Kids Movies 2012 – Guide

- AUGUST -

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
Starring: Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, Rachael Harris, Devon Bostick
Director: David Bowers
Out: 3rd August 2012

School is out, but Greg’s summer plans have fallen through. Just what is he going to do with himself? This third movie in as many years is based on the third and fourth books. This is reportedly because it’s the final one, the cast getting too old for the roles. The previous movies received middling reviews, and with the director of the second one staying on for this, expect more of the same.

The Odd Life Of Timothy Green
Starring: Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgerton, CJ Adams, Ron Livingston
Director: Peter Hedges
Out: 15th August 2012

Disney fantasy-drama about a childless couple who bury a box in their backyard containing all of their wishes for an infant. Soon a 10 year old child, Timothy, miraculously appears on their doorstep, matching that description perfectly. But is he all he seems? The way the story is presented in the trailer it looks inadvertently creepy (an infertile couple, a grave in the garden, a boy who has ivy that can’t be cut from his legs). Add to that two lead actors who struggle to be loved by audiences, and a syrupy tone, and I’m not excited for this.

ParaNorman
Starring: (voices) Kodi Smit-McPhee, Anna Kendrick, Casey Affleck
Directors: Sam Fell, Chris Butler
Out: 17th August 2012

An endearing, family-friendly tribute to the horror genre. This is a 3D stop-motion animation about a misunderstood boy (Smit-McPhee from ‘Let Me In’) who can speak with the dead. To save his town from its centuries-old curse he’s forced to take on a zombie siege, ghosts, witches and moronic grown-ups. Affleck and Mintz-Plasse voice a jock and school bully, Kendrick is the big sister. This is from the studio behind the well-received ‘Coraline’ and has a very similar look.

- SEPTEMBER -

Finding Nemo in 3D
Starring: (voices) Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres, Alexander Gould
Director: Andrew Stanton
Out: 14th September 2012

An overly protective clownfish Marlin (Brooks) searches for his abducted son Nemo (Gould), accompanied by a regal tang called Dory (DeGeneres). Along the way, Marlin learns to take risks and to let Nemo take care of himself. One of the best family films ever made, and the best selling dvd in history. It’s finally released on Blu-ray for the first time a few weeks later.

Hotel Transylvania 3D
Starring: (voices) Adam Sandler, Andy Samburg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James
Director: Genndy Tartakovsky
Out: 21st September 2012

Dracula (Sandler), who operates a high-end resort away from the human world, goes into overprotective mode when a boy (Samburg) discovers the resort and falls for the count’s teen-aged daughter (Gomez). Also staying at the hotel are Frankenstein (James), the Werewolf (Steve Buscemi), the Mummy (Cee Lo Green), Quasimodo (Jon Lovitz), and the Invisible Man (David Spade). The director worked on Cartoon Network’s ‘Samurai Jack’, ‘Dexter’s Laboratory’, and ‘Sym-Bionic Titan’. Most movies from Adam Sandler’s production company are money-grabs aimed at the lowest common denominator so don’t expect this to be very good. Would love the concept in someone else’s hands.

I’m not sure what I make of the whole Children’s film business.

In France they seem to introduce their children to quality cinema younger and teach them how to appreciate it. Instead it seems that we get occassional good films (Nemo, Beauty and Beast etc)and then get it again in 3D. 3D does not make a good story better. 3D makes a re-release profitable.

My daughter is excited about Dr. Seuss The Lorax simply because Zac Efron lends his voice to one of the characters. I told her if she knows who Zac Efron is she is too old to see the movie. Needless to say that did not go down well.

Dont know. I saw The Lorax myself and would watch it again with my son anytime. :) As an adult I thought it was a good story and nice animation. Its not much about children, more about the environment. :)

A lot of these movies I wanted to see but couldn’t. Some of them I saw and I thought they were really good. They’re so good even adults can watch them (even without kids). They’re really enjoyable.
