‘Monsters’ Director Begins Filming ‘Godzilla’

Godzilla Movie 2013 - News & Rumors
Director of low budget apocalypse flick Monsters has begun principal photography on the reboot of Godzilla, as Legendary Pictures revealed on Twitter.

The studio tweeted a link to their YouTube channel, and a video which revealed Edwards having just completed the first shot of the film.

Gareth Edwards made his feature film debut with 2010’s Monsters, which he directed, wrote, shot, and produced the visual effects for. With a budget of just $500,000 it was released to critical acclaim.

The upcoming Godzilla film will be his second feature film, and is intended to be a reboot of the series. It stars Juliet Binoche, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe and Aaron Taylor-Johnson and is being co-produced by Yoshimitsu Banno, director of the 1971 Godzilla movie Godzilla vs. Hedorah.

Simply titled Godzilla, the upcoming film will be the second to be filmed entirely within the American studio system after Rolan Emmerich’s 1998 film. With a screenplay by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption), David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight, Man of Steel) and Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3), the $200 million budget is a remarkable step up from Edwards’ previous work. Is he up to the job? Or is this out of his league? He certainly seems confident enough in the video.

We’ll find out on May 16, 2014.

I keep trying so hard to be excited for this movie. I love the Godzilla movies, and have 22 of them. I have to say, though, Godzilla vs Hedorah is one of the worst ever…
