Chart: Top Comic Book Franchises
18.07.12 # Chart # One Comment
With the passing of Comic-Con last weekend and The Dark Knight Rises opening this Friday, it’s as fine a time as any to grab a calculator and figure out which is actually the biggest comic book-based movie franchise of all time. A calculator? Yup, in a bid to try and level the playing field, we have taken each franchise’s cumulative gross and divided it by the number of instalments. So what came out on top? You may be surprised.
10. Ghost Rider ($83m)
9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ($85m)
8. Superman ($103m)
7. Hulk ($133m)
6. Fantastic Four ($142m)
5. X-Men ($186m)
4. Men in Black ($204m)
3. Batman ($240m)
2. Iron Man ($315m)
1. Spider-Man (Average US gross: $319m)
Note: This doesn’t take account of inflation, which is relevant to the older instalments, but since the vast majority of these movies came out in the last 10 or so years, in most cases it doesn’t matter.
