Iron Man 3 News Round-Up – “No Avengers Cameos” & More5.12.12 # Sequel # 3 Comments
The titanic Marvel multi-franchise universe rolls on next year with the release of Iron Man 3. But will Nick Fury or any of The Avengers cameo in it? What’s the relationship going to be between the multiple villains? And what kind of tone will it have? Answers below.
Directed and co-written by Shane Black and produced by Kevin Feige, the film sees the eponymous Iron Man take on Ben Kingsley’s villainous terrorist leader Mandarin while simultaneously dealing with personal fallout from this year’s The Avengers. Marvel’s own take on the plot reads:
“Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?”
While the trailer suggested a darker and less comic tone than its predecessors, producer Feige has come out to say “It’s not a serious movie, but we seriously dig into exploring more of Tony. …What you’ll see in Iron Man 3 are some very unique directions being taken.”
Director Shane Black adds “We had kind of a conundrum in that The Avengers opens up this huge skyhole full of inter-dimensional aliens, and you kind of look back and [think], ’Well, what do you do after that?’ Except go back to a sort of more gritty, intense kind of techno-thriller root.”
And this tallies with Sam Jackson who said elsewhere “I think my next time as Nick Fury is in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, because I’m not in Iron Man 3. None of the Avengers are in Iron Man 3. It’s a standalone Iron Man movie.”
Meanwhile James Badge Dale, who plays Lieutenant-Colonel Eric Savin, has explained how the multiple villains relate to each other, “Ben Kingsley (The Mandarin) is the mouthpiece. Guy Pearce (Aldrich Killian) is the brain. I’m the muscle.”
It’s logical to assume then that it’s Savin in the Iron Patriot armour causing havoc in the trailer, except the new picture of the armour clearly shows the words ‘Lt Col James Rhodes’ (Don Cheadle) are written on it:
Finally, here’s a new shot of scientist Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall) looking a little the worse for wear, after what is likely some explosion-based tribulations:
Iron Man 3 arrives in the UK next April, May in the US. Don’t worry, Gwyneth Paltrow is back in support as Pepper Potts.
