Akira Storyboards Give Glimpse Of Stalled Live-Action Remake23.03.12 # Remake # One Comment
The likelihood of a live-action version of anime classic Akira dramatically receded in January of this year, when news broke that Warner Bros. had shut down production in order to address a budget which the studio felt was too high. Whether the project is revived, in the manner of Disney’s Lone Ranger, remains to be seen, although even if it isn’t, a brace of leaked storyboards give a clue to how it might have turned out.
In truth, there’s not a great deal in the stoyboards which isn’t either obviously derived from the source designs by artist/director Katsuhiro Otomo.
Having said that, curious eyes will inevitably drift towards the depictions of central protagonist Kaneda, rendered as he is with the flaxen locks of Garrett Hedlund; the Tron: Legacy star was the sole confirmed member of the Akira cast when Warners pulled the plug.
Kristen Stewart, Helena Bonham Carter and Ken Watanabe had all also been tipped to star for first-time feature director Ruairi Robinson, while the leaked boards are the work of artist Sylvain Despretz, who has prior experience of toiling on a high-profile Warners production, only for that production to be subsequently canned. He previously contributed to Superman Lives, the Man of Steel movie that Tim Burton was due to direct and in which Nic Cage was slated to star.
