Kids Movies 2012 – Guide
26.06.12 # Movie Releases # 17 Comments
Let’s take a look at the biggest and best kids movies of 2012. Family fun this year comes in the form of an unruly Scottish princess, Earth’s fourth Ice Age (movie), a heavily-tattooed Russian Santa, and general cgi-toon saturation.
Here’s our definitive guide to the best kids movies, 2012:
10th – Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, Michael Caine
Director: Brad Peyton
Released: 10th February 2012 (U.S. Release Dates)

Sequel to 2008′s ‘Journey To The Center Of The Earth’ and, like the first film, is based on a Jules Verne novel, this time ‘The Mysterious Island’. A stepfather (Johnson) is forced to accompany his stepson (Hutcherson) on the trip to find his missing grandfather (Caine) on a mythical and monstrous island. Consensus: Good-natured enough, but a sloppy and unfocussed narrative. Too intense for young audiences and borders on cartoonishly dull for adults. [Critics (via Rotten Tomatoes): 42%] [Public (via IMDB): 5.8/10]
9th – Mirror Mirror
Starring: Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Nathan Lane
Director: Tarsem Singh
Released: 30th March 2012

In this reimagined version of the fairytale, an evil queen (Roberts), actually more ‘insecure’ in this version, steals control of the kingdom from its orphaned heir Snow White (Collins). When Snow wins the heart of the charming prince (Hammer) that the queen desires, she is exiled to a dangerous forest. There she enlists the help of seven dwarf bandits to win back her birthright. Consensus: Critics are split down the middle, the public don’t like it much (mediocre, with humour that’s too over-the-top). [Critics: 50%] [Public: 5.6/10]
8th – Big Miracle
Starring: Drew Barrymore, John Krasinski, Tim Blake Nelson, Ted Danson
Director: Ken Kwapis
Released: 3rd February 2012

Family drama based on the 1988 international effort to rescue gray whales stranded near Point Barrow, Alaska. A small-town reporter (Krasinski) discovers a family of whales trapped by rapidly forming ice and starts a campaign to draw international attention to their plight. He recruits his ex-girlfriend – a Greenpeace volunteer (Barrymore) – to help organise a massive collaborative rescue, made up of factions normally hostile to each other. Consensus: Critics say it’s a poignant and feel-good animal movie that satisfies. Public not so keen. [Critics: 74%] [Public: 6.1/10]
7th – Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax
Starring: (voices) Danny DeVito, Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Ed Helms, Rob Riggle
Director: Chris Renaud, Kyle Balda
Released: 2nd March 2012

An idealistic 12-year-old boy who lives in a completely artificial city seeks to impress the girl of his dreams by escaping and finding the seed of a real tree. To discover it he must learn about the dumpy orange creature named the Lorax, a grumpy yet charming thing who protects his natural world. From the creators of Despicable Me. Consensus: Cute and funny enough but the spirit of the book gets lost in the zany Hollywood production values. The material they’ve added is routine kid-pic and has a synthetic feel that’s opposite to Dr.Seuss’ original message. [Critics: 56%] [Public: 6.5/10]
6th – Chimpanzee
Starring: Apes
Directors: Alastair Fothergill, Mark Linfield
Released: 20th April 2012

Disney nature documentary film, four years in the making, about a young chimpanzee who is orphaned and finds himself alone in the African forests, until he is adopted by a tough alpha male, who takes him in and raises him like his own. Consensus: It often goes too far in ‘humanising’ the animals, Tim Allen’s dumbed-down narration doesn’t fit, and it glosses over a lot of important material because it’s for kids, but nonetheless it has great visuals, captures effective intimate moments and is involving. [Critics: 74%] [Public: 6.7/10]

I’m not sure what I make of the whole Children’s film business.
In France they seem to introduce their children to quality cinema younger and teach them how to appreciate it. Instead it seems that we get occassional good films (Nemo, Beauty and Beast etc)and then get it again in 3D. 3D does not make a good story better. 3D makes a re-release profitable.
i like brave the best:)!
i agree
i think the three best kids movies 2012 will be Brave (seen it realy good) Frankenweenie & Wreckit ralph
My daughter is excited about Dr. Seuss The Lorax simply because Zac Efron lends his voice to one of the characters. I told her if she knows who Zac Efron is she is too old to see the movie. Needless to say that did not go down well.
Dont know. I saw The Lorax myself and would watch it again with my son anytime.
As an adult I thought it was a good story and nice animation. Its not much about children, more about the environment.

A lot of these movies I wanted to see but couldn’t. Some of them I saw and I thought they were really good. They’re so good even adults can watch them (even without kids). They’re really enjoyable.
