubines, the Chipettes, covering Lady Gaga might seem like a mild hoot of an idea. But in practice, hearing a tiny childlike voice trill “I want your ugly, I want your disease,” just seems as plain wrong as that Chipmunks vs. Expendables movie that Nu Image/Millennium are currently so hot for (I’ve seen a leaked script and, suffice to say, fur flies).
In fairness, it’s not all quite so filth-drenched and unhealthy; the Go-Go’s’ Vacation and Pink’s Trouble were already cartoon songs to start with, therefore marking them as perfect fodder for the Chipmunks to sink their pointy little gnashers into. But the sense of fun seems diluted by a desperate desire for contemporary commercial appeal, a point underlined by an end-of-record mash-up between Katy Perry and Gaga again.
Most unthinkably of all, there’s even a song here not elucidated by either the Chipmunks or the Chipettes, being instead an incongruously pedestrian R ‘n’ B number by someone called Rae. Who they? They not small and furry. They no belong here. Chipmunks… attack!
