The Avengers 2 – Sequel Plans

There’s been some Avengers 2 talk over recent weeks, so what has been said and what direction is the sequel likely to go in?
The Avengers is shaping up to be an enormous financial hit. After just two days at the foreign box office it’s taken $36 million and broken records, including the third biggest opening day in British history. In the US, it’s tracking at one and a half times the pre-sales of all other Marvel Studio movies – combined. Which means it’s going to open somewhere in the range of $160-200 million. Audiences have rated it an extremely high 9.0 on IMDB, and 96% of critics like it or love it. I’ve seen the movie, and it has a much higher rewatchability than other superhero adventures – expect significant repeat viewings after a huge opening.
All of which means a very large financial incentive to press forward on a sequel. So what can we expect from The Avengers 2? Firstly it will almost certainly add to the team. Stan Lee doesn’t have creative input but he’s said he’d like to see Black Panther, Dr. Strange or Ant-Man join up. There’s been an Ant-Man standalone movie in development for some time, and more recently a Dr. Strange movie is on the boil. Ant-Man and Wasp seem like very likely additions as they have been an almost permanent feature of Avengers comics in recent years. Don’t expect to see Spider-Man join though, as those movie rights are likely to stay at Sony for a considerable time.
Producer Kevin Feige is in creative charge of the movies and says that Marvel’s upcoming movies will fit together as another set of films leading up to the Avengers sequel. Iron Man 3 “will be the first of what we refer to as phase two of this saga, that will culminate in Avengers 2.” He also mentioned that a Dr. Strange movie could well fit into this second phase. All of which means that the Avengers follow-up won’t hit theaters until 2014 at the very earliest, with 2015 more likely.
Who will be the villain? **AVENGERS SPOILER** The Avengers end credit scene introduces us to Thanos, who smiles when he’s told that to attack Earth is to “court death”. Thanos in the comics is fascinated with death and nihilism. He kills millions on his home planet with nuclear bombardment before travelling to earth. He is capable of superhuman strength and can absorb and project vast quantities of cosmic energy, enough to obliterate planets. His most famous storyline sees him gain possession of the Infinity Gauntlet, recently glimpsed in the Thor movie (in Odin’s trophy room). Each gem of that gauntlet grants its bearer complete mastery over one aspect of the universe: Time, Space, Mind, Soul, Reality, or Power. ** END SPOILER **
Update: Aug 2013 – The movie will be called The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, with Ultron as the main villain. He will be voiced by James Spader. Ultron is a robotic artificial intelligence overwhelmed with a god complex and a rage toward his creators, who longs to take over the Earth with his own spawn. Tony Stark is likely to be involved in his creation, and Ultron may be a corrupted version of the Jarvis AI. Whedon says, “He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff.” Whedon also indicates that some of his abilities from the comics will be stripped.
The official plotline is: ‘As the US Government create a force, known as Ultron, The Avengers are told they are not needed any longer. But when Ultron turns against Humanity, it’s time for The Avengers to assemble yet again for their most dangerous challenge ever.’
Thanos will be the mastermind villain in the upcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy movie but will also make appearances in Marvel films after that, so could still play some role in The Avengers sequel.
Confirmed new team members are brother/sister act Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Whedon explains his reasoning, “One of the problems I had on the first one was everybody basically had punchy powers. [Quicksilver]’s got super speed. [Scarlet Witch] can weave spells and a little telekinesis, get inside your head. There’s good stuff they can do that will help keep it fresh.
The release date is May 1st, 2015.
What would you like to see happen in an Avengers sequel? Who should join the team? What do you think of Ultron as the villain? Are you happy with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch as the new additions? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
The one apeared in the credit looks like Red Skull
ok i work at a movie theatre and am a huge marvel fan and im sorry to say that at the end of the credits it was not thanos or at least didnt look like him it looked the most like super skrull which would make the make the most sense after marvel shot themselves in the foot by making the human torch captain america and counting out any avengers fantastic four mashing just my opinion
You are incorrect. It was indeed Thanos at the end credits, who smiled after being told news about the humans. The actor who plays him is Damion Poitier, a good friend of mine. He is credited as playing Man #1, so that no spoilers are given. It is too early to know if Thanos will be the main villain in Avengers 2, or if Damion will play him, but it was most definitely Thanos.
THANOS IS INDEED THE VILLIAN IN AVENGERS 2 HE MAKES A PRESCENCE IN THOR 2 BUT HE IS THE MAIN VILLIAN IN GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
Maybe Loki will be in The Avengers Sequel if Thanos is.
That should be an interesting sequel, just like the first installment did. Id like to see that spider man will be joining the group in the 2nd installment its because the scene in suburban new york and peter parker lives in that area and in the 1st film he should be in the movie because its spider mans new york yard but though i love hulk being in the big city coz if you notice all of hes film scenes located in the isolated mountain so thats one good reason why i love the avengers, and my disappoinment is that theres no war machine in the movie were he should be included in that story were he was always on the defense on the side of ironman, but obviously its one of the unbelievable film in this generation. Hope in the second installment there should be an ant man and spiderman because they’re part of avengers eversince.
To correct you, Spider-Man was part of the New Avengers so it wouldn’t be logical for him to be in it. However, Sony did say if the new spider-man movie is a flop then it will sign him back to Marvel who say if that happens they will try to put him in it. So there’s a chance that u will get your request but it’s highly unlikely
I would like to see Ant man and wasp
maybe in the third installment spiderman may join the team
Coulson should return. No body = no death!
Coulson’s alive. He’s one of the main characters in Agents of Shield, Marvel’s new tv series. It’s coming on ABC I believe
The Avengers sequel should consist of Thanos overcoming the Avengers ,leaving the Avengers fighting for there lives, the earth is left in a sate of darkness . To which Doctor strange could use his mystical powers to combat Thanos.Thanos should however transport the Hulk into another dimension which would mean Doctor strange would have to bring the Hulk back to earth the help the Avengers bring the earth back to normality. The hulk should not be out of the movie to long as he plays a major part in the movie .Anyway thats my thoughts on the matter ,cant wait for the sequel !!!! I thoroughly enjoyed The Avengers movie.
Spiderman, luke cage, silver surfer, fantastic 4 and blade should join the avengers and I want Thanos and galactus and, er, hellboy (kidding)….
Seeing as I called the plot of Avengers as soon as I heard “aliens” (i said it’d be like the ultimate avengers cartoon movies, 2006) i’m going to say that they’ll keep the theme and go with the black panther story line; instead of aliens, they’ll use thanos. There will be an Avengers 2.
They definitely need Wasp, Ant Man and Black Panther in the Avengers sequel but instead of Thanos as the main villain they should have Ultron ( maybe Masters of Evil? ). So it could be more smaller and personal like Joss said in a recent interview. So I think for the whole big Avengers finale since everyone likes trilogies, they can have Thanos the biggest and boldest villain for the Avengers to fight also I think Ms. Marvel and Dr. Strange maybe the vision should join by the third movie. But that means they are going to have to get rid of a couple of people… Well thats how I think they should do it.
SENTRY
I don’t even wanna see the sequal cuz this one wasn’t all that great and I love action moviez. This one could have been way better.
@Sony – Dude, what did you even go and watch at the cinema? Cause it definitely wasn’t the Avengers – That was the best superhero/action movie I’ve ever seen in my life – A sequel HAS to happen
You’re just mad because Spiderman wasn’t on there… but what you don’t realize is that it’s YOUR FAULT, “SONY”!
Love the movie. @Sony, if u happen to dislike it watch an action movie not a SUPERHERO action movie, its quite different u know. Anyways, ANT-MAN, WASPS, BLACK PANTHER & VISION shoulde be injected into The Avengers 2. As for the main villian it should be the SKRULL & KHREE EMPRIES and the Avengers need to join forces with the FANTASTIC FOUR & SILVER SURFUR (Tho it will be hard for CAP to be CAP since he’s also the HUMAN TORCH).
Not necessarily, since there’s a Fantastic Four reboot in the works.
For everyone wishing for an Avengers/Spider-Man/X-Men/Fantastic 4 mashup . . .
KEEP WISHING! Disney/Marvel do not have the rights to produce a movie based on Spider-Man(belongs to Sony) X-Men, or Fantastic Four (both belong to Fox) Marvel/Disney have only the movie rights to the cast of Avengers and any Marvel characters that don’t already have movies made of them.
The only way Marvel will get the movie rights to Spider-Man, X-Men, or Fantastic Four would be in Sony/Fox stopped making movies of them.
They won’t.
War Machine should appear in The Avengers 2 along with Black Panther and maybe Avengers 3 should have Red Skull, The Leader (or The Abomination), Loki and The Mandarin (or somebody like Whirlwind) and/or Thanos team up against the Avengers if Marvel chooses to go down that route.
I believe War Machine will be Iron Man’s “sidekick” once again in Iron Man 3 and then will make his team debut in Avengers 2. The only reason he wasn’t in the first Avengers was so 1) He didn’t steal Iron Man’s thunder and 2) He is an easy one to introduce in the next Avengers movie, unlike some of these other debatable characters who are yet to make their Hollywood debut.
damn! it’d be great to see spiderman, human torch, wolverine and quicksilver join the next avengers movie.
When Thanos and the Skrulls are bearly arriving to Earth, Silver Surfer who survived the explotion sees him and warns the Avengers and Fantastic Four who then get involved with the problem so they ask Silver Surfer for help he agrees and together they fight when they think they could be out numbered the Kree get involved to fight the Skrulls and Thanos creates a cosmic cloud that attracts Galactus who i dont think he’s death to join the fight.
The return Of Coulson for sure! And I would love to see the Skrull/ Chitauri as villains in the avengers 2.
