Horror Movies 2013 – Guide

Dark Skies
Starring: Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo, J.K. Simmons
Director: Scott Stewart
Released: 22 February 2013

2013 horror movies
A couple try to save their family from an apparent alien presence who preys on their children in their home. The writer-director of the underwhelming ‘Legion’ is at the helm. It looks serviceable, but depressingly by the numbers – Unfortunately the number of stereotypical modern horrors has spiralled completely out of control this year. Like ‘Dark Skies’, 7 of the movies on wide release are about a white suburban family in a large property with a fragile kid who is seeing things. I miss the days when on screen horrors had killers with a personality and weren’t all about ‘haunted’ families. But let’s continue… [Critics: 41%] [Public: 6.3] – Decent

– MARCH –

The Last Exorcism Part II
Starring: Ashley Bell, Andrew Sensenig and Spencer Treat
Director: Ed Gass-Donnelly
Released: 1 March 2013

top horror movies 2013
Continuing where the first film left off, teenage Nell is found in the woods having escaped the cult that forced her to deliver a demon baby. Since her family are dead, she moves into a girls’ halfway house in New Orleans and tries to put her life back together with the help of a therapist. But she is being sought by the demon who possessed her before, and it has a different plan this time. Producers have said they want to move away from PG-13 psychological chills to make this R-rated and show “the real horror”. It’s not known yet if this is also found footage. The new director has mediocre credits and no horror experience. …Seems it wasn’t the last exorcism then. [Critics: 16%] [Public: 4.0] – Avoid

The ABC’s Of Death
Starring: Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Iván González, Kyra Zagorsky
Directors: Jason Eisener, Jake West, Noboru Iguchi & more
Released: 8 March 2013

new horror movies 2013
Anthology of 26 horror shorts, one for each letter of the alphabet, exploring death in all its vicious wonder and brutal beauty. The biggest names among the 26 directors are Ti West (‘House Of The Devil’), Ben Wheatley (‘Kill List’), Adam Wingard (‘You’re Next’), Xavier Gens (‘The Divide’) and Nacho Vigalondo (‘Timecrimes’). Segments are around 6 minutes each and were filmed in 15 different countries. Anthologies don’t tend to produce quality horror movies, but this is a bold experiment so could make for an interesting watch. Expect a high level of shock as the directors compete to stand out. [Critics: 35%] [Public: 4.7] – Avoid

– APRIL –

Evil Dead
Starring: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas
Director: Fede Alvarez
Released: 5 April 2013

best horror movies 2013
A group of twenty-somethings hole themselves up in a remote cabin to help a friend go cold turkey. Discovering a “Book Of The Dead” they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods which possess them in succession until only one is left to fight for survival… Remake of the 1981 original. With subsequent films The Evil Dead series became closely associated with Sam Raimi’s distinctive camerawork, humour and the unique performance of Bruce Campbell. This has none of those things but works well as a slick, straight-forward horror. It is very grim though, so only approach if you have the stomach for it. P.S. Jane Levy has one of the best scream-faces in the business. [Critics: 61%] [Public: 6.5] – Good

Lords Of Salem
Director: Rob Zombie
Starring: Sheri Moon Zombie, Bruce Davison, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Ken Foree
Released: 19 April 2013

scariest movies 2013
A radio DJ (Moon Zombie) in Salem, Massachusetts unwittingly plays a sinister record which awakens a coven of nasty 17th century witches. Soon residents are having to contend with their blood lust. This is director Rob Zombie’s sort-of take on the Salem witch trials and a return to 70’s satanic shockers like ‘Satan’s Blood’ and ‘Black Candles’. The teaser trailer had some nice operatic satanic imagery but any preview without talking, 9 times out of 10, is hiding substandard dialogue. Looks like a cult movie in the making, and an acquired taste. [Critics: 44%] [Public: 5.1] – Mediocre

– MAY –

Black Rock
Starring: Kate Bosworth, Katie Aselton, Lake Bell, Will Bouvier
Director: Katie Aselton
Released: 17 May 2013

best horror movies 2013
Three childhood friends set aside their personal issues and reunite for a girls’ weekend on a remote island off the coast of Maine. When an unexpected encounter with a group of male hunters on the island leads to accidental death, they find themselves being stalked by the men, before turning the tables and becoming the stalkers themselves. The director has only one, poorly reviewed, previous and it’s an unusual project for the writer of indie comedies ‘Jeff Who Lives at Home’ and ‘Cyrus’. The trailer didn’t make any of the characters seem very likeable and that will probably be its downfall. [Critics: 49%] [Public: 4.7] – Avoid

Martyrs is a must see for horror fans. Deep Red, Suspiria, Inferno are all Argento masterpieces and the music of Simonetti unequalled in horror aside from Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells. Perhaps one day another geat horror film will be made.

The Conjuring was scary at many moments.

MAMA is far from scary, but the story’s a sad one.

WTF why is Hansel and Gretel added in a Horror movie list? Because it’s as scary as watching Scooby Doo. Though it’s an awesome watch. Entertaining.

    Last Exorcism 1 was sh*t. 2 is even sh*ttier.

    PA1 was good. 2 was alright. 3 was bad. 4 was sh*t. 5 will prolly be sh*ttier.

I liked “A Resurrection” a lot, it got bad reviews but deserves better. A good story, nice and quiet pace, some shock moments and the acting was overal very good!

I THINK THE “EVIL DEAD” REMAKE ISNT THE ‘SHOCK-A-LOT’ HORROR FLICK THAT WE’RE EXPECTING. I HAVENT WATCHED THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY BUT I HEARD THEY WERE GORE FESTS. I’M GOING TO SEE ALL OF THEM AND FIND OUT. 🙂

Each crosses three genres, action-fantasy-horror and rom-com-horror. One is about witches, the other about zombies. It’s like saying American Werewolf isn’t a horror because it’s a horror-comedy. I try to be clear in the description what type of movie it is.

Can’t really say that any of the horror releases this year jumped out at me. And I honestly do try to watch as many as possible.

I enjoyed the comedy/horror mash-up in Warm Bodies, but that is coming from someone whose favourite film in a previous listing ended up being Tucker and Dale V Evil.

I had hoped for more (not better, just more) from World War Z, but even with its wide-ranging source material to work from it wasn’t all it could have been. Not necessarily a bad film in and of itself but not Brooks’ World War Z.

    The year isn’t over yet so . . . here’s hoping.

Yeah it’s not been a great year for the genre. What did you think of You’re Next, The Conjuring and Evil Dead?

ooh. And is The Frozen Ground still being considered a horror?

Wasn’t too sure there was a point to the remake of Evil Dead, but as you say, its visuals are cleaner and crisper. Wouldn’t say it was better than Raimi’s (because I’d likely be shot) but it certainly felt different. Wouldn’t ask for the receipt if the BluRay turned up in my Christmas stocking.

You’re Next was an unsurprising film. A few shock moments scattered about but plot twists were widely broadcast. Saying that, I’d still watch it again without complaint.

I honestly cannot recall anything about The Conjuring. It never left a mark. I would need to see it again (now you’ve made me think about) just to make sure I had seen it in the first place. oops!

Ha, well let me know what you think when you do see it (for the second time?)

I wish someone bought me horror blu-rays for Christmas.

Nobody buys you horror blu-rays? Me neither 🙁 In fact, my friends and family don’t like horror at all. I used to give them DVD’s but I get no feedback whatsoever 🙁 So I stopped, and give them flowers instead 😀 So the horror fascination leaves me lonely, but I don’t mind really, because I always watch movies alone. I dont want to hear “this is just make believe”, no, when I watch, my feelings are real and I totally live in the movies’ atmosphere. In real life I’m chicken sh*t scared, but behind the screen I am the hero!

Flowers instead of horror dvds – nice switch! lol

Yeah I’ve given up finding people to watch horror movies with, very rare that a girlfriend would want to. Anyway it’s not like I even notice if anyone else is there when I’m watching this stuff – too involved.

I’m looking forward to see the second half of 2013 horror movies 🙂 So far this year’s movies were bad 🙁 and I so had it with zombies and haunted houses!

7500 looks promising, I love claustrophobic airplane movies!
I also like scifi, so The Last Days On Mars is on my list too. Together with The Green Inferno and The Horns it seems like some diversity finally arrived 🙂

Agreed, there is some interesting diversity coming up. Hopefully quality stuff. At this stage I think a lot of them will end up being pushed to early next year, which is a shame, but not long to wait.
