Paul Thomas Anderson has a new film called The Master.
That is all the introduction you should need:
In a similar move to his previous film, There Will Be Blood, this trailer boasts fantastic dialog-as-narration, a fierce male lead, and a “home made” vibe that lacks any production company logos.
Also like There Will Be Blood, it looks absolutely stunning. Set in the 1950s and (rumored to be) loosely based on the life of L. Ron Hubbard, The Master was shot on 65mm film stock, a rarity in the dying days of film when the Red and Alexa digital cameras roam the earth.
The Master stars Philip Seymour Hoffman (absent from this trailer) and Joaquin Phoenix, who seems to be living up to his last name after some confusing behavior, a public announcement that he was retiring from acting, and the half prank/half box office dud I’m Still Here seemed to kill his film career.
It’s set for a October 12 release in the US. UK release currently unconfirmed.

It literally boggles my mind that anyone can think Scientology is anything other than a scheme by a sci-fi author. At least other religions have the benefit of being founded so far in the past they can be wrapped up in convincing myth. Scientologists are basically a group of people who swear the sky is green and will intimidate you if you point out they’re being ridiculous.
Seems a bit daft to make this movie and then try and get the ok from Scientologists. Why bother making it in the first place if you’re going to spend all your time backpeddling.
Interesting that he couldn’t raise any money from Hollywood and so had to get $42 million from producer Megan Ellison, daughter of a Silicon Valley billionaire.
Trailer is mesmerising.
If you can find the movie ‘The Profit’ watch it and then read up on the outrage and trouble that tiny indie film had. Its a little dated but I think it still hasn’t been given a theatrical release thanks to Scientologists. half the crew quit during the making because they feared they would never work in the industry again. There’s few bootleg copies floating round online but that’s it.

I wouldn’t call it back peddling. He obviously knows Cruise since he directed him to an Oscar nom in Magnolia. It’s probably for the sake of their friendship.
Still, being in Hollywood I can say that Scientology wields a lot of power. I don’t want to say why in a public forum, but I’m sure you can figure it out.
Looks amazing. I agree with most of what you said Sheridan except for other religions being wrapped in convincing myths. I’m a Christian so I wouldn’t agree with that. There is historical evidence that Jesus lived but it ultimately comes down to whether or not you believe He is who He said He is. Now, with Scientology there really isn’t any evidence to support their beliefs.
It’s good to see Phoenix back in a movie.
You’re right, there is strong historical evidence of Jesus having existed. Whether or not he was divine and the miracles really happened is where people disagree, was that myth or not no one can say for sure.
