Charlie Kaufman Adapting ‘Knife Of Never Letting Go’ (Next ‘Hunger Games’-Type Teen Smash)30.04.12 # News # No Comment
The Twilight Saga is almost over and The Hunger Games have started, but the trend for Young Adult novel series making it to the big screen has only just begun. Next up is the Chaos Walking Trilogy from author Patrick Ness, the first book of which is entitled The Knife of Never Letting Go. Lionsgate have recruited Charlie Kauffman to adapt the novel for the screen.
Kauffman is perhaps best known for writing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which played with narrative, reality and memory in interesting and entertaining ways whilst never losing sight of the emotional journeys of the characters. Will he be able to work the same magic on this adaptation?
[The Knife of Never Letting Go ] is set in a dystopian future with humans colonizing a distant earth-like planet. When an infection called the Noise suddenly makes all thought audible, privacy vanishes, chaos ensues, and a corrupt autocrat threatens to take control of the human settlements and wage war with the indigenous alien race. Only young Todd Hewitt holds the key to stopping planet wide-destruction.
Kauffman is a surprising choice for this kind of material, but whoever was to adapt a book with that premise had a difficult job ahead of them, presumably Kauffman was chosen because he has already proven himself to be able to present peculiar concepts palatably on screen. It’ll be interesting to the creative solutions he comes up with and what director is picked to bring the script to life.
Until such time as an official trailer is available, we’ll have to make do with this fan trailer produced by a large creative team -
