Horror Movies 2013 – Guide

Dark Skies
Starring: Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo, J.K. Simmons
Director: Scott Stewart
Released: 22 February 2013

2013 horror movies
A couple try to save their family from an apparent alien presence who preys on their children in their home. The writer-director of the underwhelming ‘Legion’ is at the helm. It looks serviceable, but depressingly by the numbers – Unfortunately the number of stereotypical modern horrors has spiralled completely out of control this year. Like ‘Dark Skies’, 7 of the movies on wide release are about a white suburban family in a large property with a fragile kid who is seeing things. I miss the days when on screen horrors had killers with a personality and weren’t all about ‘haunted’ families. But let’s continue… [Critics: 41%] [Public: 6.3] – Decent

– MARCH –

The Last Exorcism Part II
Starring: Ashley Bell, Andrew Sensenig and Spencer Treat
Director: Ed Gass-Donnelly
Released: 1 March 2013

top horror movies 2013
Continuing where the first film left off, teenage Nell is found in the woods having escaped the cult that forced her to deliver a demon baby. Since her family are dead, she moves into a girls’ halfway house in New Orleans and tries to put her life back together with the help of a therapist. But she is being sought by the demon who possessed her before, and it has a different plan this time. Producers have said they want to move away from PG-13 psychological chills to make this R-rated and show “the real horror”. It’s not known yet if this is also found footage. The new director has mediocre credits and no horror experience. …Seems it wasn’t the last exorcism then. [Critics: 16%] [Public: 4.0] – Avoid

The ABC’s Of Death
Starring: Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Iván González, Kyra Zagorsky
Directors: Jason Eisener, Jake West, Noboru Iguchi & more
Released: 8 March 2013

new horror movies 2013
Anthology of 26 horror shorts, one for each letter of the alphabet, exploring death in all its vicious wonder and brutal beauty. The biggest names among the 26 directors are Ti West (‘House Of The Devil’), Ben Wheatley (‘Kill List’), Adam Wingard (‘You’re Next’), Xavier Gens (‘The Divide’) and Nacho Vigalondo (‘Timecrimes’). Segments are around 6 minutes each and were filmed in 15 different countries. Anthologies don’t tend to produce quality horror movies, but this is a bold experiment so could make for an interesting watch. Expect a high level of shock as the directors compete to stand out. [Critics: 35%] [Public: 4.7] – Avoid

– APRIL –

Evil Dead
Starring: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas
Director: Fede Alvarez
Released: 5 April 2013

best horror movies 2013
A group of twenty-somethings hole themselves up in a remote cabin to help a friend go cold turkey. Discovering a “Book Of The Dead” they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods which possess them in succession until only one is left to fight for survival… Remake of the 1981 original. With subsequent films The Evil Dead series became closely associated with Sam Raimi’s distinctive camerawork, humour and the unique performance of Bruce Campbell. This has none of those things but works well as a slick, straight-forward horror. It is very grim though, so only approach if you have the stomach for it. P.S. Jane Levy has one of the best scream-faces in the business. [Critics: 61%] [Public: 6.5] – Good

Lords Of Salem
Director: Rob Zombie
Starring: Sheri Moon Zombie, Bruce Davison, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Ken Foree
Released: 19 April 2013

scariest movies 2013
A radio DJ (Moon Zombie) in Salem, Massachusetts unwittingly plays a sinister record which awakens a coven of nasty 17th century witches. Soon residents are having to contend with their blood lust. This is director Rob Zombie’s sort-of take on the Salem witch trials and a return to 70’s satanic shockers like ‘Satan’s Blood’ and ‘Black Candles’. The teaser trailer had some nice operatic satanic imagery but any preview without talking, 9 times out of 10, is hiding substandard dialogue. Looks like a cult movie in the making, and an acquired taste. [Critics: 44%] [Public: 5.1] – Mediocre

– MAY –

Black Rock
Starring: Kate Bosworth, Katie Aselton, Lake Bell, Will Bouvier
Director: Katie Aselton
Released: 17 May 2013

best horror movies 2013
Three childhood friends set aside their personal issues and reunite for a girls’ weekend on a remote island off the coast of Maine. When an unexpected encounter with a group of male hunters on the island leads to accidental death, they find themselves being stalked by the men, before turning the tables and becoming the stalkers themselves. The director has only one, poorly reviewed, previous and it’s an unusual project for the writer of indie comedies ‘Jeff Who Lives at Home’ and ‘Cyrus’. The trailer didn’t make any of the characters seem very likeable and that will probably be its downfall. [Critics: 49%] [Public: 4.7] – Avoid

Carrie was “Good” followed the story… adding in some special effects it got an 8 from me ….. To tell you the TRUTH World War Z was soooo FAST and all over the place ( compare it to War of the Worlds in a way with how fast it was BUT BUT BUTTTTT IT was Awesome how they did it ) & I watched it trying to get through it 3 times and it just wasnt what I expected at all…..:( The Tall Man is my FAVVVV for 2012 its so worth the watch!!!!!! I enjoyed the Insidious Movies …:) Another 1, sorry not in 2013 but 2011 You’re Next is such a great psychological thriller I hope # 2 comes soon!!!! 😀 and 1 last I can think of is “We Are What We Are” Loved it, It’s different than most Horrors in General….Cannibalism within the Family at its Best!!!!! how is it that with every single american made so-called horror film that has been released in recent history, the dumbest people on the planet generally are the only survivors…….for reals do people actually believe this crap……… cmon how dumb are people getting when they can actually fall for this bs give us realistic scenarios with realistic plot direction and characters that people can actually give two s@#ts about rather than placate the uneducated and imbecilic with the same crappy rehashed storylines and obnoxiously predictable plots…just my opinion………everyone`s entitled to one …unless of course the us film industry says otherwise……..

One really good movie that nobody talks about is You’re Next. Also another good one is Haunter. They are a little low budget but they are also suspense. I love movies that come out of no where and scare the crap outta you.

Okay, how nobody mentions Sinister, unreal. By far best horror movie to date. You can’t miss: Dark Skies, The Fourth Kind, Afflicted, Insidious (2 was good, but sequels always r tough to top the original), The Conjuring(Patrick Wilson is the new face of horror, great actor), Black Rock (good play off Hemingway’s “The Greatest Game”, The Rite, Cabin in the Woods (Chris Hemsworth, Thor, is in it), Devil Inside, Paranormal Activity 1 & 4 best so far, see what 5 brings, The Purge, started religious horror, n the best classic Exorcism of Emit Rose, The Last Exorcism 1 & 2, You’re Next. I have more but those who enjoyedcWorld War Z which I was very much looking forward to.Take Brad Pitt out n u leave us with nothing. Plans for a sequel. Also, older movie Fallen is another movie early on in the religious horror genre, along with The Mothman Prophecies, spooky and a top 10 movies. Just gettingcstarted…

Sinister was out the year before. A number of the films you mention didn’t come out in 2013. Sinister is a great movie though.

I thought The Haunting In Connecticut 2: Ghosts Of Georgia and The Last Exorcism Part II. Don’t avoid them just because someone tells you too. They had really good plots and were really well made. And Insidious 2 was f**king amazing. If you liked the first you will like the second.

Your expectations must be low then. Haunting in Connecticut 2 and The Last Exorcism 2 were absolutely terrible movies. Cliched, predictable, try hard moments, nothing scary – pretty much sums them up. Insidious 2 was atleast entertaining, even though predictable and had a good score. The others just fail short of everything.

Mama was an absolutely horrid movie. Started out ok, but degenerated into an absolute mess. Ending was terrible and didn’t make much sense. Bad CGI at the end as well.

Lords of Salem was amazing, but arthouse. If you’re afraid of full frontal, do not watch this movie.

John Dies At The End was so good, I had to go out and read the books.

Warm Bodies was not a horror flick. Just because it has zombies does not make it horror. A good movie though.

I found Evil Dead to be decent. I was impressed to a point. It isn’t and will never be the original though.
