Top 20 Best Romantic Movies Of 2012
19.01.12 # Romantic Movies # 12 CommentsTitanic 3D
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane
Director: James Cameron
Out: 6th April 2012

“Neeear. Faaaar. Wherever you arrre.” Don’t pretend you didn’t cry. The biggest grossing movie of all time (until Avatar) returns with the top end 3D conversion treatment. James Cameron is overseeing this whole thing personally so you can be sure he won’t let a shoddy 3D product slip through. How will world audiences respond to this second time round? It’s a movie that feels, strangely, of its time. I guess this means Kate Winslet will be nude in 3D, wonder how she feels about that. [Critics: 87%] [Public: 7.6]
The Lucky One
Starring: Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Jay R. Ferguson, Blythe Danner
Director: Scott Hicks
Out: 20th April 2012

A marine (Efron) travels to North Carolina after serving three tours in Iraq and searches for the unknown woman he believes was his good luck charm during the war. Despite her initial mistrust, and complications in her life from being a divorcee with a son, a romance develops between them. This is based on the 2008 novel by Nicholas Sparks, the prolific author of the likes of The Notebook and Dear John. In fact, this is his seventh movie. Some have doubts that Efron can shake his Disney background to play a convincing marine, but he’s an underrated actor. From the director of Shine and No Reservations, this looks a lot like Dear John. Think Like A Man
Starring: Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Meagan Good, Kevin Hart, Regina Hall
Director: Tim Story
Out: 20th April 2012

Four African-American men have their love lives shaken up when the women they are pursuing read a relationship-advice book and start “acting like a lady while thinking like a man”. The men soon decide to turn the tables. The story takes its cues from an actual self-help book of the same name, written by a guy who’s been divorced twice. The trailer has some good laughs, a fun vibe and a fair amount of charm. From the director of Barbershop and Taxi. Lightning rod of hate Chris Brown has a supporting role. [Critics: 54%] [Public: 6.0]
The Five-Year Engagement
Starring: Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt, Alison Brie, Rhys Ifans
Director: Nicholas Stoller
Out: 27th April 2012

Beginning where most romantic comedies end, this charts the ups and downs of an engaged couple’s relationship (Segal, Blunt) and how something that starts out so strong can change over time. From the trailer it looks like it’s the woman delaying the wedding for her career and the guy wants to get on with it – only in the movies, eh. Produced by Judd Apatow and from the director of the excellent Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. This looks less interesting than both of those, but on his past record he has to be given the benefit of the doubt. The writers (Segal and the director) say they were strongly influenced by When Harry Met Sally and how it handled a relationship that spanned many years. [Critics: 64%] [Public: 6.3]
LOL
Starring: Miley Cyrus, Demi Moore, Adam Sevani, Ashley Greene, Thomas Jane
Director: Lisa Azuelos
Out: 4th May 2012

In a world connected by YouTube, iTunes, Movie-Moron and Facebook, Lola (Miley Cyrus) is navigating the peer pressures of high school romance and friendship. When her mom (Demi Moore) accidentally-on-purpose reads her racy journal, she realizes just how wide their communication gap has grown. Cue ‘hilarious’ and ‘heartfelt’ coming of age moments between mom and daughter, as daughter tries to nail Adam Sevani from the Step Up movies. This is a remake of the French teen comedy-romance, from the same director. The trailer doesn’t have a single laugh in it. Might appeal to teenagers. [Critics: 20%] [Public: 3.6]
What To Expect When You’re Expecting
Starring: Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Anna Kendrick
Director: Kirk Jones
Out: 18th May 2012

Romantic-comedy based loosely on the best-selling self-help book, which looks at the lives of four couples as they prepare to become parents. Lopez plays a woman who adopts from abroad after difficulty conceiving. Banks is an author militant in her beliefs about what makes a good mother until she gets pregnant for the first time. Kendrick reunites with an old flame and fellow food-truck owner and becomes pregnant. This is a large ensemble, no doubt inspired by the success of Valentine’s Day. Though with the director of Everybody’s Fine and Nanny McPhee on board, this should be a more intelligent and amusing movie. [Critics: 22%] [Public: 5.4]
Bel Ami
Starring: Robert Pattinson, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci
Directors: Declan Donnellan, Nick Ormerod
Out: 8th June 2012

A penniless ex-soldier (Pattinson) scales the social ladder in 19th century Paris by manipulating the hearts of its most influential and wealthy women (Thurman, Scott Thomas, Ricci etc.). Based on the 1885 French novel, there’s more than a touch of Dangerous Liaisons in this R-rated tale of ambition, power and seduction. It’ll be interesting to see how Twilight fans take to Pattinson playing such an amoral character, deliberately screwing women over. And there’s an orgy scene. Pattinson sure does like period romances when he’s not being a vampire. [Critics: 20%] [Public: 5.3]

The lineup looks very similar to last year.
I hope that ‘Friends with Kids’ will be quirky/cool like Juno – it is the story outline that most interests me from the 2012 romantic films. Though I worry the still frame above looks filled with fake over-hammed expression. Hope I’m proved wrong and it’s a decent watch.
If you want predictable go for romantic movies and romantic comedies. 2012 is no exception. It’s a genre for sappy women with unrealistic expectations. Wake up!
My favorite 3 are:
•Step Up 4
•The Lucky One
•This Means War
My best – This means war
– Friends with kids
– Perfect Sense
