Joel Kinnaman Confirmed For ‘RoboCop’ Reboot

RoboCop Remake - Lead Actor Casting
The RoboCop reboot has its lead! Joel Kinnaman, best known for US TV drama The Killing, has been confirmed to star as the merciless cyborg tasked with cleaning up futuristic and crime-ridden Detroit.

The Swedish actor has enjoyed success in supporting roles in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Safe House in the last year. He has also recently starred in Swedish crime thriller Snabba Cash (from the director of Safe House), with the sequel set for release this year.

Ultra-violent and tongue in cheek, the original RoboCop starred Peter Weller and spawned two sequels and a short-lived (and pretty terrible) TV series. Weller played RoboCop for the first two films, and got out of the franchise just in time as it really lost its way…

It’s exciting to see Robo returning, but don’t expect any of the futuristic commercial snippets that added to the fun of the original (“I’d buy that for a dollar!”). It really was the definitive 80s sci-fi action movie, possibly alongside Total Recall which is ironically also being remade/rebooted and due for release this year.

The director had this to say of the plot –

“In the first RoboCop, Murphy is gunned down then you see some hospitals and stuff and then you cut to him as RoboCop. My movie is between those two cuts. How do you make RoboCop? How do you slowly bring a guy to be a robot? How do you actually take humanity out of someone and how do you program a brain, so to speak, and how does that affect an individual?”

He means cyborg. Hopefully this emphasis on the building stage isn’t at the expense of a slick, violent action-packed production.

Can Joel Kinnaman, in his first major lead, carry such a potentially big franchise?

Wasn’t Michael C. Hall being considered for RoboCop? I could only wish he would play RC.

We reported that he was likely. The reason we did that was because a well known Hollywood artist was commissioned to do concept art for the studio of Michael C.Hall in the role, the only person he was asked to do. Why C.Hall wasn’t chosen in the end we will never know. It seems right now like he would have been the more interesting choice.

The original Robocop & Total Recall founded on genius director Paul Verhoeven and really badass actors like Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith and ED209(!).

I worry that the remake will fail in both director and cast…
