Top 20 Best Movies Of 2012 …So Far
13.07.12 # Top Ten # 18 Comments9th. Headhunters
Starring: Aksel Hennie, Synnøve Macody Lund, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
Director: Morten Tyldum
Released: 27th April 2012

Norwegian thriller about an accomplished headhunter risking everything to steal a valuable painting belonging to a fearsome ex-mercenary. Site reviewer Paul Martin says – “Slick movie about slick operators. Director Tyldum keeping things ticking over at the kind of fleet-footed pace which won prior Euro-thrillers ‘Tell No One’ and ‘Anything For Her’ so many fans.” The Hollywood remake is in the works.
8th. Indie Game: The Movie
Directors: James Swirsky, Lisanne Pajot
Released: 20th January 2012

Stylishly-filmed documentary about two pairs of totally independent game developers sacrificing money, life and sanity to meet the release deadlines for their projects – ‘Super Meat Boy’ and ‘Fez’ for X-Box Arcade/Steam. It’s not just a job, this is about realising lifelong dreams of sharing their creative visions with the world. A successful game could turn them into millionaires, a duff one will get them forums full of soul-crushing abuse. The doc also talks to some key indie developers from the recent past and gives a potted history of the landscape. Anyone with a slight interest in games will find it a compulsive watch.
7th. 21 Jump Street
Starring: Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Brie Larson, Dave Franco
Directors: Phil Lord, Chris Miller
Released: 16th March 2012

A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring. Site Reviewer Mahmoud El-Azzah says – “Could have easily been a cookie-cutter comedy but doesn’t follow the obvious paths. The gags flow fast and cliches are gloriously challenged and defied. Sappy-chick-flick regular Channing Tatum is surprisingly excellent at comedy and has a genuine bromantic chemistry with Hill.”
6th. Brave
Starring: (voices) Kelly Macdonald, Julie Walters, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson
Directors: Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman
Released: 22nd June 2012

A feisty Scottish princess defies a custom and brings chaos to her kingdom. Soon she must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo the curse. Site Reviewer Dalmatian Jaws says – “While not the best story Pixar has to offer, Brave is visually stunning, representing some of their finest animation to date. The corny first act gives way to a darker, cleverer second act twist that (luckily) remained unspoiled by Disney’s marketing department.”
5th. Cabin In The Woods
Starring: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz
Director: Drew Goddard
Released: 13th April 2012

Five college students take a vacation at a remote cabin, but when they unwittingly unleash horrifying dangers they soon start to suspect there is some form of puppet-master pulling the strings. Postmodern horror co-written and produced by Joss Whedon. Site Reviewer Sam Gurney says – “Immensively clever and fun, this feels like you’ve been sucked behind the scenes of a truly warped creative process. It repeatedly sets up cliches then smashes them with great curveballs. The story is laced with genuinely laugh out loud moments even as the heroes look into the face of true terror. Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford are excellent.”
4th. Moonrise Kingdom
Starring: Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand
Director: Wes Anderson
Released: 25th May 2012

A pair of young lovers flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out and find them. Site Reviewer Dalmatian Jaws says – “Wes Anderson borrows the best parts of his previous work to weave a tale of young love and innocence that’s easily the most emotional of all his films. Shot on Super 16 film, it has a magical sense of nostalgia and boasts great performances from Murray, Norton, McDormand, and Willis, not to mention the two child stars that steal the show.”

The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man.. *thumbs up
???
I’m not sure his year in movies has been so bad we need to fill spaces with junkers like John Carter and Chronicle, do we?
I thought they were decent for the reasons mentioned in the post, but not fantastic. Question is, what would you put in their place?
I think your order is wrong for starters. MIB3 plus John Carter are inferior to the all the movies in the 20-12 spots. Plus no love for Get the Gringo? We Bought a Zoo was a good family flick. Piranhaconda? (That last one was a joke.)
The worst movie of the year. Dark Tide with Halle Berry.
It’s going by U.S. release date so We Bought a Zoo was last year. Get the Gringo is an interesting shout, slipped through the net by going straight to video-on-demand in the U.S., I’ll need to check it out.
All and all its been disappointing so far. The Hobbit and Dark Knight Rises better be worth it. If not I’ll have to wait for the Fantastic Four reboot. Wait? What?
Better than those two? I can randomly pick OK movies that were better than them: Underworld: Awakening, Mirror Mirror, Contraband, This Means War, The Vow, Haywire, American Reunion.
Movies that should be on this list, though: Friends With Kids, Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World, Take This Waltz (?), Your Sister’s Sister, Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, The Five Year Engagement.
Just because a movie is unique doesn’t mean it’s good or needs any kind of recognition. Chronicle was bad because of how much they lost site of “found footage.” Helicopter or cop dashboard cams aren’t “found footage.” In that case they should have dropped it altogether and focused on a decent story.
And how much money you throw at a movie doesn’t mean anything either. A movie like Avatar should be recognized for how it looked and how much it cost because it was a good movie. Superman Returns and those God-forsaken Transformers movies cost a lot, but I’m not going to acknowledge them except to blame Superman for destroying Brandon Routh’s career.
It’s been a bit ho hum.
I like Ted, mainly because of the flash Gordon stuff and the thunder buddies song.
The Raid is pretty good,
Safe House was a sold thriller.
Despite the criticism, I really liked Prometheus.
The Grey was a lot better than I expected.
Not really watched any of the superhero films and didn’t really like Cabin in the Woods. Please someone make a horror film without the dreaded inverted commas of “irony”.
Man on a Ledge, did feature a man and he was on a ledge, so it won my vote for cinematic tautology if nothing else.
John Carter, I liked the Moon maiden or what ever she was, but the film was all of the place and the CGI was like watching a cartoon. Where the budget went, I have no idea.
I Watched The Avengers in 3D
I Watched The Amazing Spider-man in 3D
If I could I would Watch The Dark Knight Rises in 3D.
Also I can’t wait for IRON MAN 3, THOR: The dark world, The Amazing Spider-man 2 and 3 and mostly just because of the source
matireal CAPTAIN AMERICA 2: WINTER SOLDIER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn’t belive Thor was fighting the Hulk! That part in the movie had my nerd side UNLEASHING!!!!!!!!!!!
The Woman In Black…good, solid movie. A nice first step away from HP for Daniel.
21 Jump Street had me rolling in the theater. I didn’t think I’d be wild about it but it was funny as hell. Even when they played into cliches, they played into them well.
u missed battle ship
any adam sandler movie rocks. deal with it! i <3 every-one.
THX FOR 2ND MOVIE THE RAID REDEMPTION ( INDONESIA ) SO FAR IN MY COUNTRY NOT BEST BOX OFFICE MOVIE BUT THIS MOVIE VERY GREAT , 1ST ACTION MOVIE WITH MARTIAL ART BEFORE “MERANTAU 2010″ SAME DIRECTOR
And Where Is Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2
