The Avengers 2 – Sequel Plans

The Avengers 2 - Sequel Plans (Plot, Villain) (Avengers Assemble 2)
There’s been some Avengers 2 talk over recent weeks, so what has been said and what direction is the sequel likely to go in?

The Avengers is shaping up to be an enormous financial hit. After just two days at the foreign box office it’s taken $36 million and broken records, including the third biggest opening day in British history. In the US, it’s tracking at one and a half times the pre-sales of all other Marvel Studio movies – combined. Which means it’s going to open somewhere in the range of $160-200 million. Audiences have rated it an extremely high 9.0 on IMDB, and 96% of critics like it or love it. I’ve seen the movie, and it has a much higher rewatchability than other superhero adventures – expect significant repeat viewings after a huge opening.

All of which means a very large financial incentive to press forward on a sequel. So what can we expect from The Avengers 2? Firstly it will almost certainly add to the team. Stan Lee doesn’t have creative input but he’s said he’d like to see Black Panther, Dr. Strange or Ant-Man join up. There’s been an Ant-Man standalone movie in development for some time, and more recently a Dr. Strange movie is on the boil. Ant-Man and Wasp seem like very likely additions as they have been an almost permanent feature of Avengers comics in recent years. Don’t expect to see Spider-Man join though, as those movie rights are likely to stay at Sony for a considerable time.

Producer Kevin Feige is in creative charge of the movies and says that Marvel’s upcoming movies will fit together as another set of films leading up to the Avengers sequel. Iron Man 3 “will be the first of what we refer to as phase two of this saga, that will culminate in Avengers 2.” He also mentioned that a Dr. Strange movie could well fit into this second phase. All of which means that the Avengers follow-up won’t hit theaters until 2014 at the very earliest, with 2015 more likely.

Who will be the villain? **AVENGERS SPOILER** The Avengers end credit scene introduces us to Thanos, who smiles when he’s told that to attack Earth is to “court death”. Thanos in the comics is fascinated with death and nihilism. He kills millions on his home planet with nuclear bombardment before travelling to earth. He is capable of superhuman strength and can absorb and project vast quantities of cosmic energy, enough to obliterate planets. His most famous storyline sees him gain possession of the Infinity Gauntlet, recently glimpsed in the Thor movie (in Odin’s trophy room). Each gem of that gauntlet grants its bearer complete mastery over one aspect of the universe: Time, Space, Mind, Soul, Reality, or Power. ** END SPOILER **

The Avengers 2 - Sequel Plot, Villain

Update: Aug 2013 – The movie will be called The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, with Ultron as the main villain. He will be voiced by James Spader. Ultron is a robotic artificial intelligence overwhelmed with a god complex and a rage toward his creators, who longs to take over the Earth with his own spawn. Tony Stark is likely to be involved in his creation, and Ultron may be a corrupted version of the Jarvis AI. Whedon says, “He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff.” Whedon also indicates that some of his abilities from the comics will be stripped.

The official plotline is: ‘As the US Government create a force, known as Ultron, The Avengers are told they are not needed any longer. But when Ultron turns against Humanity, it’s time for The Avengers to assemble yet again for their most dangerous challenge ever.’

Thanos will be the mastermind villain in the upcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy movie but will also make appearances in Marvel films after that, so could still play some role in The Avengers sequel.

Confirmed new team members are brother/sister act Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Whedon explains his reasoning, “One of the problems I had on the first one was everybody basically had punchy powers. [Quicksilver]’s got super speed. [Scarlet Witch] can weave spells and a little telekinesis, get inside your head. There’s good stuff they can do that will help keep it fresh.

The release date is May 1st, 2015.

What would you like to see happen in an Avengers sequel? Who should join the team? What do you think of Ultron as the villain? Are you happy with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch as the new additions? Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Well, first of all, I watched and loved The Avengers first sequel. As in the second one, I suggest that I (Spider-man) should be in that film as New York is my neighbourhood, if you know what I mean. Also, I was expecting War Machine to return in The Avengers, aiding the whole team against Loki. Well, War Machine is part of The Avengers, right? There should not be any reason why he was not in the first sequel. Sigh. I really do expect War Machine, a few members of The X-Men (Wolverine, Colossus, Storm or even Nightcrawler) to aid the battle against Thanos. Also, they should add more villains in Avengers 2 like Green Goblin, Sandman and Red Skull, reincarnated by Thanos who should have the power to give life with the gauntlet, right? Just saying. Anyways, The Avengers was awesome and I really can’t wait for The Avengers 2. So, keep it up. Thanks.

    Re- New characters
War-Machine is probably a definite as his character is already out there (Iron Man II) In fact I am surprised we did not see a cameo apperance in the Avengers.

Spidy (Nope Sony hold the rights)However Spider-Woman is a possibilty

None of the X-Men or FF as the will want to keep the franchises seperate

Captain Marvel or Miss Marvel ??? My best guess for these two is possibly the main story for a third film.

Film 2 It’s Thanos possibly a cameo apperance by the Kree or Red Skull.

Well, I think Black Panther, Ant Man, and Dr. Strange should be in there. A very good addition would be if Marvel can get Ghost Rider to join the Avengers, as well as Wolverine.

SPIDER MAN! Especially since they changed him to Andrew Garfield! I don’t care if Sony has the rights or not! They need Spidey, even for 1 movie, then he leaves! But Thanos would be a good antagonist. Plus, do you think they’d have the guts to make a Civil War movie when they get all the heores out?

I think that The Vision should be brought into the equation and they could use Agent Coulson as the template and as the movie goes on more and more of Coulsons memories could surface and you could see him gradually become more human like , get the same actor back to play the part would be a nice touch!

Adding more and more members to the team would be a big mistake! I know everyone has favourites but where will it end? Fantastic four, silver surfer and spiderman? why not namor and the x men? Oh lets not forget the Punisher. Thats before everyone starts suggesting extra villains!! There is only so much screen time and the more characters you add the more diluted and chaotic the film will be (spiderman 3 and batman and robin anyone?) lets all calm down and keep things simple before all this fan pressure and the seduction of big profits from toy sales kill this whole franchise dead in the water!
