Thriller Movies 2012 – Guide

New: Top 20 Best Thriller Movies - 2012 (List) Thrillers are the movies that put you on the edge of your seat. They’re about suspense, excitement, mystery, crime, and the psychological.

We’re going to take a look at the biggest and best thriller movies of 2012. So draw the blinds and prepare to discover danger.

Man On A Ledge
Out: 27 January 2012 (U.S. Dates)
Director: Asger Leth
Starring: Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris

New: Top 20 Best Thriller Movies 2012
An ex-cop and now wanted fugitive (Worthington) stands on the ledge of a high-rise building while a hard-living New York Police Department hostage negotiator (Banks) tries to talk him out of suicide. But perhaps he has an ulterior motive for being there… Expect twists and turns. It’s a considerably more enjoyable movie if you don’t know any more than is written here (avoid the trailer). Sam Worthington gives a passionate performance but is let down by the silliness of the plot thread involving Jamie Bell and Genesis Rodriguez. Overall it would have impacted more as a true one-location thriller ala ‘Phone Booth’. [Critics (via Rotten Tomatoes): 32%] [Public (via IMDB): 6.6]

The Grey
Out: 27 January 2012
Director: Joe Carnahan
Starring: Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo

Top 20 Best Thriller Movie - 2012
Testosterone-fuelled survival thriller about an unruly group of oil-rig roughnecks who are stranded in the remote Alaskan wilds when their plane crashes. Battling mortal injuries and merciless weather, the survivors have only a few days to escape the icy elements and a deadly pack of wolves who see them as intruders. From the director of ‘The A-Team’ and ‘Smoking Aces’, this has a fantastic performance from Neeson, who is getting better and better with age, and terrific atmosphere, but once it settles in it’s quite predictable (every obstacle will pick off one survivor) and ultimately it’s extremely bleak. [Critics: 79%] [Public: 6.8]

Kill List
Out: 3 February 2012
Director: Ben Wheatley
Starring: Neil Maskell, MyAnna Buring, Harry Simpson

Top 20 Best Thriller Movie - 2012
[Critics: 76%] [Public: 6.2]

Seeking Justice
Out: 16 March 2012
Director: Roger Donaldson
Starring: Nicolas Cage, Guy Pearce, January Jones, Jennifer Carpenter

Top 20 Best Thriller Films 2012
When his wife is violently assaulted, a high school teacher (Cage) enlists the services of a vigilante group (led by Guy Pearce) to help him settle the score. But once they do, they demand a favour in return… Imagine ‘Death Wish’ with a few plot twists. This is one of Cage’s better movies of recent years, his performance is phoned-in, but it’s propped up by Pearce in sinister mode, a decent script and a solid director (‘The Bank Job’, ‘Thirteen Days’). [Critics: 25%] [Public: 6.1]

The Hunter
Out: 6 April 2012
Director: Daniel Nettheim
Starring: Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill, Frances O’Connor

[Critics: 70%] [Public: 6.7]

Out: 27 April 2012
Director: Morten Tyldum
Starring: Aksel Hennie, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Julie Ølgaard

Best Thriller Movies 2012
An accomplished headhunter, who feathers his nest by stealing expensive artworks from his clients, risks everything to obtain a valuable painting owned by a former mercenary. When this ‘one last job’ goes wrong he finds himself in a brutal game of cat-and-mouse against the last man you want to be doing battle with. Based on the best-selling novel and a smash-hit in Norway, this has drawn comparisons to the path taken by ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’. ‘Headhunters’ is more Tarantino-esque though, combining violence, drama and jet-black humour. See our full review for more. [Critics: 92%] [Public: 7.5]

Out: 6 July 2012
Director: Oliver Stone
Starring: Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Blake Lively, John Travolta

Best Thriller Movies 2012
When their shared hippie girlfriend (Lively) is kidnapped, two successful marijuana growers, one a graduate (Johnson), the other a former U.S. Navy SEAL (Kitsch), confront a Mexican drug cartel to rescue her. Travolta plays a DEA agent. Thurman plays the girl’s mother. Salma Hayek plays the leader of the cartel. Benicio del Toro is her henchman. The cast and synopsis sound like a comedy, but this is a drama-thriller by Oliver Stone, based on the recent novel. Stone is still an exciting director and always has something to say, even in his misfires (‘Wall Street 2’). [Critics: 51%] [Public: 6.5]

The Grey looks awesome. And I love the title “Cold Light of Day” but the plot sounds so boring.

Man on a Ledge looks pathetic, unless the tagline is “After surviving snakes on a plane, now he is a man on a ledge.”

One (potentially) interesting thing about Man on a Ledge is that some of it wasn’t green-screened but was actually the actors up there.

‘On a Ledge gave away too much of its plot, if the people in charge of the marketing team (producer’s?) were able to lead onto the plot twists more subtly there probably wouldn’t be what I expect are thousands of people who already feel like they’ve seen it.
